Of course when people mention the best master class performances, the usual suspects are always mentioned: Jones-Toney, Chavez-Rosario, Mayweather-Corrales, Hopkins-Tito, Sanchez-Gomez, ect. But what are some virtuoso performances that sometimes go under the radar. Some that come to mind: Pedroza-Ford: Pedroza at his true best. It was a work of art the way his systematically destroyed him. Ford gave Sanchez all he could handle, but he couldnt do shit with Pedroza. Antonio Esparagoza vs Stevie Cruz: Similar to Chavez-Rosario, this fight was one artistically pleasing brutal beat down. Cruz got thrashed, and Esparagoza took him apart like a surgeon. Roger Mayweather-Vinny Paz: Yes, I said it. The way Roger completely outboxed, and beat the shit outta Paz was fun to watch. Roger had real skills. Too bad he had the chin of a 13 yr old. Jimmy Paul-Harry Arroyo: Coming into this fight Paul was the underdog, and Arroyo was thought to be one of the best lightweights in the world. Paul masterfully outboxed him, and thrashed him. Pitching a 15-0 shut out. Others?
I dont think thats underrated. At least not on boxing forums. Theres been SO many threads just like this over the years, and everytime Taylor-McGirt is one of the first fights that recieves mention.
Well, I have rarely seen it spoken of. Maybe I havent paid near enough attention. Young-Shavers II. Shavers no great foe, but people badly under-estimate how close Young's bout with the more dangerous Foreman was. He dismantled Shavers.
Its fine. Taylor-McGirt is one of my FAVORITE virtuoso performances to watch. Another one of my favorite virtuoso performances: Nunn-Tate.
Spinks-Qawi IS a good one. What about Patterson-Bonavena? Considering how aged Patterson was, that aint half bad what he did.
Thats not a bad one. Rodrigo Valdez's KO of Bennie Briscoe also deserves mention. That was a masterful ass whuppin.
Great examples... Man, Jimmy Paul beat the dogshit out of Harry Arroyo, who was a pretty damn good fighter
you're lucky Hegman isn't here to shout at you with 500 excuses for Mando, LOL Laguna did do a paint job on him, for sure, though
With his tendency to get hurt and them being 15 pounds heavier on fight night, probably not very well... But I'd rank him a better fighter than either guy... maybe if they have to actually weigh 135, he can beat 'em
I tend to believe with Rios being the much stronger, better chinned man he'd KO Arroyo. Even if Harry had a 24 yr weigh in.
Mosley vs. Margarito?? Marquez vs. Katsidis? not flawless, because of the knockdown...but other than that moment Marquez tattooed him.
It's hard to think of the awkward, marauding Juan Roldan as doing anything in "virtuoso" fashion, but did you ever see his fight with Frank Fletcher? Roldan was a gigantic middleweight and he shoved Fletcher around like he was a junior welterweight... he finished it with a one punch KO, a beauty of a right hand Sean O'Grady put a merciless bodypunching clinic on Hilmer Kenty, just annihlated him to the body... All I can say is that Kenty had a huge heart to go through that and last the distance, plenty of guys would have quit It's not a huge ass-kicking but if you want to see a beautiful display of jabbing your way to one-sided victory, Loreto Garza's elegant paintjob on the stupid meatball Pazienza is a great one to watch It was a competetive fight for the first few rounds, but past the midway point, Carlos Palomino subjected John Stracey to a monstrous pounding, another bodypunching clinic
I think it's impossible to say, because Rios has never actually had to fight as a lightweight... it'd be more accurate to match Rios with a Jr. Welter or even a Welter
