Oscar De La Hoya vs. Mark Breland @ WW

Hoya gets Breland out of there eventually... comes down to who can take it... Hoya can, Breland can't... simple as that

 

Oscar in 5 rounds tops.

 

Once Oscar find a way to land the left hook squarely Breland goes down like a sack of potatoes.

 

Delahoya never knocked out any welterweights as good as breland.

 

He stopped Rivera and Carr, two pretty decent B level welters and came within seconds of doing the same to Quartey. He also knocked out Vargas @ 154 which is a bigger accomplishment than stopping Breland at 147 would have been.

 

Oscar wasn't used to facing more lanky opponents. Perhaps he would have been scared of Breland's lankiness?

 

my statement stands. breland was better than carr and rivera. dont see this being an easy fight for delahoya at all.

 

Possibly. Also if Breland was scared of Oscar's shoulders it could be a very boring matchup as neither guy would engage. Both corners would be trying different psychological tactics to help their fighters overcome their fears.

Indeed he was, but I'd say both those guys (even Oba) were more durable than Mark

You know me, Ramonza, I'm not a Hoya fan at all and I never was, but Neil makes him sound like this inept bum who couldn't beat anyone... that's just not the case, he was undeniably very good at the least

 

I would never call De La Hoya an all-time great, but he was a great of his time (he was, & with good reason, consistently among the top-5, P4P-ranked fighters for the better part of a decade), & that is no small feat.

Great fighter, De La Hoya. Not all-time material, but he was certainly more capable than Neil would like us to believe. I'm not actually sure I've seen one forum member, on any board ever, so begrudging of a single fighter. Perhaps Granberry with Ali & Leonard at the old BoxRec ::

 

There's plenty to dislike about DLH, but to me he was a good fighter who fought plenty of other good fighters and win or lose, he competed very closely with them... He had good skills, quick hands, good feet and he had power, especially in the left hook which was a terrific shot to head and body, quick and precise. He was clearly a quality fighter, like him or hate his guts.

 

It's not that I can't see the reasons for dislike, CDogg (hatred is a bit strong to me, but hey, I'm a fan) --- it's that the same people who despise him & spit venom his way are often excuse-mongering fans of rapists, sexual assaulters, wife-beaters, thugs, & all manner of criminal scumbags.

I mean, where is the moral compass?

 

Carr was a shell of himself when they fought. Not to mention he was WINNING the fight until richard steele began to deduct points like his name was Tony Reali. hardly the fight Id use as basis delahoya could stop a fighter the caliber of breland.

durability is not the only factor in stopping a foe. the incoming vs breland would be completely different than rivera or a washed up carr.

 

You wouldn't use any fight as a basis for it. You would argue De La Hoya couldn't stop you...::

Well, I don't think its so much a question of morals (this is boxing, after all) as much as it is that people really dislike when a guy is disingenuous... SRL is one of the greatest to ever fight and few ever deny that, but he is also one of the most reviled ever... SRL was not a nice guy by any means, but there have been worse people involved in boxing, the difference is that Leonard is fake, extremely fake and he was treated as a god by the mainstream for years, the same way Oscar once was... Oscar is fake, he is a guy who lies naturally, just like Leonard and I think in the confines of boxing where criminal behavior is frequently hand-in-glove with the game and we all come to expect it in varying degrees, that type of phoniness is in some ways a bigger sin to fight fans. The fact that Oscar is also in a position of considerable power in a corrupt sport with no compass at all (to use your word) does not help him score a lot of admirers.

But durability is a question ALWAYS for Mark Breland, it has to be. Honestly, man, I think we could match Hoya with Gene "Mad Dog" Hatcher and you'd find a reason to lessen his chances.

 

I dispute any claim you make toward credibility on this subject. Youre not even in here arguing De La Hoya loses --- youre just attempting to make him LOOK bad.

And I think you should address his stopping Vargas (on PEDs) with something meatier than, "my point stands," before we talk about how De La Hoya bringing down Breland (which he would).

 

Sad but true.

 

All I know is Mark Johnson would wake up in a hospital had they ever fought.

 

Breland is competitive, but eventually gets KOed.
