The ginger can take his brother, but how does he do against the man himself?

Cotto is too compact and concise for him right now. Too proper, too correct, and too experienced.

Cotto would hurt him badly and give him a round by round breakdown beating now that Cotto is Cotto once again..despita a few years and a few hard fights. BTW the Clottey fight as someone said was a bitch. Cotto showed his true grit and determination that fight. ...GS

I'll be unfashionable and say I give Canelo a fighting chance.

The Cotto of last night thrashes Freckles.

BTW - Mike Jones would outbox Ginger.

The same old Cotto thrashes Freckles.

Its gonna take a VERY OLD Cotto to lose to Freckles.

Canelo in alot of ways is just a far less talented version of Cotto. Perhaps Ginger is slightly more heavy handed, but thats it. Cotto is more talented, and more skilled than Ginger will EVER be.

You look at Cintron- old, balding, slow and not very good to begin with, not much of a warrior.

Yet he had that pudgy Irish tinker blowing like a Blue Whale that's spend a month underwater. And Cintron is the very antithesis of Cotto- he's gangly, spider-like and awkward.

Cotto is just too compact for the openings Alvarez leaves. He's too proper and correct and if you give Cotto time and space, he'll get his combos off, get on his bike, and wear you down.

We've seen Cotto adapt- in and out of the ring. He's adapted out of the ring from a pressure-fighter to a competent bomb-disposal expert, he's adapted in the ring in the Clottey and Mosley fights. Against Mosley, he got on his toes, pumped the jab and negotiated the distance. Versus Clottey, he stopped boxing and started fighting.

Clottey, Mosley, Margarito....alone is better than anyone Alvarez has fought.

Put it to you like this: Cotto has a fought a lot of Gingers. Ginger has not fought anyone like Cotto.

All you basically have to do is watch their respective fights with Alfonso Gomez to see the differance in quality between the two.

Cotto gave Gomez a brutal beating while toying with him in the process.

Canelo was being fought on even terms with Gomez until he hurt him.

Gomez only claim to fame was to beat down an over the hill Gatti here in AC..but Gatti was already involved with that Brazil bitch and her mafia...
gomez is a c level fighter..extremely nice person but not a fighter on more thana C level..well B minus..didn't he beat Manfredo on the tv show Pretenders?...lol...
Cotto is an all time Boricua great..his git to come back and beat a determined Clottey showed his skill, courage and comback attidtude. Love you Miguel! El Padrino

X, what about Freckles Power? He seems to have some serious punching power.

He's heavy handed, but idk about "serious power".

He DOES hit hard though. That, and the fact that Cotto is hittable and getting older, is the only reason Ginger would have SOMEWHAT of a chance.

Skill wise, Cotto has him badly outgunned.

And no, even though Ginger is only 21, does not mean he'll develop Cotto's skills. He'll never have Cotto's skill and fluidity.

Pretty weak logic. Canelo lost 1 round and stopped Gomez 1 round later. They're the only two men to ever beat Gomez that convincingly. I won't bore you with examples of where X beating Z MUCH more convincingly than Y did meant nothing, never mind when the difference is that insignificant.

Alvarez looks like nothing, I just have a suspicion he's better than he looks. About as good as a 154 Cotto, actually. Patient/methodical/deliberate guys tend to play to the level of their opponents. I admit Im probably totally wrong, just a feeling i have

He'll definitely never have Cotto's speed. That's certainly true.

Hut, fancy a bet if the fight comes off?

I'm confident that Cotto not only wins, but does so in pretty 1 sided fashion.

Well, we've seen FAR bigger upsets than Canelo over Cotto. So yeah, it COULD happen.

    Probably wouldnt though.

Canelo would have to force a war. He sure as fuck aint outboxing Cotto.

    Cotto's speed is pretty average.

He's never been a speed demon. But he is better in every single area than Ginger, including stamina even.

Ginger might have a chin advantage, we don't know what punishment he can take, but that's literally it. And youth obviously.

Nah man, no thanks. Part of me's playing devil's advocate coz I like Canelo's approach. You can see him thinking in there, he's slow and he's inactive but he's measuring while he does it -he works well with what he's got. And he wins round after round, which is something you usually notice overhyped fighters on the cusp of being found out don't. They're usually dropping rounds while they rack up their highlight reel KOs. But anyway, nah, I wouldn't bet on him against Cotto at even odds.

It's hard to look past both mens last fights.

Cotto looked good against a dangerous if depleted foe.

Alvarez looked scrubby against a scrub.

Also, Alvarez isn't banging anyone out. He's drop-stopping them or shining with clean combo's with the referee leaping in at an opportune moment. It all reeks of good management, protection, constant pruning and handling, stage management.

That in turn suggests, to me at least, that something is afoot. His own people know he isn't ready or needs helping.

If Cintron had a bit of guts and wasn't wasted, it would have been interesting to see him drag Canelo into deep water {which, for Canelo that night, would have been the 6th and 7th rounds } and see what happens.

To me, both were good B (ish) grade fighters on the downslide. Tony was always better than Kermit but, but then Alvarez beat Cintron with more ease than Cotto beat Tony.

Again, people get fixated on the fact Alvarez looks so ordinary. Monzon looked hella ordinary but the results kept belying that. (just an exampe not a direct comparion! :scared2:)

Cotto is a bit too seasoned right now, but I'm with Hut in the sense that I don't see Cotto dishing out some one-sided beating...

Last night, he had a one-eyed punching bag in front of him, he won every round but failed to truly beat the shit out of the guy, he backtracked all night, landed some nice clean punches and let Margarito's integumentary system take care of the rest... I don't see him beating the shit out of Alvarez at this point in his career, Alvarez has two eyes, he doesn't come right at you with no defense whatsoever, he's much younger and he seems to be in the right place at this weight, Margarito hardly posseses an illustrious history at 154... Cotto is a better and more skilled fighter than Canelo, but he's also old and despite being a good boxer, he has severe limitations that he has NEVER improved upon, he can not fight inside, he fails to vary his movement for long periods of time... he's not so good that he just kills this kid, though I'd agree he'd be favored to win... this isn't Jose Napoles we are matching Canelo against here

probably... but would Cotto/Cintron have looked any different than Canelo/Cintron did? I don't think it would have

Yes. Cotto is not durable. Cotto probably doesn't stop Kermit in his "prime" to use the term loosely.

I was saying right now... if Cotto right now fought the same Cintron that the Celtic Mexican fought, would he have done any better? I don't really think he would have
