Who were the fighters that were branded as hidden gem by the harcore fans and were deemed too high risk, low reward for the top fighters to face yet, fumbled miserably when their time to shine came ?


Travis Sims is one of them, we kept hearing how good this guy was from the hardcore fans and, and basically as soon as a top network takes notice and starts to showcase him, he failed miserably vs the very ordinary Alcine
(in his home town to makes matter worse ) in a fight in wich he only managed to make mean faces

that was an impressive win. n'dou had a strong fanbase from tape collectors and most thought it was a matter of time before he took over the 130/135 landscape. i think floyd ruined him.

 

wasn't vivian harris the supposed guy to knock mayweather out? i remember a lot of folks hyping him up minutes before he stepped in against cyclops.

 

Jake was really the only diehard Harris fan around here, and Harris to be fair to him had gone to Germany and stopped Oktay Urkal, whom Tszyu had beaten on points, and whom Eamon Magee, who went 12 with Hatton, and who had dropped Hatton, had lost to on points.

Harris was an OK fighter.

Letterlough was this guy who was going to burst everyones arse, then Richard Hall, post-Roy-Jones, beat him in an up-and-downer.

Id argue Ouma at one point had overcome obscurity and was a full blown factor. Was he a disappointment? Yes. But he was not obscure by the time he seemingly under achieved.

 

letterlough was a fun but limited espn fighter. everyone knew that prior to his war vs. j gonzalez.

 

The impression I got was that his showing vs Jirov had everyone thinking he was fringe world-class and that a lot of guys were afraid of him.

 

he was supposed to be a tune up for jirov. that was a one-sided beatdown.

he was fun to watch though. had it not been for ward-augustus, his fight vs. gonzalez would've FOTY.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Winky Wright.

Less obscure, but he was ridiculously overhyped at one point, always going on about everyone avoiding him, people believed him etc.

But let's face it, he's never really "shined" has he or lived up to a lot of hardcore fans expectations.

I guess Wright was a proven elite fighter, but kind of borderline elite imo.

Despite beating Mosley and Trinidad, he just seemed to never live up to the extremely high regard many held him in.

I thought he lost to Nando fair and square.

And neither of those wins impress me much to be honest. Mosley sucks at 154, and Trinidad was the easiest fighter to outbox ever, just fucking plods around trying to load up on a left hook.

yea basically he's like clottey except he actually beat good opponents and will make the boxing hall of fame.

 

He beat 2 welterweights Neil, one who had NO business at 154, and the other who was the single most overrated, scrubby, 1 dimensional fighter of the modern era at elite level. Again, those wins aren't that impressive to me.
