How's a guy like Vernon Forrest - tall and with a good long right-hand, do against PBF? Wouldn't such a figure pose serious problems for PBF? Even ODH, as shitty as his right-hand is, had success landing over the top against PBF. Now imagine a guy with some pop in the right-hand, and the nerve to throw it. Is this why PBF likes his opponents short and small? Because he's vulnerable to long right hands? Who out there can exploit this weakness and bash that little felon into the canvas (and make him cry like a bitch)?
Stylistically, Vernon Forrest would've Had More Success than MOST, vs. Floyd...His Right Hand would B a FACTOR for Sure, if PREFACED by the Left Jab...On that Note, REED has Always Maintained that Tommy Hearns would've Been a Stylistic NIGHTMARE for Floyd... REED:hammert:
Definitely. Hearns' ability to deliver power from range and with speed would've nullified a lot of PBF's advantages. I'd like to see PBF take on a taller fighter with a good right-hand. Who's out there like that right now?
Good point. I think we saw a little of that problem for Floyd against Shane because of his 72" reach and you saw that he had to abandon his usual defensive style and bring his left up. Its worth saying in Floyds defense & praise how impressively he made that adjustment, mind
Thing about the Mosley though: 1. He's relatively short - about the same height as PBF if not shorter 2. He barely threw his right-hand. Whether it's because of PBF's counters or not, the plain fact is, he wouldn't throw it with any regularity. What I found amazing was the success ODH was able to have with his right hand, throwing it over the top in a nearly unprecedented fashion for ODH. He landed it! I really think a guy who can stand outside a bit and set-up the big right hand is going to have success whether he lands it or not. If he lands it, obviously it's effective. But even if he doesn't, the threat of it means his left-hand and body-shots can be a factor. Whoever ends up beating PBF will have to be a two-handed puncher, who's tall and who can throw the long right-hand. I really can't envision a shorter left-hooking fighter beating PBF.
The average height of Floyd's welterweight opposition has been 5'7 1/2. Worth pointing out again. I think you've possibly struck on a reason why.
Where did you get that calculation? Any idea how it compares to that of other champs' opposition at 147? Like ODH? Pacquiao? Mosley? Cotto? It'd be interesting to see if in fact PBF has faced a shorter than average supply of shorter fighters. And in this instance, it's a matter of fact and not opinion, since presumably, the heights of all of his opposition are available on boxrec.
I think N'dou fits the OP criteria and that was one of Floyd's best performances. While it's easy enough to conclude that Forrest was better than N'dou, I think it's at least arguable he wasn't, and it's very arguable that he wasn't much better than N'dou if he was better. Paul Williams is pretty much a tall, right handed puncher at welter and Floyd wanted nothing to do with him so there's another example that cuts against.
Phillip N'dou? Are you serious? Who did this guy ever beat? I think a certain standard of overall ability needs to be met before considerations of style can be addressed. I've never seen a guy get as much mileage out of a meaningless win as PBF has from his win over N'dou. Although, it reminds me of the acclaim RJJ gets for beating guys like Bryant Brannon. Who the fuck cares?
Yeah but Hearns is a stylistic nightmare for 99% of guys. If you don't have some serious pop in your punches you're pretty much fucked against Hearns.
N'dou was probably under 5'10 and tried to press a phone box fight. He was tall fora lightweight but he certainly didnt fight tall.
:: At Ndou. For starters, he's not even close to being an elite fighter, he's also about an inch taller than Floyd at most, and doesn't particularly fight tall. Double is right though, taller, rangey right hand fighters are Floyd's worst matchup, style wise, and a go a long way to neutralising speed and tricks. Floyd' ideal opponent is 5'7 with short arms, Cotto basically, or Alvarez even, which is why one of those 2 will probably be his next fight.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0yvUG3MxwI (takes 16 seconds) HBO says 5'10 1/2" and 'extremely tall for a lightweight' which is perhaps a bit of an exaggeration, but the guy still fits the OP requirements. I thought he was a tick taller and if you don't think Baloyi or Hlatschwayo were good, then you won't think N'dou was. I did, though.
Kevin Lueshing would have given Floyd problems. He'd lose cos he'd got no chin, but he was tall, angular, and had a fast, powerful right hand..David Reid gets no love either, but he could have taken Floyd clean out.
mikE you're out of your fucking mind. Ndou was nothing at elite level. He would have been as outclassed against Vernon as he was against Floyd.
Vernon is better than Ndou. Fine. I'm backing off because I can't win this argument with the Mosley fights in Vernon's resume, but I do think Ndou was a very good fighter, not elite, but very good. The OP requires an elite fighter to consider? Ndou fits what was asked. I think he fights pretty tall, but he definitely is tall. If the OP only wanted comparison to Hearns and no one else, he should have said so.
For whom are extremelly tall right handed rangey punchers with very good boxing skills and an excellent jab not an issue? Any fighter with the disadvantages Floyd would have against Hearns or Forrest (Including height, weight, lenght, strenght) would be in a shit load of trouble.
That's not the point. The point is, pbf is heralded by many as the best fighter in the world with no weaknesse ot vulnerabilities, and yet he's yet to show hr can cope with such an opponent.
its not so much that tall welterweights would be a problem for mayweather jr., its that GOOD welterweights would be a problem for him since he is not a very good welterweight. great lightweight. welter, not so much.
