If Miguel Cotto defeated Floyd Mayweather......

Where would he rank among the greatest Puerto Rican fighters of all-time?

 

Top. Floyd really is that highly thought-of, in addition to the fact that it would be seen as a damaged Cotto overcoming a super-talented, fresh, peerless fighter. He'd be way out in front, in my opinion. Who would be ahead of him? Tito? Gomez? Torres? No chance.

 

Top 3-4..if he defeated Mayweather, he would have to rematch and do it again, because Floyd groupies and apologist would not believe it unless he can do it twice. It would be like Jesus dying on the streets of jerusalem while on his way to getting crucified

 

People would say he beat a 35 year old part time boxer who was distracted by his impending jail sentence.

A argument can be made for sure, but personally it would take 1 more big win to place Miguel on the #1 spot IMO.

 

Since you are a big Cotto fan and a Mayweather hater I would take it that YOU would be one of those that wouldn't be surprised Cotto defeated Mayweather which means you must think his chances are very high.

I can't think of a single thing Cotto did better than DeJesus

I just don't see it. I think between the two, Cotto was the beneficiary of a far easier system in which to win titles and, even with a very good list of names, still fought in a far shallower era.

I can understand what you are saying and maybe a lot of people would view it the same way, but to me DeJesus was just flat out a better fighter than Miguel Cotto in every category

I'm not a Mayweather hater, I'm a Mayweather realist. His career/competition at 130-135 was excellent, but since moving up to 140-147 he has been an opportunistic whore.

Could Mayweather had gone through Margarito, Williams, Cotto, Clottey, even Cintron at 147 back in 2005-2009 without facing defeat or at least looking like shit?? Maybe....or Maybe NOT, but we will never know because he NEVER face any of those guys.

Mitchell, Bumdomir, Judah, and Hatton none of them would have a chance in hell at beating any of the guys previously mention. And don't bring up Bumdomir gift DQ W vs. Clottey. Only De La Hoya would have a chance to beat the Welterweights that Mayweather ducked. Shockingly Mayweather looked less than spectacular vs. DLH.

It might be on this website but I did post that Cotto chances vs. Mayweather today are at best 30%. SO to answer your question NO i won't be betting any money, but I will be rooting for Cotto all the way. Had they fought when both were at Welter during 2006-2009 I would have no problem betting. In the last 5-6 years Cotto has been fighting top dangerous fighters and Mayweather has been vacationing with 135'pounders, ol' ass Sugar packs, and the one mexican in boxing whose heart pump kool-ad.

Mayweather similar to Pacquiao has become methodical at choosing his next opponent carefully. Mayweather is just slightly more assure of his skills and the deterioration of his opponents skill/health.

Clottey sucks, Cintron sucks and Margarito sucks. That leaves Cotto at 147.

 

I would actually have given Cotto more credit (in retrospect) for beating Pacquiao than beating Floyd. Cotto has always had trouble with aggressive guys, whereas his ability to cut off the ring and force slick guys to fight is near uncanny.

Nevertheless, it ain't happening..
