Post fight interview/ post fight conference w.e was he asked "Did Margarito hit as hard this time around as the first? "

Good question. One of the downsides of having Boxnation is that they don't get the production right all the time- I didn't get to see or hear all of the interviews or questioning after the fight, except for Steve Farooq.

I have a suspicion there was a desire on the behalf of the networks to play-down the cheating once the fight was finished being sold. If they left out hard questions after the fight, that would go some way to confirming that suspicion.

But I can't comment further, as I haven't seen all the interviews.

I am happy now that Margarito did load his gloves the first time.

And yes the question was asked...Cotto gave a typical answer....LOOK at my face tonight compare to that night 2 years ago...he never hurt me...

When you factor in that cuts and bruises re-appear with greater ease once they have already been caused, that takes away from any claim that Margarito wasn't landing enough to recreate the injuries from the first fight.

Cuts are easier to re-open than never-cut-before flesh.

Contusions are easier to bring back up than to cause them in the first place.

Margarito loaded his gloves for that fight. It's clear as day.

I think as usual the "HBO ANGLE" wildly missed the mark. Cotto won the fight the only way I think he could. He had Manny do his dirty work for him. Anyone that thinks Margarito isn't completely shot(and was never that good)is screwy. Cotto landed a bullshit jab and Margarito's face exploded.

That was one of the first questions Max asked. Cotto replied with something like "I'm still awake. Nine, ten rounds and I'm still awake"

They did not downplay the wraps. It was the main focus of the telecast.

Cotto can retire on a high now.

    Stop it.

Margarito looked the same as always. Slow, plodding, but tough and a good workrate.

If Margarito hadn't loaded his gloves the 1st time, Cotto would have won a UD.

I don't believe so. The fight last night went pretty much how I thought. Cotto hit and ran and could do nothing to keep Margarito off of him. He has no vision in his eye from go. You could tell he was getting hit with shots he couldn't see. I think loaded gloves or not the fight in 2008 would have been the same. My hope was Marg was more damaged than Cotto and he was. Thank goodness. Margarito deserves it. I am very happy Cotto won.

The fight was practically a mirror image from the 1st one only Phony's shots had no effect this time around. Without his loaded gloves, Cotto would have just outpointed Margarito with some bumps along the way.

The eye did play a big role, no doubt. But even before the eye shut on him, Cotto was still countering him like he did the 1st time. Without the bad eye, no stoppage IMO...Same thing in the 1st fight. No loaded gloves for Phony = No big effect on Cotto.

Cotto is far from a perfect fighter. But Margarito is not in his league if everything is on the up and up.

Maybe. I am not saying plaster of Paris isn't a factor in the first fight. I picked Tony to beat him exactly the way he did in the first fight and I knew nothing of plaster then.

The eye only had an effect in that Cotto was able to land more. The telling factor was that when Cotto got hit, he didn't get hurt as bad. In the first fight, Cotto was blessing himself coming out for the latter rounds. Just think about that. That's the trouble he was in. He was in real dire straits SO EARLY in that fight, from the wraps.

So, having only one good eye don't fuck up your perception and you're just as good at hitting a moving target ??? That's retarded

Cotto was able to land more? in the first fight, Cotto was landing at will just like this fight. The only difference between this fight and the first one, is that Margarito's shots weren't having as much of an impact.

How do you come to conclusion he had only one good eye? The man passed two test to get his license. TWO. He was also passing the test inside the ring as the doctor was constantly asking him to count how many fingers he saw.

counting fingers in the corner aint exactly the same as seeing left hooks coming from various angles, you simpleton

Well then Margarito's eye must have been fucked up in the first fight too, since Cotto was landing at will then too.

margarito could see better in the first fight. helped him offensively and defensively.

    is this really a debate?

  21. Anthony

    Anthony Admin Staff Member

Yeah it actually is. what helped him offensively in the first fight was the plaster.

Margarito was getting hit more in the first round (where he could see) than in the 5 round where the eye pretty much shut.

Yep. In fact if anyone seemed to be trying to downplay the wraps controversy it was Cotto as he seemed to be avoid answering the question and just flat out would not give a straight answer.

Like many here have stated though, it was obvioius Margarito's punches weren't having the same affect on Cotto. In the first fight Cotto was reacting to every punch to the point you started to wonder if he was related to Kermit Cintron. In the rematch not so much. Had this been a 15 rounder and Margarito had 2 good eyes, he might have actually been able to pull out another stoppage on Cotto.

For such a top tier fighter, Cotto seems to be one of the less physically durable guys out there. Even without wraps you could tell when guys like Mosley and even Clottey were hurting him.

  23. Anthony

    Anthony Admin Staff Member

Wouldnt that make hims durable if those guys hurt him, yet he won? He was hurting Mosley too. Cotto has been in many hard fights and is still around. His only losses are to a disgusting cheat and the best fighter in the world. I think that is pretty durable.

People are going overboard with this Cotto is fragile bullshit. He's not the toughest fighter in the world, but he's not THAT fragile either.

Who looked more fragile against Manny, Cotto or Hatton?

That just isn't true man. His eye was obviously a handicap.

The eye was a handicap in terms of what Cotto could do to Margarito post round 3, i.e. what Margarito could avoid.

The gloves were a handicap in terms of what Margarito could do to Cotto.

Margarito got into range plenty of times and landed plenty of the same sort of leather that did so much damage the first time.

  27. steve_dave

How could having one eye NOT be a disadvantage offensively?

Come on guys, call it down the middle.

Apples and Oranges. Hatton was finished by then, it's not just his boxing resilience which ran out, he was in rehab a few months after.

Just because he won the fight doesn't mean he's more durable. He beat Mosley, but I would never say Cotto is more durable than Mosley. There's a difference between being a very good fighter and a very good fighter who's durable.

I'm not saying Cotto is fragile, I'm just saying he wears his pain on his sleeve unlike a lot of other top fighters that have come and gone. It's not taking anything away from the guy, he's still a very good fighter and he does fight through the pain.

  30. Anthony

Isnt this the very definition of durable?
