Me, Id rather wait until a fighters career ends, but its understandable people are ready to start.

Sanchez, Zarate, Olivares, Lopez, Chavez, Saldivar...Marquez? Does he belong? Top 15? Top 10? Top 5? Higher, even?

Personally, I felt he definitely won yesterday, and will count it as so toward his ever-growing legacy.

talent wise I think JMM is up there with Sanchez.

I want JMM to go to 140 to become a 4 division champion like Morales. Both of those guys are the best in accomplishments.

to me guys like LOpez and Chavez are a bit overrated. Especially Finito. He just sat on that undefeated record not really testing himself.

What about Lopez's fights with Alvarez? You cant say that second fight wasnt a challenge he didnt rise to exceptionally.

Yeah those fights were good, actually a third fight would have been great.

Both are students of Nacho, but I'd say Marquez has the better resume, proved himself by moving up in weight and winning. Finito has the 0, but he never faced the equivalent of Manny Pacquiao. Like Chavez, Finito achieved greatness by longevity. I'd rank Marquez a Top 10 mexican. Ahead of Morales and Barrera.

marquez being no. 1 is debatable. i'd only place him behind chavez. he's greater than sanchez, canto, finito, and olivares.

I thought he lost the rematch. Alvarez was punished for coming in over weight.

Oh, and if you can only think of one fight that might be an exception, you are proving his point.

    Definitely top 5 guy.

I would have liked to see him in against Morales and MAB when they were at their best.

he should take on Morales at 140.

    I think that's a war.

I thought Lopez won the rematch close-but-clear, and that there was better case for a reverse outcome in the first fight (I had Lopez winning both, by slim margins).

Sure it's easy to get on Lopez for not moving up to 108 a lot earlier in his career, and never to 112. But his L/O/C at 105 is a bit underrated. Not the stuff of legendary resumes, but not the bum of the month club people make it out to be.

As for this topic... I don't disagree that only chavez rates ahead of him historically

  13. ILLUMINATI

    ILLUMINATI Roberto Duran

Talent wise Marquez is probably the best if not #2 behind Sanchez.

    All time...#1 Chavez no doubt.....

Marquez is fucking WELL BEHIND Chavez, Sanchez, Olivares... way behind those guys

I'm not 100% certain he's the best out of Morales/MAB/Himself, never mind better than the above

I'd rank him over Lopez, since he's actually fought more than 3 good fighters in his career

yeah, he's top 10 among the Mexicans

but he's not Chavez/Sanchez/Olivares in a million years ... it's those three and then a big, big space and then you can start counting again

I can see an argument for Sanchez, but I disagree on Olivares, who lost almost as much as he won on the top level while in his prime.

Marquez has been far more dominant, over three weight classes, for a far greater time. In fact, the fight with Floyd (moving up two divisions against an ATG who didn't even bother to make weight) is arguably the only time he's outright lost from prime to twilight.

He's arguably 2nd behind Chavez in terms of greatness.

In terms of QUALITY..... Sanchez and Lopez were better fighters than JMM.

  23. cdogg187

    cdogg187 GLADYS

Olivares partied his way to most of his losses... but at his best, he was an incredibly dominant fighter, far moreso than Marquez ever has been

  24. Jake

I agree... but that's still part of his legacy, in fact a huge part.

I just can't agree with the formula you provide in this case. Way too subjective, and the reason why Duran fans insist their guy is GOAT.

Listen Jake, Jesus could walk on water. But the Montreal Duran could swim on land.

His only superior was the 168 Jones, who created the Universe on the same day he played a b-ball game.

Or in Cdogg's case, the 135 Whitaker. Who could part the sea, move the clouds, and shake the mountains all while doing a few lines.

Jake, he was 68-1-1 (62 KOs) up until he showed up dead at the weight and lost the Bantamweight crown to Rafael Hererra... the one loss was due to an intentional headbutt by Chucho Castillo early in the second fight that caused it to be stopped in the 14th even on the cards... He brilliantly battered Castillo for 15 rounds to regain it in the rubbermatch ... His level of comp was outstanding and he was absolutely dominant... After that, he moved up to featherweight where the results were as mixed as his dedication, but he still scored some high quality wins up there as well... regardless, like Duran, he was a completely dominant champion for the first half of his career... at his best, he was pretty clearly a more formidable and less vulnerable fighter than Marquez...

you tell me... what Lightweight was more dominant than Whitaker? Duran is about the only guy that a case could be made for... you can accuse me of whatever hyperbole you'd like, but the facts support my view of Whitaker as definitely no worse than the second best Lightweight that ever breathed... go watch the fights if you think it is so ridiculous... watch all of them, all 31 of his fights there and count up the rounds he lost... you come up with 10, I'll eat my hat

Olivares has a case (which I support) as the greatest Mex ever, as any studious observer to his career will attest.

Whitaker is arguably the best LW who ever lived, too.

Honestly, I laugh when people criticize me for thinking that about Whitaker.

You would think I was saying "Jim Watt is the greatest Lightweight of all time"
