The way to beat Barca is the way Chelsea played them in the semi-final a couple of years ago: total organisation, endless graft and quick breaks. Chelsea were robbed in that CL semi-final in that they should have had about three penalties and got done by a last minute winner but they were the better side throughout (not that I was complaining as I hate Chelski)

I agree they were robbed, although it was hilarious . Wasn't the only shot on target Barca had that night the last minute Iniesta shot which went in? However, you don't think Barca have pushed on since then? I'm not sure that's the best way to do it now. I think Arsenal, funnily enough, had the right blueprint, and if they weren't so utterly shit away from home they might have done something. It's funny though, that semi final against Chelsea was pivotal in getting Barcelona where they are now, if Iniesta doesn't pull that out of the bag, would they be dominating football right now?

apart from one or two players I dont know much about the Liverpool reserves... however if first division players in England are stars in the Scottish league it would be fair to say that the reserve players for the top EPL teams would do well up North..

Gary Hooper - 2nd top scorer in the Championship behind Andy Caroll when we signed him, aged 22. That's in a team which narrowly missed relegation, not a Newcastle team storming to top spot.

Joe Ledley - POTY in a Cardiff team who had missed out on the Prem by one game. Aged 22.

Adam Matthews - snapped up from Cardiff aged 18, already a first team regular in a team going for promotion.

Along with guys like Kayal (21, when signed), Izziguire (23) & Wanyama (19) these are simply premiership class players. Scouting masterstrokes, actually. It's just not the case that any old Championship level workhorse can be a 'star' at Celtic Park.

Ditto underdeveloped kids who've never seen a single first team run out for Liverpool. Again, send them to Motherwell, ta.

The three guys I named are very very promising. I wasn't suggesting some SPL < EPL sort of thing, merely that it would be beneficial to Celtic to enter into an arrangement with other clubs whereby they had the use of their youth players. It would put Celtic out in front of Rangers permanently. Teams would loan players to Celtic on the understanding that Celtic would always be in the Champions League, the loanees would get ECL time, and their price would rise in event that they were sold on in due course by the lender-club.

I really hope we meet Liverpool in Europe next year again, now. I'll be digging up this thread after the tie.

Shelvey has played and is not under-developed. He was one of the guys I mentioned. He would thrive in Scotland at Celtic. Raheem Sterling will make his pro debut at Senior Level next season at the latest- I am sure. He already traveled with the team in the Europa League last season to the Czech Republic.

I didn't say that Michael N'Goo would grab 50 league goals in his debut season in Scotland

I think you overestimate how good these kids are at that age. The aren't CL class - otherwise they'd be getting the odd run out at Anfield

They are CL class if you've got nobody else, that was the point. Neil Mellor was shit and fat and blonde and he scored against Olympiakos in that game. I think he barely got another game in Europe all that season. That was my point. Talented but unproven kids who are desperate for game time and who won't cost Celtic a penny in wages. Sure who would turn that down?

I guess once they were at the stage where they were on the periphery of the first team at Anfield they might be useful. We made a similar deal with Barca for Marc Crosas, who was on the periphery of playing but couldn't quite break through. He never really did here either, unfortunately.

But by that stage, if a player is good enough clubs usually want him around anyway (Barca didnt consider Crosas quite good enough). You'd be better sending them to Hibs or Preston NE to get the games before that point

Im not specifically talking about Liverpool - hooper was a scunthorpe player? Stokes couldnt get a game at Sunderland..Maloney was a flop in the EPL.. you say scouting master stroke I say the EPL is not interested..

The real talent in that league is difficult to pick up at 2/3 million just ask Arsenal..

In any event I was discussing a club like Celtic getting a volume of fresh, inexpensive talent that would give them the bodies to compete on all fronts, all Season.

Kenny Miller is another guy who failed to make the grade at EPL level.

Miller scored goals at Celtic and Rangers. He scored how many in the Premier League or the Turkish Superliga??

I'm just saying. Neither me nor TKO have an axe to grind with Celtic, not us, of all the people.

Yup quality is rare for that money, period. As our signing record for the 10 years prior to lennon arriving attests to. when we've been pish in the past I've said it plainly - in fact I'd said it every year to one degree or another from joining this board in 05 until about 12 months ago. But when we're good I'll say it just as plainly - the average age of this team is 22 and it'd do fine in the premiership already (as in comfortably above the relegation zone). It held it's own fine against teams from other big leagues this years and we were in absolute crisis mode with injuries and form at the time.

When we turn over good teams in europe next year I hope you'll remember this conversation and admit you were wrong.

(Re: Maloney he had one great season here as a very young player and was ruined by hamstring injuries. In his second spell he didn't make the team any more than he did at Villa. Stokes was 20 years old at Sunderland)

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/feb/03/manchester-united-fan-racist-abuse-stoke

A Manchester United fan has been charged for shouting racist abuse at opposition players during a Premier League football match.

Howard Hobson, 57, is accused of a racially aggravated public order offence and using threatening words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

Hobson, of Weaver Walk, Openshaw, Manchester, was arrested at the Manchester United v Stoke City game on Tuesday.

During the match a spectator made a complaint to stewards that a fan in the north stand was shouting abusive comments towards Stoke City players. Police were informed and Hobson was arrested.

He is due to appear at Trafford magistrates court on Wednesday.

    Liverpool fan cleared......

Mate, I can only assume that you are on some kind of wind-up here. You are effectively suggesting that Celtic Football Club become some sort of training ground for Liverpool's reserves/youngsters.

I have no idea where he found five minutes at the end, yet I said to the missus with ten minutes to go that he would. He would have played an extra half a fucking hour if that's how long it took for you to score a winner. Corrupt fucking shit-house. Van Persie bought that stoppage time by getting the crowd to boo every time Krul touched the ball, creating an illusion that he was wasting time when he wasn't. Cheating Dutch cunt; I hope Krul fucking sparks him clean out when the Dutch national team meet next.
