I hate how Julian Jackson was buried in Don King's stable at the wrong time. He came along when King had Tyson and Chavez. If you mention Jackson's name to anyone who's not a mainstream boxing fan, they will not even be able to tell you anything about him. Considering his knockout power, especially at 154, he should be known world wide. More people know Terry Norris than Jackson. We know what happened there! I know this should be in MM, but I would have like to have seen Jackson against Winky Wright, Fernando Vargas, Ike Quartey and Shane Mosely at 154! I would not mind seeing Jackson against James Toney at 160. James would flat out outclass him, but Toney will have to get hit sooner or later. I just want to see how he reacts to perhaps the hardest p4p puncher in the history of the game.
I wonder if Norris always had a less-than-sturdy chin or if it was just completely ruined by those two flush Jackson shots.
I caught him a couple of times in person, adn he hit Thomas Tate with everything and the kitchen sink at the LV Hilton and couldn't stop him. Won a bundle on Quincy Taylor over him, but I really liked Julian a lot, and won big on him vs. Norris.
Jackson/Wright is an interesting match. I'd pick JJ to beat the others you named at 154, and I think Toney'd be able to take his best shots and stop him at 160.
Don King buried him because he was blind in one eye. So Jackson had to take scraps or get exposed and banned. He was a better fighter than TERESA nORRIS.
i watch his greatest KOs on youtube every week. Underrated JJ KO i sthe one over Wayne Powell, it was the fight before Graham, and it was also a 4th round KO with a right hand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YIfzWl1i10 Check out the replay that starts at 3:40, jeez.
I like Mike Tyson's greatest ko's. Here's some of Jackson's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kyi57mKkVs&feature=related
Funny, but I was 21 years old and got to watch McCallum-Jackson live in Miami. To this day it is probably my all-time favorite 'Live' boxing moment. Combined these dudes were something like 55 and 0 with 50 knockouts. The atmosphere was unreal. It was a 'real' boxing environment and unlike anything I've been to since. At 154, Jackson's power was second to NO one including Tommy Hearns. His shots sounded hard and you could tell he was basically getting every ounce and inch of his body into every shot. In the McCallum fight, the problem was the way McCallum was narrowly avoiding Jackson's winging shots and always able to stay on balance and close to Jackson in order to return fire. It was THE fight that made me a fan of McCallum. It was the sweet science over raw, devastating power. Oddly, when watching it live, I thought it was a clearly justified stoppage, but when watching replays, it isn't so clear. I think McCallum would have ended it eventually but I would love to have seen it continue and even a rematch down the road with a more mature Jackson would have been cool. Great era for Jr. Middles.
Toney didn't kill too many fighters, even in his prime. Did he kill any with Jackson's credentials? Can't think of any. Perhaps you are thinking of one of his invariable pre-fight rants where he said he was going to kick ass on his way to a decision?
Tony stopped the HUGE Nunn who was 10x more talented than Jackson. He also evicerated Barkley among others. Toney proved the strength of his chin all the way up to heavyweight. This is a mismatch.
I think Jackson would have smashed Nunn. Toney would have won a decision over him, I agree with mikE.
Nunn would have beaten the shit outta Jackson, and theres no way in hell Jackson is lasting the distance with Toney. Jackson was a BEAST at 154, and theres not too many junior middles in history that beat him IMO. At 160, it was a different story.
Reggie Johnson, who hit about as hard as you do, knocked Toney on his ass and hurt him, probably deserved the decision too
Toney gets more passes than anyone in history. He looked like shit in probably 10 fights, THE Tiberi fight being the cherry on top. I am a TONEY fan too.
Toney was hurt, but not that bad. He took Johnson lightly, got careless, and got hit with a hard shot right on the button.. and got back up right away. I doubt he'd be so careless against Jackson. McCallum was a far superior fighter and hit far harder than Reggie Johnson, and he never hurt Toney.
Reggie Johnson had underrated power. Don't try to make it seem like he was a feather fist. He buzzed Steve Collins several times in their fight.
He did have a detached retina in the Herol Graham fight, but that was after being hit by a line drive while playing baseball in the Virgin Islands. I thought he had corrective surgery. The only time the eye thing became an issue is when he considered not re-signing with King from what I recall.
I agree McCallum was far superior, but I disagree about the power. At 160, McCallum was hardly the banger he'd been at 154. He had to hit guys A LOT to hurt them The bottom line is that Toney could be hurt, he just didn't get hit cleanly very often because he was so excellent defensively... not saying he didn't have a good chin, because he did, but we are talking about Julian Jackson here... the idea that Toney's beard is so strong that Julian Jackson has no chance of hurting him is preposterous. This isn't Marvin Hagler we are talking about, Toney's chin wasn't like THAT
I definitely agree Jackson was capable of hurting Toney if he landed clean, I just think Toney would be on his A game for that fight and would go out of his way to make sure it didn't happen. Jackson would have a very slim puncher's chance, that's about it.
