Russian boxer Roman Simakov has died in hospital without regaining consciousness after suffering heavy injuries in a bout against Sergey Kovalev on December 5.

The 27-year-old was defending his WBC Asian Boxing Council light heavyweight belt against former compatriot Kovalev, who now lives in the US, in a match held in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg,

Simakov suffered a knockdown in the sixth round, with the fight turning into a one-sided affair thereafter.

The bout was stopped one round later, with Kovalev being awarded a TKO victory and Simakov taken straight to hospital.

“The patient was delivered to our emergency room in a coma,â€￾ the hospital’s emergency department informed Lifesport.ru. “The patient was in such a serious condition that we didn’t even have time to do an MRI. An urgent craniotomy was performed, with a large bruise on the right of the skull removed.â€￾

The doctors fought for the boxer’s life for three days, but he passed away on the night of December 8 without regaining consciousness.

The athlete will be buried in his home city of Kemerovo.

Roman Simakov has taken part in 22 professional bouts during his career, collecting 19 wins (9 KOs), two defeats and a draw.

In and out of the ring, Im sure. I wonder what Kovalev makes of it all.

I just saw a photo of him. He doesn't look like the thinking sort.

Here is Kovalev vs Matt Korobov

It does make you stop and pause, Ekaterinburg really is in the middle of nowhere, it makes Columbus Ohio look central.......for all the slick presentations, ppv, you name it...the people who make the sport are the unseen fodder monkeys, toiling away in regional, rural backwaters. Needless to say, Kevin Mitchell and the other mainstream press outlets have managed to bang out an extra 20 Khan articles with no mention of this guy at all.

Our Russian correspondent (Alexey Sukachev) spoke on it at length last week:

And then also Kovalev's emotional response two days later:

I didn't realize it was the first ever in-ring fatality in Russian boxing.

Sad tale. Kovalev is a true professional and I feel terrible for him. The worst part for the parents had to be that they flew in (on Kovalev's dime) but missed seeing their own son alive by 30 minutes.

    Just terrible news all around.

I meant the broadsheet papers, the sort of stuff the non-hardcore fan reads. I am still looking through some of them....maybe they will pick up on it as the Khan stuff settles. I think Randy Carver got a mention in Ring and some of the local newspapers, ditto Stephan Johnson.

I hadn't ever heard of another death in the ring in Russia, of course pro boxing is only there around 20 years or so now.

From what you say of Kovalev he seems too nice to get over this too quickly, he's probably finished one way or the other.

    Awful. RIP.

Always makes you pause for a second... sometimes I ask myself why I support something as savage as boxing. I never really have an answer, other than 'When it's good, I love it'

For some unknown, but fortunate, reason, ring deaths have dropped off greatly since the late 90's and early to mid 00's. At least empirically.

RIP. Horrible stuff, I think as boxing fans the dangers are things we always try and push to the back of our minds, then something like this happens and you have to question why you like it. It's like a drug though man.
