I find it hard to believe that there isn't more good/great fighters coming out of Europe, Asia, South/Central America the whole fucking planet. I think promotional companies need to go out and scout for TALENT, not wait for talent to fall on their laps.

The talent pool is so shallow that anybody who shows a bit of promise gets a promoter and is immediately protected.

Careful matchmaking in one form or another has always existed. However today many guys holding world "championships" are treated the same way as yesterday's prospects.

Everybody is so negative about boxing. Anything good that happens is ignored anything that sucks is highlighted. People say all boxing has is Floyd and Manny but these guys are huge, 2 of the biggest stars ever. Both guys get 1 million buys every fight. I remember some UFC shill of a writer saying after Oscar retires boxing will never do 1M buys on PPV. Boxing will always have stars and always will have a huge worldwide audience. Haters gonna hate and crybabies are gonna cry.

 

Boxing is not dying, the heavyweight division is DEAD.

Vitali vs Chisora, Banks vs Firtha, Arreola vs Molina and Huck vs Povetkin were all held in the last two weeks and apart from Banks vs Firtha, they were all very decent fare.

Show me one other division that had 4 fights at that level in the same short time-frame ???

Two of the Ring Magazine top 10 pfp are heavyweights- same as when Lewis and Holyfield went at it. In fact after the draw in MSG- Ring dropped Holyfield from the rankings.

Helenius vs Chisora was a decent fight also.

Thats 5 fights in the space of 5 weeks.

Pretty decent level of activity.

Of course only one of them took place in the USA. :wack:

Is Arreola any worse of a heavyweight in the historiacall sense than Alexander was as a Light-Welter or Welter?

I'd reckon Arreola does no worse vs Joe Frazier or Sonny Liston than Alexander does vs Ray Robinson or Hearns.

Obviously "Dying" is a bit of hyperbole, or just the wwrong choice of words. The sentiment is that boxing is declining. And I'm sorry but your list of fights only proves that to be true, imo.

Floyd v Cotto and Pac v Bradley are excellent fights if not for the fact that is a a HUGE HUGE HUGE HUEG disappointment to what almost EVERY fan (and every casual observer) wants to see.

Super middleweight division has been excellent. Donaire, Gamboa, Martinez and Broner are bright spots.

Chavez Jr, as someone else mentioned, should never be mentioned except for proof of boxing's decline. Alvarez is pretty good.

It'll take a bit, but try and look up what fights were on the horizon 5, 10 & 15 years ago around this time and compare them to the fights you listed.... I feel like there would be a major difference.

 

Do you still think that Golota proved he was just as good as all the heavyweights in the 1980's because of his fight in 1998 with Tim Witherspoon?

Or that Witherspoon is proof that the 1980's heavies were overrated because he lost to Lou Savarese in 2002?

As boxing fans we might be a little too critical and spoiled.

For my money, there is absolutely nothing wrong with boxing's upcoming schedule. In fact, the Cinco De Mayo card is better than good in my opinion.

Sure the talent level could be better and the HW division could stand an injection of Ali or Tyson. And despite having my pet peeves and long list of things I'd like to see change in boxing, overall my personal interest has probably improved recently.

I've got Reed to blame for that. The dude called me on the carpet for being a shitty fan and being too critical. He was dead-on.

 

Chavez Jr. is Quite Possibly THE Most PROTECTED Fighter of All Times, but he's also MARKETABLE...That's GOOD for the Sport...
