How do you rate his chin? I have seen Mexicans with good chins before but this cat seems to have one of the best chins I have seen in sometime.
he has a good chin, but not a great, all-time chin He was knocked out by an old man a couple of years ago Cotto isn't a big puncher, especially when he is punching largely in retreat...
He got hurt badly towards the end the of the 6th yesterday with a single-left hook. He has a very good chin, but he's been beaten down before.
Shitty defensive fighters who come forward expecting to get hit tend to always have overrated chins... I'm more impressed by guys who get caught blind by monster countershots in mid punch who never go down or get knocked out... Juan LaPorte had a 10 times better chin than Margarito
Good point - I'm always stunned when I see see fighters get hit by an explosive, meaty counter shot they don't see coming, and it does nothing. Plasterito DOES have a high theshold for punishment though obviously, he can take a fuck load of flush shots and keep coming forward, it has to be said.
He's tough and willing to take punishment But guys with all-time chins don't get knocked out by Shane Mosley or hurt by Daniel Santos
Lamotta got similarly stopped against a 160 Robinson, Bonavera got full KTFOd against Ali. Take enough bombs off a good puncher you get stopped
I think the Mosley fight was different, his being caught had thrown him right off. Even at that, he took a beating for 8 rounds before he folded. He's got a very good chin, but he isn't LaMotta, not even close. @Hut, LaMotta went into that fight with weight issues and in fairness, Robinson teeing off on you and old Mosley teeing off on you are two different games of golf, no??? I'd rate him pretty equal to a prime Hatton. Very very tough. But not beyond stopping.
It really is, as much as I despise him - his chin/toughness can't be denied. I do also think his mind wasn't really on the job against Shane after getting busted, which contributed to him getting stopped, along with Mosley's excellent performance obviously. He was getting whacked with HARD shots by Manny and Cotto, walking right into them too, and just kept on coming.
boderline blasphemous, maybe, but I think a 147 Mosley & 160 Robinson are comparable punchers. Robinson threw about twice as many punches which probably made him more dangerous, but Mosley could plenty-punch at 147 and Robinson wasn't the same puncher at middle. But you're right Tony isn't quite a Lamotta type chin, no. But a true A-grade chin, nonetheless.
No one's going to mention the weight as a factor against Mosley? Id say it was the principle factor actually, such an unusual anomaly is it when assessing what is a great set of whiskers.
Ah right, good memory. Didn't remember that, might well have contributed too. Either way even if he was at 100% he took one heeeeel of a beeeeting. LORD BEAVERBROOK! MAGGY THATCHER CAN YOU HEAR ME?
His legs looked so bad though. I recall looking into his pre-fight story to find more on it after Mosley poleaxed him. Mosley simply isnt a puncher on such a level as to do that unless Margarito were weakened, which he apparently was.
Margarito showed a great chin against Mosley. He was hit over and over and over again by hard shots that Mosley was loading up on and stayed on his feet until the 8th. He was also weakened to the body. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/EaNGSRGTqUs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
The N.Y Commission is lucky Margarito didn't die. It was obvious from round one the guy can't see. The doctor who approved him to fight is SCUM. I hope he enjoys the kickback. To be fair, if I ever wanted to see a fighter die in the ring(which I don't), it would be Margarito.
Mosley's an underrated puncher, IMO. Not a elite puncher but a better one than most people acknowledge
He is not a puncher at all. 90% of his kayos came because he is a welterweight who fought B level barely world class fighters at lightweight. He kayoed Margarito because he hit him 100,000 times on the chiN, with speed, leverage and accuracy. Where you hit someone and when is more important than power. Margarito was hit so fast, he couldn't roll with the punches. Mayweather has kayos too by the same technique. He is no puncher.
I agree with you, Hut. This still didnt sit quite right, though. Hes not THAT big a hitter. He hurt Margarito all day and all night. Wait. You dont think...? LOL.
Good point. I also want to point out that Santos was @170+ fight night against Margarito. He can take a hell of a shot there is no denying that.
exactly, the guy takes flush punches after straight punches, and it's not like he braces for them and stopped throwing punches a la Tua/Chuvalo, he gets countered to death in every fight. he has one of the better chin I ever saw. Hagler almost never got caught flush
Shane's body attack DID have alot to do with him stopping Phony. Whoever pointed that out is 100% correct. It was actually a right hand to the body that started the begining for Phony in that fight. Still, Phony's chin is overrated. Its not all time great, although it is very solid.
