OK we all know the 5'7 lightweight Duran moved to 160 and fought on even terms with Hagler for most of the fight.

How would the overrated, poor man's Duran do against one of Haggles' victims?

Duran hit 200 and beyond in between LIGHTWEIGHT fights. Suffice to say, the man was anything but a natural lightweight.

Chavez even today would have to go on a lifelong binge to hit that high. Was as true of a lighter weight fighter if there ever was one.

And seriously, the Mugabi threads trend has completely run its course

Duran was absolutely a natural lightweight. His prime was at lw, and the vast majority of his career. Him balooning up doesn't mean much.

In the early 70's, he looked like an average sized, 5'7 lightweight, smaller than some of his opponents.

By the late 70's he bulked up a bit, and started to look like a BIG lightweight, but ultimately lightweight is his natural weight.

Not that much bigger than Chavez really.

Hatton also balooned up to near 200, but he was very much a natural 140 pounder.

    Are you denying this, Flomo?

You're not a "natural" at a certain weight if you can't actually fight at that weight class anymore.

I wonder why Neil is such a dick? What terrible past produced this furious machine of pure negativity?

if by "We all" you were referring to yourself and the glaswegian gimp, then no, I guess i cant deny that.

  9. Mugabi by KO.

JCC is out of his element at 154lb. Chavez was a small guy.

Machine is apt. He's consistent and predictable in his unrelenting negativity

    10-5

not a close fight at all

Yes it was close, Hagler won it by a point on 2 of the judges scorecards.

Pretty much everyone agreed it was close apart from you.

  14. Neil

    Neil tueur de grenouilles

who is everyone? it was close if youre a duran dickrider. he got outboxed for 2/3 of the fight.

Nah, he was the one doing the outboxing and frustrating Haggles. Have you even seen the fight?

He was winning the fight until he hurt his hand with a few rounds left.

2 judges had him losing by a point, which is accurate. This isn't like some random judge scoring almost every round to Duran, a la Pacquiao Marquez, the judging was accurate.

Duran certainly was competitive with Hagler.

Chavez, OTOH, would not be competitive with Mugabi.

Mugabi knocks him into next week, early.

Really, this is coming from the guy who thinks Marquez would have KO'd Floyd at 135 based on how their fight at 147 went

  18. Neil

    Neil tueur de grenouilles

    how did you score it?

Anyone who scored it 10-5 and thinks Hagler outboxed Duran didn't watch the fight.

i can understand some geriatric like oddgay hoe suggesting it was a close fight since he watched it live and anticipated hagler kicking the shit out of duran. someone who watched it years later on video cant be afforded that excuse.

I don't recall, it's been a long time since I watched it.. I do know Duran was ahead going into the last third of the fight, Hagler was giving him too much respect. Hagler pulled ahead late, but there's no way he won that fight by 5 rounds.

  22. mexican wedding shirt

Yep, Duran also hurt his hand, which is when Hagler started to pull ahead.

Yep. Chavez hit a brick wall @ 147, let alone fighting a beast (literally in this case) @ 154.

Duran could still move pretty well as a middleweight. Julio was very lead footed and slow at welter.

Actually, you stupid asshole, I've always thought Hagler won clearly and the scorecards were closer than they should have been.

So it looks like you are making yet another stupid comment. I guess that's easier than actually knowing something. To each his own, I guess.

    As you were...a douchebag.

Not true. I saw it when it happened and have watched it many times since (although not in the past few years). And to me, Hagler won clearly and the scores were too close. I think Duran doing better than expected influenced the judges and his fans. It wasn't a blowout and Duran was competitive, but the fight wasn't close enough for a case to be made for a Duran win.

agreed... he could never handle that weight, just not possible for him

I think the closeness of that fight is somewhat exaggerated... Duran fought a good fight and it's a great display of his remarkable skills and defense, but Marvin won it about 9-6 on my card

I only watched the fight in its entirety once and wasn't really paying close attention to round by round scoring. Sure Duran was competitive but from memory Hagler won that fight going away. Seems to me more of a case of people giving the "overmatched" guy every benefit of the doubt and therefore seeing it closer than it was. Kind of like Holyfield-Foreman or Maidana-Morales.

Hagler choked badly in this fight (guess how long Duran lasts with Monzon?).

Mex is also right that Duran injuring himself coincided with Hagler getting a (pretty narrow) leg-up on the cards.

seriously. Chavez was barely a factor at 147. he would not have done shit at 154. and a strong, physical hard-punching 154 pounder would've been the tallest order.
