Let's just look at it this way: the last guy to openly call him a slapper got fucked up, cut up, dropped and ruined in front of his girlfriend and girlfriends mom and Fatty Shaw. Sure, he wasn't about power, but neither was Billy Conn, and he hurt Joe Louis off a single left hook. Joe could hit plenty hard. He had hand issues and just like Tommy Loughran that ate into his power. He hit harder than Jeff Lacy. <object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ttfnUbMmGTs?version=3&feature=player_detailpage"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ttfnUbMmGTs?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object> "uuuhhh....he was overrated".....Fightbeat was FUCKING SILENT that night. "Silent Night Silent Night Fightbeat Quiet Joe's a Riot Round Yon Deserted General Discussion Joe Now Landing Steady Percussion Jeff The Lacy Is Scorned Jeff The Lacy Is Scorned"
Calzaghe, last I saw him, was a coke freak, and fat. :kick: Even Froch was referring to him as the "sad fatboy".:scared2: "where's the fucking cheese at"???
Calzaghe is Welsh. He'd tunnel his way out. Half way through falling down the chute he would change tactics and start falling his way UP the chute.
He's Southern Italian. They don't even have future tense verbs down there, he'd sit in his comfortable wee hole. Probably hoping the mine got old and an escape route appeared
if only you didn't wear Jaws' underpants over your head in that video, then we could tell you if you do in fact look a little like Calzaghe
That was a shocking fight. As the lone North American Calzaghe fan, I felt vindicated. However, I was also a big fan of Lacy and wouldn't have minded him winning. I thought Joe would win although he was no longer in his prime. I expected a fight that would be close enough that my fellow Yanks would cry robbery. I was shocked at how brutal the beating Lacy took. I know it is against boxing culture, but sometimes your corner just needs to say, you lost tonight. Jeff also had a horrific shoulder injury but the beating he took that night certainly shortened his career.
Yeah, it's easy to say Lacy wasn't much in retrospect (I, along with many fans, do feel that way) But there's no disputing it was a big fight, and there's something to be said for performing the way Calzaghe did in such an event.
calzaghe fought well against lacy and it was one of his better wins. at the time i favored lacy because of calzaghe's age, inactivity and brittle mitts. not because of lacy being anything great. i saw him struggle with a feather fisted guy who can box, at the playboy mansion.
Queer. Why the fuck would I ever wear any person's underwear on my head. We aren't all Polish queers like you. That might be normal in your family. Stop projecting. That is like the fifth time you have expressed disappointment in not seeing a clear picture of me. I am not interested. If I were gay, I could do better than some retarded Aussie/Pole. It was my windbreaker although to someone with your obvious lack of heterosexuality you project an underwearless Free Ike. Go fuck Santa you Polish faggot.
He wasn't great either. I just don't think he was as bad as he became. He literally never could throw a hook after his shoulder was torn. That isn't a good sign when your name is Left Hook. Unlike most people, I thinkl Joe was a great fighter although he never proved it. I also think Roy Jones would have smashed him but he would have a chance against any other super middle and a few good light heavies. Too bad he grew balls late in his career and by that I mean coming here to fight Slopkins and dominating him.
There's no doubt, and what shocked a lot of people was that Joe was the harder, stronger man in there. Physiognomy is a false science. Popeye muscles don't mean strength. A whip hurts more than a steel bar, especially when the whip lands. Shaw was a disgrace. He could have pulled Lacy out a lot earlier and then at the end he tried to make it look like he was pulling Lacy out. The 7th and 8th rounds saw Lacy battered off clean effective punching that had him hurt badly. I thought he might go out that round.
Another thing too.....the Lacy vs JC fight was ruined by that bitch at ringside screaming her balls off. She had hardened fight figures, including some boxers who had seen it all before, or thought they had, throwing very nervous looks in her direction. She was out of control. I guess she could see the rocks and the cars going down the chute. Ironically, if Lacy never took that fight, he could have gone on and been an integral part of the Super 6.
They really don't, from what I've read. At least not in Sicily. Possibly a factoid, but the quote came from a sicilian poet, so I took it as read that he knew. I know where enzo was from....it's part of italy and it's southern.:dunno:
Well thanks. But Sardinia is part of Italy, no? And it's geographically (& ethnically) 'southern Italian', in as far as it's Italian.
that's where I was at on that fight I never though Lacy was anything good, but Calzaghe never impressed me either and I figured Lacy could win. It was more about how low I rated Calzaghe (and I still fucking DO-- he was a good fighter and had a good run in a shit era against terrible opposition, there's got to be 30 guys who have weighed in the vicinity of 170 pounds at one time or another who I would pick over him without hesitation) than it was about thinking Lacy was anything special
Yea but it's not just any fighter now is it, it's one of the best there's been in the last however many years
