When I was a lad I started watching WWF wrestling, then boxing, and I watch MMA from time to time. I genuinely like combat sports. However as others have mentioned - a great boxing match blows anything out of the water, especially MMA (imo). I still prefer boxing by about tenfold over UFC/MMA.

But the American public prefers MMA. Part of it is the marketing, part of it is their A.D.D. nature, part of it is the blend of different combat disciplines, and part of it is the mystique surrounding the heavyweight champion being the Baddest Man on the Planet (not the boxing heavyweight champion anymore).

It's weird. If there's a big match-up looming in MMA, it gets made. It's as simple as that. The two guys fight, one wins, and on the support of that win gets another big fight. The other guy, the guy who lost, gets back in line so to speak, and tries to build himself back up. And usually he does so because he would not have been in the spot to begin with if he weren't good.

In boxing, it's not so logical.

That's one of my favorite things about MMA. Usually the matches the fans want to see actually happen. With a few exceptions like guys who are in different weight classes. Like GSP vs Anderson Silva or Silva vs Jon Jones. They would be great fights but you can't just make a guy move to another weight class.

mma has more white guys who compete at its highest level. that has helped put the sport on the map in the US.

this is a major factor too. except in america there's plenty of examples, like basketball, where its apparent this isn't a necessary condition.

Absolutely, I should have added that part of it is also that the sport is run 100 times better for the fans.

Are you suggesting that, in order to save boxing, US customs should initiate a program that invites Mexican nationals to immigrate to the US, provide them with new 80" 3D LCD tv's, free cable programming (with HBO and PPV's) and microwaveable taquitos for life ?

I just don't know if it's fair so many of them must go without cable television.

MMA is far from perfect. To my knowledge no boxing promoter has gone low enough to charge people $60 to watch a pro wrestler fight.

It is dead in the USA. I am an American so of course I am coming from that perspective. I hate referring to myself as an American though because it is meaningless. I am a middle class , educated person of European decent. It is dying within my class.

Joe Rogan is full of it. There is no such sport as "Fighting". What is this sport of "Fighting" that he refers to??? I've never heard of it. UFC has timed its run perfectly and blends brawling with entertainment and noise, usually via somebody being choked and kicked in the head, for the "Reality TV" yobs of today, to great commercial acclaim. MMA is for people who cannot box. All that BS about how MMA is better in a street fight. BULLSHIT. Wrestling is known by the self-defense community as the "Last Resort" of fighting. Its what you do when you can't do anything else. In a street situation, the take-down is the last thing you want to do.

Fighting is what you do on the street. Men grappling in a cage is the most primitive form of fighting. It is not sport.

MMA will always suck on boxings rear teat.

I hate MMA, but workout at an MMA gym. There is skill involved. You are simplifying things to the point of absurdity. I hate MMA because looks like simulated homosexual copulation. I find it gross.

My enjoyment of the sport of MMA is definately decreasing. I used to like it because they always put on blockbuster cards with 5-10 great fights between top fighters. It has become watered down to the point where there are very few good cards, and most comprise of a intriguing main event, decent co-main, and a bunch of crap on the undercard. Usually not worth $50

Yes but for different orginzations. Unlike boxing, which a bunch of boxers all go after the same belts, In MMA, a fighter will only fight for the belt of his originzation. For example, the UFC, the fighters in the UFC fight for the UFC title and the fights are put on by the UFC.

That being said, the UFC tried many times to sign Fedor to a contract, but his demands were too much.

Its a white thing...Klitschkos invented to give boxing a better rep.

The Germans have it down. PPV HARMS SPORT

Even Boxnation were able to bring the, albeit light, undercard to viewers for free.

    Fuck PPV. Its harmful.

Boxing is its own worst enemy.

Why do you dismiss the shark faced tremor within the tantalising, bone snapping, blood clogging, oxygen deprived brain damaged potence within MMA. You've described it, atleast through the course of journalism's guilty pleasure,.. as 'soft' ...so why the racism?

I'm a little confused here.

I've been reading that the Winter Olympics, the MMA, and the Klitschkos all have something in common.

Yet, how can the MMA be growing and thriving, when it holds so much in common with Figure Skating and Happy Slaps in Cologne??

Nah it doesn't really,.. MMA isn't pale, there's a greasy fucking wop, a cheesey french cowardly bitch, two black long limbed spiders scurrying around a metal web, and some mixed to fucken high hell gypsey brazillian rat as champions.

But have you considered much,..the type of submissions, or kicks,.. the use of them in combat?..
