Compare that to mid-late nineties back when i was really really into it. Recording fights on VHS and all that. It's kinda sad. Damn all you black guys who chose to play football !

I agree it sucks. But I don't think it has to do with a absence black people or football unless you're referring to the heavyweight division in particular. And even then it's debatable.

Otherwise, consider that Andre Ward just fought. So did Andre Dirrell. PBF is in the mix. Mike Jones. Broner. Peterson. Dawson. Hopkins.

I blame promoters most of all. But boxers too are becoming less and less passionate in their performances, managing to take a more pragmatic approach to their careers, employing safety-first styles, grappling, and a lack of killer instinct.

It's been a slow transformation and it's difficult to trace it's beginnings, but basically, we find ourselves in a situation in which:

the best fighters refuse to face each other

    fans won't abide losses

fighters are quickly written off if they lose

promoters refuse to work with one another, each one fancying itself as a separate brand

cable tv doesn't reward actual success, but perceived success - they're interested in showing the best fighters, not the best fights. in most cases, this means showing shitty fights.

like fantasy fag foot-ball fans, too many boxing fans are caught up with following fighters and the sport itself is secondary. do fag fantasy foot-ball fans even watch the games? i know some who don't.

Why would you complain? You like it the way it is. P4P lists of super-heros you can dream about and how invincible and great they all are as long as they don't lose. And they're so fast and talented.

Truthfully, I'm just as bored of boxing as the next man. BOSS, however, is an inbred cunt.

Two men grappling on the canvas just after a few moments of throwing wild amateurish punches and little kicks to the legs. :wack:

Yeah. MMA doesn't do it for me either. I'll watch Strike-force sometimes, but honestly, it's pretty fucking boring, and the fighters don't seem particularly honed if you ask me.

You're watching the minor leagues brotha. MMA is never going to be boxing, it's more brawling that boxing. You can't take a traditional boxing stance in MMA, and not get your leg kicked to death or taken down. There is no standing in front of your opponent slipping punches and showing great boxing defense. You can't do that when the other guy can just grab you. So many things prevent good boxing in MMA, it's not even fair to say "These guys suck at boxing" because they are not boxing. Unless you have seen them in an actual boxing match, we have no idea if they suck or not.

Nowadays people start threads about Amir Khan's twitter page, back in the day people wouldn't start an Amir Khan thread if the guy got run over by a bus.

But what you said was dead on. You can't just "box" in mma you have to be on the look out for kicks, knees, superman punches, flying knees, takedowns etc etc. You can't just sit back relax and box away, it's not boxing like you said.

I recognize that. It's part of the reason I don't enjoy the fights. Grappling, holding and ground fighting does nothing for me.

So UFC is better than Strikeforce? I've watched UFC too, but I'm done paying for the events, and it seems like they show fewer and fewer meaningful fights on non-premium cable, although Spike used to rebroadcast a lot of major older fights.

I understand what you're saying. And besides what you mentioned, there's also the fact they're using smaller gloves.

I think for me it's one of two things that make it less appealing. Either:

    1. Their sport/art is less pleasing aesthetically. This explanation assumes the combatants are every bit as honed as boxers - it's simply that their style of fighting isn't as, "pretty," as boxing.

    2. MMA fighters haven't achieved the same degree of mastery of their craft that boxers have, such that the fights appear sloppy, clumsy and not fluid.

Either way, I don't find it as compelling as boxing.

If I were an aspiring MMA guy, I'd try to find ways to win prettier. There was one guy, I forget his name, who knocked someone out with a kick he threw in the air, having vaulted himself first off the side of the cage. That was impressive. And there have been highlight reel knock-outs, and stunning submissions. But it's the second to second action, when guys are trying to build leads or gain an advantage that lack the poetry of a good boxing match.

Yes. Not that Strikeforce doesn't have some talent, they do. Like Gilbert Melendez, who would do well in the UFC. Most of their guys are up and comers though, who could eventually move to the UFC. Especially since they are now both owned by Zuffa LLC.

I can understand people not likeing the grappling aspect of MMA, it's not for everyone and the fights are more violent than pretty for sure.

Double L and *Z*'s posts seem to offer a lot more ojbectivity than the boxing-fans perspective, which to be honest, sounds like the sort of thing my Dad would say: "wasn't like this in my day, don't understand it, blah, blah, blah"

I wouldn't say it's zero watchability...I used to dismiss MMS because I was ignorant about it.
Now, the older I get, Im far more interested in each UFC event than I am about any current boxing event.

Boxing has just slipped off the radar for me: always making headlines for the wrong reasons, everyone trying to screw each other over, Fighter A won't fight Fighter B for whatever lame-ass reason, boxers going to jail, boxers dressing up as chicks, boxers hanging themselves, etc, etc and when there is a big, big fight, it invariably falls flat on its face.

Seriously, when was the last time a boxing match was considered great and /or caught the public imagination?
Furthemore, who is actually worth watching now? :dunno:
