No..I think Pacquiao is GREAT. He's a GREAT fighter. But it's obvious that sharp counterpunching from a game clever fighter compromises his ability to look great. No shame in that...same is true for 99% of fighters.

No he isn't. Cotto can counterpunch...but to say he's a GOOD counterpuncher suggests that this is one of the talents that he's known for. That's misleading.

Perhaps you don't know what is meant by good counterpunching. It's consistent making the opponent miss and pay and/or firing back immediately and accurately preventing the opponent from getting into a punching rhythm.

 

The Duran fan is the only good thing about him. Other than that, he's just an obnoxious Floyd fan that hangs around like a bad smell.

Cotto has always been a counterpuncher, since he was like a 5 fight novice.

Granted he's not as good as it as Marquez, and he can lead too, and jab and move a bit, but he IS a counterpuncher make no mistake.

 

We'll see this in action against Margarito no doubt then....

 

Cotto started counter punching when he started taking a beating too late. Cotto like Marquez in the first fight came out aggressive, Marquez was on his ass 3 times, and since that point has learn..counterpunch, counter, counter....be aggressive when countering(more than one/two punch) but never lead...

 

You already saw it in Plasterito 1 Sly, and the Mosley fight, and early against Pacquiao, and in almost every one of Cotto's fights.

 

He was countering Pacquiao early, but often just with the jab, playing it safe. In fact he did pretty well early when he was countering.

He wasn't countering late, he was fucking running away.

Cotto has always had somewhat of a counterpuncher mentality, since very early in his career.

 

That's what I always liked about Cotto actually, his smooth, relaxed, counterpunching style.

As most of you know I LOVE aggressive fighters, but for some reason I've always liked Cotto's style.

 

Cotto is too fragile to have ever beaten Pacquiao. Although he has decent defensive skills he's not particularly elusive either....as the slow punching Mummy Margarito found out.

Yeah, I remember that round exactly. I think it was the 7th. It seemed Pacquiao was taking more chances and I remember thinking okay this is the rd Pacquiao takes over and JMM can't keep up because of his age. Pacquiao seemed to fight through Juan's counters and got the better of the exchanges, but then just like you said, the very next rd Pac went back to being more cautious than normal.

 

Exactly! WTF?! I thought the same thing - "ok, this fight has taken a turn. And it's not going to be good for JMM." And lo and behold, Pacquiao returned to his previous form. It was very puzzling.

I'd be lying if I said one or two conspiracy theories didn't go through my head.

I understand Pacquiao may not have had the conditioning to fight like that the entire fight. But I found it hard to believe, and very strange, that he didn't go back at all to fighting with that energy. Or that he didn't fight that way prior to the 7th round, for that matter.

Is it really possible he had just one round of that in him? And that even given the success he had with it, he wouldn't go back to it once? Not even when Roach told him to put JMM on his back?

I'd share with everyone my conspiracy theories, and the fact Pacquiao was chuckling in the corner about something just prior to that round, but I know it'd be a nearly irresponsible amount of speculation and I'd only be ridiculed for it, if not accused of being in denial regarding Pacquiao's less than dominant performance.
