What fights that really had no meaning or were between used-to-be or never-were fighters, and which really should not have been made, had a good entertainment factor they retain to this day? Example: Kevin McBride vs Mike Tyson. Total travesty, McBride was rubbish, Mike was totally shot, yet McBride stands in there, shows more quality in 6 rounds than he ever showed {either before or after}, with Mike Hail-Marying, landing some good stuff, trying to break McBrides arm and then trying to headbutt him out of the fight as the crowd goes bonkers. Morales vs Maidana might be another good one. Morales, a reformed alcoholic and used-to-be great fighter, fights Maidana, a rated 140lb slugger. Morales gets his face kicked in for all of round one, and winds up with a horribly closed eye. He fights 10-10 for the rest of the bout, but he comes back to stagger Maidana and expose him {or his preparation} badly in the mid-rounds, despite Morales taking a hiding to the liver throughout. Morales only wins a few of the rounds and does take a beating to the body in a fight which didn't change anything and probably still shouldn't have been made, but it was quite fun, commentary aside. Sugar Ray Leonard vs Donny Lalonde. Superficially a proper fight, but Ray Leonard uses his contractual power to sweat Lalonde, effectively a one-armed fighter, down to a barely-manageable 169lbs or so before beating him late on. Lalonde still manages to floor Leonard before Leonard comes back to KO a drained and defenceless Lalonde.
Sugar Ray was a bastard. Not only did Lalonde have Teddy "Medium" Atlas threatening to murder him, but his right arm was junk and he couldn't make the weight at all. The fight is decent fare irregardless. Jones Jr vs Tito Trinidad is another "travesty" fight, between two guys who were going nowhere at all. Tito plodded forward manfully and Roy managed to put on a half-a-show with some of his old flair and razzamatazz. Tito played along, rising from knockdowns to keep up his futile plodding for the distance. Utterly irrelevant as a contest, yet watchable.
Danny Green vs Roy Jones Jr Nothing fight between a by-then shot Roy and a never-was Danny Green. Roy still manages to get KTFO in a fun style, and the commentary makes it all the more hilarious and re-watchable. In fact, the commentary and the travesty that unfolded were so hilarious that it needs to be posted. Pathetic stuff. <object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/G8GiIED4StU?version=3&feature=player_detailpage"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/G8GiIED4StU?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object> Some more classic, eminently re-watchable horseshit from Down-Under. Classic irrelevant boxing Comedy. In this clip, Danny goes from "conquering Australia and the World", to getting beaten up by nowhere man Antonio Tarver whilst doing a bad James Toney impression and then trying to have sex with Tarver after the bell. Then he sits on his stool and bellows "No way, no way" when the ref waves it off. <object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vbZlTo984PY?version=3&feature=player_detailpage"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vbZlTo984PY?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object>
Well Toney went on to challenge for a version of the title, as did Holy, so...no, sorry. :: Toney still had a bit left, and, just for what its worth, some pingz quitina der oom fight quishko anytime u a bitsch man,
I know.....Roy Jones Jr vs Tito was like one of those fights in a special school where the slightly less-special kid {such as the one with the arms} starts to get the upper-hand over the slightly more-special kid {such as the one with no arms} and it degenerates into a talentless, one-sided, entertaining mis-match, with no-arms taking a few trips to the lino before its called-off.
I am not even a Holy fan, and I found it sad and depressing... He'd have chased Toney out of the ring in his younger days
If Toney and Holy fought tomorrow, it would be a bona-fide, dead-cert, enthralling, entertaining bum-fight of the highest order. It would have fuck all relevance and be totally absorbing. Holy might beat him too. I wouldn't pay to watch it, but I'd watch it.
Was it quite the travesty? I was going to mention that earlier, but Danny had a lot of miles left on the clock and went on to fight Vitali, and had some big wins even after that beating, including beating Audley and John McD. Now, Danny vs Chisora seems to have been every inch the farce and travesty, but it wasn't entertaining or enthralling at all.
How true --- although the part where Audley Harrison was a big win ventured away from spin and into lunacy territory ::
