MANILA, Philippines -- Philippine tax officials have filed a criminal complaint against boxing champion and lawmaker Manny Pacquiao for failure to submit documents to investigators looking into his tax returns.

Prosecutors will now decide if there is enough evidence to bring the case to court, where Pacquiao could face up to two years in jail if convicted.

Bureau of Internal Revenue regional director Rozil Lozares says a complaint was filed March 1 after Pacquiao failed to submit the documents despite three notices and a subpoena.

He said Thursday that Pacquiao's 2010 tax return contained "discrepancies" considering his many businesses and endorsements.

Pacquiao was ranked by Forbes magazine last year as the world's 24th richest athlete.

Calls to Pacquiao's office went unanswered.

They should lock Manny and Floyd up and have them fight each other for free in jail.

It's rare fighters DON'T end up broke and/or with tax issues. They're simply proving their greatness.

Fair point, I guess it's to be expected, it's simply the norm in boxing

Manny doesn't seem like the smartest dude. This isn't surprising. I'm sure he's going to just pay what ever it is off, he's not doing any jail time.

There's really no surprise here. Manny has had tax issues in the U.S. Not surprised he has them at home as well.

    I've said this many times...

Manny will go broke but will have gotten there by funding schools, buying equipment and feeding the hungry in his country.

Floyd will go broke due to gambling, burning money and carrying the Las Vegas stripper community on his back.

    Different course, same destination.

Apparently the government wouldn't take a 50/50 split either.

A fighter has to be decisively beaten to be a "leftover."

The amount of exposure manny has given that country, they should leave him alone.

I would say that the amount of money he's made from that country and by being associated with it would make it unseemly for him to not contribute his fair share to society. Aside from that, he's a national icon as well as a member of the government. Tax evasion doesn't set a very good example.

I was kind of joking with my statement, but do you think he made money being associated with the Philipines?

its one thing for some lowlife, degenerate gambler who's facing a prison bid to have tax issues. when the most famous and popular person in an entire nation (a congressional official to boot) is cheating the tax man it should cause quite an uproar.

kinda like, would anyone here be shocked if caligula was audited or owed back child support to some toothless harlot? now if one of the more well loved, upstanding fightbeat members like Black market Baby, Lok or Pete o'file had similar issues then it would surely cause more of a stir.
