Neither of those films was ever considered average at any time. They were both lauded as high-end films the moment they were released

Never watched it all the way through. Ewan MacGreggor's about as credible a council estate junky as Hugh Grant.

That's my point. It is almost sacreligious to say they aren't classics for that very reason.

I think the reason it seems like sacrilege to denounce them is because they are both so terrific

I agree. I didn't know any of the actors when I watched it, thought it was a great movie with great performances.

Donnie Darko was rather crappy to me. I found it kind of boring in addition to confusing.

very pretentious film that uses a lot of visual tools to hide weak points in the narrative

I enjoyed it and disliked it all at once

Sure, if "fencepost" is the minimum IQ level required to enjoy that movie without needing an adult to explain what's going on to you. Sorry you didn't make the cut.

Anyway, I wouldn't really classify Meet the Parents as a romantic comedy. I haven't seen it since it came out, but I don't recall there being much romance involved. The focus was on the interaction between Stiller and Deniro, not Stiller and whoever-his-gf/fiancee-was.

Didn't the Donnie Darko writer admit that the plot didn't really make sense? Fun film anyway

I saw Donnie Darko at the cinema when I was living in Paris, having no prior knowledge or expectations of the film, and I must admit I found it very enjoyable. I don't care how nonsensical it is, it's a good film, especially by American standards.

It saddens me how far the US film industry has fallen since the glory days of Night on Earth and Down by Law, and even further bac to DeNiro's heyday etc.

When I occasionally switch on the TV all I see are adverts for films like "Drillbit Taylor" and "The Sitter".

The most inane, retarded, sickening dire comedies every conceived, they seem like they were written by 4 year olds.

Here is one that I disagree with one of my co-workers once a month. "There will be Blood" just reeked...a terrible movie. It was a masturbation piece for Daniel Day Lewis. He is a fine actor and did a fine job. However, there was no story and it was long as hell. I just kept waiting for the point but it never came. It was sort of like a stand up comedy skit without the humor. It was just Daniel Day Lewis acting like an asshole from birth to death. A piece of shit.

Maybe if he was a grumpy, racist old man suffering from a terminal disease, who rescued an Asian family from various other racial stereotypes, thus learning a valuable lesson about himself and others in the process.............it would be the best movie of the last decade.

There was no redemption for Daniel Plainview, he was miserable to the end. That was the point and what sets it apart from just about every other movie ever made.

Its far from "shit", but no one will EVER convince me that No Country For Old Men is a great movie. Its simply not.
