I voted for Mayweather he is just as good defensively, has shorter harder punches and much better offense.

Correction, only an idiot would think Hatton would have had a realistic chance of winning at 140 rather than 147.

But you'd have to be a full blown retard not to think Floyd would weaken himself more than Hatton making 140.

Floyd would have to shed some muscle to make 140, which is never a good thing, look no further than Roy and Byrd for more extreme examples of that.

I don't really wanna get deep into this again, but three things quickly -

1) bringing up the Collazo fight as evidence of Hatton's ineffectiveness at 'welterweight' as it relates to this fight is misleading since Collazo was over 160 and Floyd was 148 in ring.

2) Floyd would have been a bit weaker heaving the cut the weight and rehydrate (to the exact same in-ring weight), but the same might be said for Hatton, too. He didn't actually have much advantage over Hatton due to the weight, it was just a throw back fight to welterweights being called what they are

3) regardless of the above it doesn't doesn't go anywhere to prove Floyd as a contemporary 'welterweight', because Hatton isn't one

 

the thing that's aggravating about this poll is that Floyd controls his own destiny and could've made this a no-brainer. He was surrounded by plenty of talent/big names to have done so much more.

I pick Whitaker by a shade, but Floyd's next truly great win could push him past. He might be ranked higher already. Right now I pick Whitaker, but it's hardly etched in stone that it remains that way.

 

Agreed. I don't like voting in these things until a fighter's career is over. If Floyd had clearly surpassed him by now it would be different but i don't think he has. It is debatable though.

 

I'm sorry. Where did Hatton's career take place? Where did Hatton elect to compete after the PBF fight?

Was Hatton of average or above average height? Or was Hatton short?

You know what I remember most about the mid-'90's welterweight division?

The fact that Whitaker, Trinidad and Quartey all reigned at the same time over a four-year stretch, yet somehow never managed to face each other during that time. This despite the fact that Trinidad begged for the fight and even left King to make it happen, and the fact that Whitaker and Quartey shared the same American promoter.

I don't necessarily hold Whitaker responsible (at least not solely), but it's a bit slanted to bring up Mayweather's non-fights at welterweight without also addressing Whitaker's welterweight reign as well.

 

I know it's off topic, but somewhat related, I recall ODH taking on all three of those guys: Whitaker, Quartey and Trinidad.

ODH never ran from anyone. If only there were more fighters out there like him, willing to take on everyone.

People like to hold ODH to a higher standard than any of his peers, and to dwell on his short-comings and failures as a fighter. And all the while, ignore entirely just how exceptional he was, even having competed on a consistent and ongoing basis with the very best the sport had to offer.

My guess is, when you consider the fame and fortune ODH's won, and the fact he can be proud of having ducked noone, he probably cares less than I do about the unfair criticism he received.

 

Yup, you're right on Oscar. He took a lot of flak (and deservedly so) from time he won WW title until the Quartey fight, but the truth is that when all was said and done, very few fights he left on the table, but no fights that financially made sense. I was obviously never a big fan, but always have to give him credit for that.

 

And here, ladies and gentlemen, is a sterling example of such an idiot. Someone who thinks that a guy who weighed 148 in the ring for a welterweight fight would need to cut muscle to make junior welterweight for said fight.
