I did not have a chance to see this fight until yesterday (Martinez/Macklin), but wanted to make one comment about it before it is completely forgotten.

I have never been a fan of Andre Ward, and have even been criticized for questioning his skill level. Watching Martinez fight, no matter whether you are a fan of his style or not, exemplifies my criticism of fighters like Ward.

Martinez is a complete fighter. He has deficiencies, yes, but there is no aspect of the game he cannot perform adeptly. He doesn't run, and in fact KO's his opponents often. He does commit to his punches, but yet he also throws fast combinations. He has a decent jab. He ducks, has great footwork, knows how to turn his opponent, knows how to block punches, move his head. He does NOT hold. He does NOT ram his head in against his opponent. He does not PUSH.

Andre Ward has offensive skills, but is a remarkably and frankly embarrassingly INCOMPLETE fighter. Ward cannot deal with virtually any style without excessively holding, headbutting, grappling. In fact, in the modern day and age where fights like Khan/Peterson are looked at as bizarre oddities where a ref dares to penalize a fighter for holding - it has become possible to COMPLETE an imbalance of skill by purposefully holding in "strategic" ways. Purposely leaning in with your head. Purposely grappling to halt the action, stop your opponents punches, or set up your own.

That is my criticism of fighters like Ward, and even Wlad Klitschko to a great degree. They simply are unable to defend themselves properly in a boxing ring, period. They are extraordinarily deficient and could not compete at the world level without constant holding. This sort of "technique" allows a gifted OFFENSIVE fighter to become a WINNING fighter, where historically I find it very, very unlikely they would be able to do that.

I find this unfair to fighter like Martinez, who sheerly by skill and athletic ability (and ring smarts) can deal with just about any style without the need to hold. He evades & counters, and no matter how much pressure is put on him, he still comes out the better fighter. As much as I dislike Floyd, he also has this ability. It doesn't matter how hard or fast you come at Jr., he is a complete fighter, and integrates defense with offense such that he does not need to hold.

Does anyone believe that if Andre Ward was not allowed to hold at all, or lead with that thick skull, that he would be able to do what he does now? Can you even imagine Ward in a fight where he actually has to keep moving and punching all night, without being able to grab on every single time he is done throwing a punch? There is no doubt in my mind he would tire, get sloppy, and get KO'd. He would be completely out of his element without the ability to control the pace and flow of the fight with holding.

B hops and John Ruiz may well have brought this "strategy" into the modern era, but its torch is being carried on quite nicely by a good chunk of today's crop of fighters.
