Slappy gets in because he's a famous American. His credentials are very weak.

He beat one reigning champion--Fernando Montiel--who happens to be his best win and imo his only really good win. I'll give him credit for locking up Montiel, but I really think that fight had more to do with Montiel sucking than Johnson being better.

When you look at the top 4 fighters he faced, he went 1-4.

I thought he lost to Alberto Jimenez.

I don't even know who his best win is other than Montiel because the drop off is pretty steep after the top 4.

That was to correct a robbery, not to cause one.

:bears: IMO Well deserved. I know, mikE, you have always been a detractor. I think he deserved the nod in fight #1 with R/Marquez, great win over Montiel and imo one of the most impressive KO's of all time over Arthur Johnson. I think Johnson deserves to be here.

it took the most racist referee in tejas and a commission with erasers to help a great bantamweight 'defeat' a past prime flyweight.

his fight vs. marquez was close. great fight though. didn't he get a point deduction for hitting rafa while holding him w/ a front headlock or someshit?

What a surprise youre defending that. If you can deflect him fouling his missus, no dramas excusing what he did to Marquez.

    mY bad, haha

Interestingly enough, the internet seems to agree with you. Entering search terms such as "mark johnson too sharp prison beat wife" really didn't get me the information I was after, just a brief mention about a probation violation in 2000, but I was thinking there was something far more recent....hmmmm

I don't like Tapia, but his resume shits on Too Slap's even if you take away the Medina robbery. Tapia actually beat some good fighters.

Tapia knocked out Cesar Soto in 3 rounds. Tapia clearly hit harder than Naseem Hamed and Luisito Espinosa.

Tapia and Romero both blatantly avoided Too Sharp. It was hardly a secret. Every time Johnson moved up to Tapia's weight to challenge for his title, Tapia would vacate and move up to the next weight class. It was disgusting.

It was criminal how Johnson was avoided by the best. Tough to argue the reverse to be true (that he avoided tough challenges) when you consider who he faced on the way up.

Anyway, glad to see my BWAA peers get this one right. Hearns was a gimme, the other two were crap shoots.

My only disappointment is that Myung-Woo Yuh didn't make it in, and chances are it will be years before he's even considered again considering the next few classes.

I don't really think either avoided Slappy, but I'm up for proof I'm wrong.

At some point you have to blame a fighter for his own shitty resume. Defend Johnson's resume. It's pretty damn hard to. It's filled with weak challengers and losses to the few quality guys he faced with one exception only.

Now look at what Yuh did. It elephant shits on what Johnson accomplished. People bitch about the possibility of Gatti getting in. If Johnson deserves to, the floodgates are open. Gatti was way more famous and accomplished way more than Johnson.

The difference is that Johnson had the novelty of being a black American flyweight. I suppose I'll throw in the fact that he was 'everybody's' bottom of the top 10 p4p guy, sort of like Ivan Calderon was lately.

I think you make Johnson white, hispanic, or a non-American and there's no way he gets in. What evidence do I have of this? Myung-Woo Yuh, for starters. Yuri Arbachakov for seconds. I'd guess it would take several pages to name all of the guys not in the HOF who objectively accomplished more than Johnson, but aren't in.

He's no more of a hard puncher than Calzaghe was.

Arce, Chiquita, Darchinyan...those are hard punchers for the weight class area. Too Slap was a fast puncher.

Anyone want to try to defend his piss poor resume now? Crickets.
