(translated from EL NUEVO DIA): Juan Manuel Marquez witness first hand the ring genius of Floyd Mayweather Jr. when the last one bullied him on September 19, 2009 at the MGM Grand Arena in las Vegas,Nevada. The current lightweight champion gave an advise to the boricua champ Miguel Angel Cotto who will face Mayweather at that same site on May 05 of this year. "Cotto has to put pressure on Mayweather" said Marquez prior to the official weight in of Salido-Lopez II at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum. "Put pressure, throw combinations and wait for Mayweather's response who is a very good counterpuncher and is also a very good defensive boxer." In Marquez opinion,"the most difficult that Mayweather has is to hit him. He has a great defense: with shoulders and elbows covers himself and it is very difficult (to land punches). Defensively speaking is the best. Uses his tricks, but is not dirty". In Marquez opinion Cotto will give problems to the american. "Is a difficult fight for both. Now Mayweather will be fighting at a higher weight" said Marquez. "If Mayweather risks a little, like other boxers do, it will be a great fight. He needs to risk a little more so that his fights be a little more entertaining. But if he does it, it will give an advantage to Cotto, who is a great fighter." Marquez was in Puerto Rico to watch the Salido vs Lopez II fight and for an homage that he and his fellow countryman Jorge 'El Travieso' Arce recibed from the World Boxing Organization in San Juan.
Yes, and Lennox advised Corrie on Vitali. Because thats how much difference this one is going to make. :: Gotta love the Latins looking after each other though. Floyd won't be happy.
Unless Ross Kemp is rummaging around the region with his pale frog bobble-head, and waving his finger at his own cheap sensationalism. Then how the fuck, can I possibly believe it?. :dunno:
Cotto needs to study the Frazier/Ali fight. Cotto's only chance is to apply serious pressure. Before I thought Cotto needed box Floyd but understood that was a big mistake.
IMO Ortiz was doing the right thing by trying to fight rough, corner him on the ropes and not let Floyd think with constant agression.Of course he blew it with the ilegal headbutt and later with the "I'm-so-sorry-you-can-KO-me-now' act. Cotto needs to do something like this, but Cotto is not like that,so he will try to outbox the master boxer. Floyd KOs Cotto within seven rounds.
I'm warming to the chances of Cotto making a fight of it. He does some nice things to disguise his punches, which he might get some mileage out of, especially if he brings an overhand right behind it.....that stutter step he feints with on the way in is nice.
Absolutely. I think you really underrate Cotto. He's a very solid, "smooth", boxer puncher. Great all rounder, with a good amount of skill. Sure he doesn't integrate offense and defense simultaneously very well, but how many fighters do? Personally I think he's just too patient to be particularly competitive with Floyd though, he'll give Floyd room to work and time to think, and get pot shotted and countered. Not only that but he's at a height and reach deficit, which Floyd loves. He won't get embarrassed though, he'll do better than Gay Marquez put it that way.
Cotto is going to get clowned. He is a sub elite fighter. He has below average speed, power and chin. He is fragile. The only debate in this fight is if Floyd stops him or batters him 12-0.
Cotto has that great resume. This is a good fight. Shame on anyone who thinks Floyd could and should have made this sooner. Shame.
Cotto has shit stamina, he can't apply pressure like JL Castillo, he'll be dead by the fifth round. Shit, he don't know how to cut the ring properly. Cotto is more effective while fighting backwards, and Floyd will not follow him around. Why can't people accept that Floyd will have no problem beating him?
Nah, Cotto has been a mid range elite fighter since forever. His speed and power are average at world level, and his chin is probably average too. So is his stamina :: Doesn't exactly make him sound great, but he makes up for his lack of extreme talent by overall skill. I predict Cotto wins 2 or 3 rounds, and it goes to a decision. A Floyd stoppage is possible if Cotto gasses I guess.
Hello? are we talking about the same Cotto that two fights ago was being written-off with the motto of 'over-the-hill', 'damaged' and other nice things? did his victory over a damaged and without loaded wraps Margarito suddendly elevated him to a prime status?
I agree with those giving Cotto no chance in this one. I'll be surprised if he's even remotely competitive
Even though you are one of the better posters on this board, I have to agree to disagree. Pac beat Cotto like a disobedient Saudi Woman. Cotto was competitive for 90 seconds.
Don't get me wrong, I give Cotto no realistic chance of winning. Not only does he not have the style to trouble Floyd, but Floyd is just a much better fighter. Maybe I'm a bit biased as I've always been a fan of Cotto, since he was a novice, but I do think he's underrated. Ike and Slice, surely you seem him doing better than Marquez?
Better really isn't better. He may win 3 rounds and lose 9. Hell, if he won 2 he would do better than Mariconquez. I think that would be a misuse of the word better. I went from hating Cotto, to liking and respecting Cotto. I think he is overrated as a fighter. I thought he at best drew with a shot Mosely and he did get brutalized by a bum like Margarito. Handwraps or not, Paul Williams beat him and so did Daniel Santos with his plaster. Cotto was nearly killed.
Not really to be honest. He might just about shade the first round or something if Floyd starts slow but I see a one-sided shut out beating, possibly a late stoppage.
My point still stands.Cotto was competitive for 4 rounds although he was dropped twice.ONCE PAC HURT HIM AT THE END OF THE 4TH, Cotto was beaten like a disobedient Saudi woman. He showed no resistance from the fifth until the end and honestly the bout was stopped 2-3 rounds too late
I doubt Cotto gets stopped. I see a similar fight to Mayweather-Marquez, with Cotto being more competitive. Mayweather UD
What's the deal with this "Risk" shit? The guy does what he has to do to win a fight and a lot of times, he still looks brilliant while doing it his way! These other clowns think you have to come in face first like Rocky Balboa to be a great champ or fighter. All of these fighters have the same strategy before going in against Floyd, yet, no one has come out of the other side successful! Cotto is tough. Cotto is strong. Cotto gets hit. This is another opportunity at a great fight for Floyd. He'll end the fight walking Cotto down. Guess what? No one is going to give him respect for that either.
