White: Silva vs. Sonnen II would likely take place in Brazilian soccer stadium

If Chael Sonnen gets by Mark Munoz later this month at UFC on FOX 2, his next bout could be a huge one.

UFC president Dana White recently joined "UFC Tonight" on FUEL TV to discuss potential plans for a long-awaited rematch.

In the segment, which ultimately didn't make it to air, White said that if Sonnen gets his rematch with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, it'll likely take place in Silva's home country of Brazil – in a soccer stadium.

That means the fight could headline the UFC's second-ever stadium show (the first, UFC 129, took place this past April in Toronto) and its first-ever outdoor event. UFC officials previously have talked about using a Brazilian venue that could accommodate up to 100,000 spectators for a future event.

"We'll see what happens," White said. "We're talking about doing the big fight – obviously, if Sonnen faces Anderson Silva, that's going to be a hot ticket. People from all over the world want to see that. That fight, if that fight goes down, it'll probably happen in Brazil and probably in a soccer stadium."

Sonnen (27-11-1 MMA, 6-4 UFC), who dominated Silva (31-4 MMA, 14-0 UFC) for four rounds before a succumbing to a last-round triangle choke at UFC 117 in 2010, meets Munoz on Jan. 28 in Chicago. If victorious, he'll likely get the Silva fight this summer.

As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) recently reported, White had considered booking the rematch for the UFC's annual Super Bowl weekend show in Las Vegas. Instead, Sonnen will be featured on the UFC's second-ever network-televised event later this month. That could give the already-polarizing fighter even more exposure ahead of what likely will be the UFC's biggest-money fight of 2012.

In addition to that Brazilian event and upcoming shows in Japan and Sweden, White said the UFC is targeting 2012 events for France, China and South Korea.

I think it's moot. I really like Munoz to steam roll Sonnen.

Well, Sonnen's MO is to take guys down and grind out decisions. Munoz is easily the best wrestler Sonnen has ever faced in MMA. His credentials are probably as impressive as Sonnen's.

And Munoz has far, far better striking and is a very dangerous puncher.

I may be wrong but I can see several ways that Munoz can win the fight but only one for Sonnen. The single way Sonnen wins is to take Munoz down and I just think that will be tough.

I don't think it will be boring however.

How do you see it going?

I see Sonnen controlling him on the ground pretty easily. Munoz IMO isnt that good.

I quite like Munoz but I agree with GF, I think Sonnen is simply a better fighter.

I bet Dana is praying Munoz doesn't win because if they end up with Munoz/Silva they're fucked. Munoz couldn't sell a fight if he worked at ticket master.

Aside from guys moving up in weight, I can't think of a single matchup in the UFC that hasn't happened or at least scheduled.

Comparing Silva moving up to fight Jones or GSP moving up to fight Silva is your typical retard comparison. Manny and Floyd are currently fighting at the same weight and I think they BOTH hold 147 pound titles.

I love it when RJJ gets in over his head. Watching him drown in his own stupidity is entertaining.

What is the biggest fight that mma could make? What fight in the ufc would sell more than Silva vs gsp?

Let's also not forget that moving up in weight in MMA is not like boxing where the weight classes are only separated by a few pounds. GSP would have to move up 15 lbs to fight Silva and Silva would be moving up 20lbs to face Jon Jones. This would be like Floyd or Manny moving up to face Andre Ward.

How is that the pac/mayweather of the UFC? They are in seperate weight classes. Pac may have both been at 147 for years. If silva vs. GSP was at the same weight that fight would be made in 2 fucking seconds.

no one's clamoring for gsp vs. silva. i think that potential bout kinda lost its appeal especially since there's chael sonnen involved w/ silva and gsp's gotta worry about nick diaz if he gets by condit. those are more anticipated bouts in my opinion.

Personally I think Jones-Silva would be MUCH bigger.

But it's not the same as Manny-Floyd

Manny and Floyd have both spent the last few years around 147 and fighting multiple opponents but not each other.

The minute GSP, Silva or Jones keep fighting at the same weight, and claiming titles at the SAME weight, you MIGHT have a point.

Right now you're just dense. Manny and Floyd dancing around each other is the biggest joke in combat sports. It's pathetic. There is nothing remotely close in MMA.

Not to mention GSP had a major knee injury. No one cares about him jumping in the cage with Silva right now. No one.

He won't even be the clear champion after Diaz-Condit.

he fought jake shields in 2011 didnt he? i dont remember.

but yea, it looks like he might be out in 2012. i would've picked him for sure vs. either condit or diaz when they were slated to take place, but come 2013, i won't be so sure. he should probably take a tuneup before going against either guy in a five round fight. inactivity harldy helps.

another thing is this, i'm not even sure if diaz or condit will be an interim champ by the time gsp comes back especially when there are guys on a similar level such as koschek, hendricks, shields, sanchez, ellengeberger and fitch.

You make a great point. Great wrestlers at 170 could give either Condit or Diaz trouble. Sanchez would get killed by either. He doesn't belong on your list. And Shields won't fight Diaz and he already beat Condit.

The wrestling of Koscheck, Hendricks or even Fitch would be a tough style match up as neither Nick or Carlos are equipped to stop these high level wrestlers.

That being said, there aren't many tune-up fights in the UFC. I think GSP gets matched immediately with the Condit-Diaz winner. The match will be too big for the UFC to risk either guy getting beat in the interim.

He did defend against Shields in April 2011. But he also had to cancel his last two fights due to injury and likely won't be ready to fight again until probably November 2012. That's 19 months without a title defense. The UFC won't go for that. He won't be stripped but the Condit-Diaz winner will be the interim Champ.

My only question is does the Condit-Diaz winner wait for GSP or do they defend in the meantime against some like Hendricks? Again they will have to wait 10 months for GSP to be ready. That's along time for the belt to sit idle.

It's the same in the sense in it's the biggest fight MMA could stage and it's the guys recognised as number 1 and 2.

Jones isn't a bigger draw than GSP. Look at PPV numbers and gate revenue if you don't believe me.

Wanderlei/Chuck Gomi/Hughes and Fedor/Couture all fought in the same weight classes yet never fought in their primes.

Dude, you're just being stupid now. No one is crying for a GSP-Silva bout now. No one.

It's not the same because it would require one guy to fight 15 pounds outside his weight class.

Face it, Floyd and Manny represent everything wrong with boxing. The two biggest names, at the exact same weight, actively fighting yet avoiding each other like the other one has AIDS.

It's a joke and there is nothing in the UFC that compares. NOTHING. And it's one of the reasons the UFC is growing and boxing is NOT.
