I think we should find out Cooper's address and send him letters of encouragement, so he doesn't get disheartened by all these hometown ref accusations etc in what is possibly his first high profile bout.

Sure thing. If we can bully that fat bouncer who smacked the guy around in the toilets then we can write letters of encouragement to Joe Cooper.

That said the "let's throw some thunder" the purple gloves and the zoot-suit pants have got to go.

    :lol::lol:

No doubt, there's plenty of polishing to do with Cooper, but he has great potential.

John Ruiz whined similarly after the Roy Jones fight when the ref didn't let him use his usual 1 punch, grab and hold tactic.

"I was robbed because the ref didn't put up with my cheating tactics!" Wah, Wah!!

Unfortunately that fight also went to Jay Nady's head, and now he doesn't let fighters get inside each other at all before breaking them apart. :shit:

Hopefully our adulation of referee Joseph Cooper doesn't encourage him to start entering the ring with a pimp cane, a bad attitude and a penchant for throwing fighters out of the ring every time they look at him with that "What you talkin' about Willis!" gaze.

Poor Joseph Cooper. Probably got a nice bonus for that delicious display of non-partisanship, but is that really enough? No way. I think if Eugenia Williams hadn't been blocking his view in the 5th round, he would have been able to dq Amir Khan and put Lamont on his deserved path to glory even sooner.

Yeah I remember when he went to Showtime for the Mosley fight. Now he's back at HBO.

He might ask them to start throwing lightning if we praise him too much.

Yes, and do you know what else? During the Vitali Klitschko vs Danny Williams fight, Nady warned Williams for holding and hitting and Lampley piped up:

"John Ruiz coulda told you that Jay Nady doesn't let you hold and hit" and then he added "Roy Jones coulda told you Jay Nady doesn't let you hold and hit" with much giggling between him and Jones, who was doing color.

Yet when Cooper enforced the rules, Lampley started to piss and moan, as did that fuck Lederman, who never shut the fuck up about Wlad when he broke the rules by holding....neither in the first Peter fight NOR the Byrd rematch.

These fuckers know the sport of boxing and they enforce the rules when it suits them and the abandon the rules when it suits them.

    Fuck that.

So you hate it when Wlad holds then?

No, but it is rule breaking in certain circumstances. Wlad was being nailed behind the head by a 19 Stone man, so, in the circumstances, you could let it slide. Peter was getting his rabbit punches off regardless. Also Khan wasn't just holding. Wlad threw a lot of quality leather, and, in the Byrd fight, claims that he was holding were valid only where he started to hold Byrd upright.

The point is that Lampley and co know the rules, and are happy to let them slide where they see fit, eg Barrera butt-barring Hamed into the ringpost, Ortiz burrowing purposely with his head vs Berto, etc.

What's interesting to compare Saturday's events, of which GBP has been highly critical, to those of the first Mares/Agbeko fight.

Stop Peter from throwing rabbit shots and Wlad probably stops holding in any case.

In Petersons case, Khan was pushing, elbowing, holding down Petersons head, throwing shots on the break etc in response to good clean fair pressure.

Its not like Peterson worked him below the cup or nutted him square in the forehead or anything.

As for the ByrdII fight, Lederhosen was talking about holding where there was none, Byrd was on the verge of being floored again and Lederman injected it. Even Lampley had to tell him it was nonsense.

Hey, boxing evolved last Saturday night. From this point forward, no rule infraction shall go unpunished. Even those that have never been punished prior. Rules are rules.

    For the foreigners, anyway.

You're missing something very important: the response of fighters.

Your take on the impact of such enforcement overlooks the natural tendency of fighters to want to avoid deductions and Dqs by following ref's instructions.

No, it didn't. The conclusion was that boxing would look nothing like it does now. That's because of the point you are making.

First of all, I'm having trouble remembering a time when a fighter pushed his opponent as blatantly and as often as Khan did Peterson. Care to share with us examples? Since you're pressing us all for instances in which deductions for such behavior occured?

Second, the changes you highlighted were, "more point deductions" and more DQ's. That supposes fighters would keep doing it, even in the face of increased scrutiny.

The reality is, it wouldn't take long at all for fighters to adjust their tactics to comply with the rule. As a result, it might well be different. But the principal difference would not be deductions and DQ's, but rather, a more professional and legitimate style of boxing.

If they really cracked down, a certain percentage of fighters who make it in today's environment simply wouldn't, just as there'd be a type of fighters who today haven't made it, but in such a world, would.

I wouldn't feel too worried about that happening when you consider the number of stinky ass fights we're subjected to these days.

Wlad holds constantly, and in the Peter fight he was holding incessantly, not just to avoid rabbit punches. You're full of shit and everyone knows it, which is why nobody takes your opinions seriously.
