No jail for Mayweather 'till June

Undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Friday avoided jail time until June 1 in a Las Vegas domestic violence case involving an attack on his ex-girlfriend while two of their children watched in September 2010.

Mayweather, 34, had been scheduled to turn himself in Friday to begin serving a 90-day sentence imposed last month.

Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa said she weighed Mayweather's contractual obligations to a fight set for May at MGM Grand in Las Vegas against an as-yet unnamed opponent.

Mayweather's lawyer Richard Wright had pleaded with the judge to allow Mayweather to fulfill commitments regarding the fight, emphasizing the economic benefit to Las Vegas when Mayweather fights.

Mayweather pleaded guilty Dec. 21 to a reduced battery domestic violence charge and no contest to two harassment charges.

The plea deal saw prosecutors drop felony and misdemeanor charges that could have gotten Mayweather 34 years in prison.

Authorities say the case stems from a hair-pulling, punching and arm-twisting argument with Josie Harris, the mother of three of Mayweather's children, and threats to beat their sons in an argument about Harris dating another man. Harris, now 31, lives in the Los Angeles area with the couple's sons, now 12 and 10, and a daughter age 8.

Mayweather has earned upward of $20 million for his most recent fights against Victor Ortiz, which won him the WBC welterweight belt, and Shane Mosley.

Mayweather is generally recognized as one of the two best boxers in the world, sharing that spotlight with Manny Pacquiao.

Jail time is expected to limit training for a possible Cinco de Mayo date for a fight in Las Vegas, where Mayweather's management reserved a May 5 date at the MGM Grand Garden Arena for a possible fight.

Why the hell should the economic impact be considered at all? What a joke. Oh well. What do I care? Why don't they just let rich people do whatever they want, and only put regular people in jail?

Might be the best time to catch him, as prison time might be on his mind. He may not perform to his best.

It's not prison. It's jail. Which he (and his dad and uncle) are plenty used to.

BOTH sides are at fault in this. Neither wants the bout, IMHO

Neither side wants this fight, IMHO. Arum made all of these excuses, but Golden Boy didn't reach out to him when sentence delayed.

Make no mistake: There have been times the lack of Pacquiao-Mayweather has been the fault of both sides. Right now it's the Pacquiao side.

There is absolutely no reason Pacquiao-Mayweather shouldn't be on May 5 other than the fact that Arum doesn't want to make it.

Richard Schaefer placed blame squarely on Arum for the fact that there won't be Pacquiao-Mayweather on May 5. I happen to agree. #boxing

In other news, in the Pac vs Mayweather defamation lawsuit, Mayweather is asking the court to make Pac provide ALL medical records for the past 15 years so he can look them over for signs of PED use. I am not kidding either.

Well that's ridiculous. Being called on unfounded allegations doesn't give you a right to see personal and confidential records.

No clue how he managed to weasel out of jail time though....

Floyd will fight an easy opponent this time. His people ain't stupid and they know the jail issue might compromise his focus, so it's not wise to pick a live opponent. Funny how money talks. Vegas is a powerful place.

Amen. I cannot remember a time in my life when it was so... expected... that "famous" people get better treatment from the establishment in general. Not just crime/punishment related, but every part of the governing and financial system.

Distill this down, and what does it say? "We in Las Vegas will modify our criminal justice system to cater to the financial interest of our local economy." FUCK you. Fuck your all-powerful god, your crutch, your almighty dollar. Floyd was sentenced because he pleaded guilty. He admitted his crime. I don't care what the "rehab" lefties say, jail and prison are for punishment and to remove a proven threat from re-offending. Period. Why the hell does a professional fighter, who is a dangerous man in terms of his capability to harm others, who has proven time and again he will become violent when the most trivial of inconveniences arise, and who has now admitted to a violent outburst against a woman in FRONT of his kids, get to stay out of jail and make more money for a while while no one else does?

    Mind-numbingly frustrating and embarrassing.

News flash - committing a crime and going to jail is SUPPOSED to be inconvenient, and yeah, it does have the side effect of preventing you from working for a while, so sorry. Unbelievable.

It is hard for me to say this as a boxing fan, but even if it were Pac-PBF scheduled next, I'd want to see PBF in jail. Serve your damn time and then schedule a fight, for god's sake it's 90 days.
