Spinks didn't dive. He just quit. I despise the cunt, not because he quit, or was afraid, or was hurt, thats perfectly normal, its because of the comments he made afterwards.

 They're very similar. Dive is when you get paid off to fall. Spinks didn't get paid to fall, he decided do that all by himself...and for a very nice purse which apparently was enough for him to live on seeing that he retired that same night.

Spinks got paid $15m, made up some BS about how he was just a black man in white mans world, then quit for the second time in the same night. Easily the stupidest boxing family in history, The Spinks.

It is definitely part of the strategy, but you actually have to be good and tough enough to take the early going... PRECIOUS FEW could

There are literally only a small handful of guys I'd pick to do it

Probably. Then again, many boxers never even gave themselves the chance to actually try. They were scared of him. Tyson was a master intimidator.
Buster Douglas showed what you can do when you're not sh*tting bricks.
It's not just apparent in boxing. It happens in all sports. Look at MMA for example. The Tyson-equivalent Fedor Emelianenko got ass f*cked several times now because the aura is gone. Same with CroCop.

No experienced pro is "scared" of anybody. It's a case of believing they can't win. It is mentality, but not fear.

    Hagler/Leonard

I remember the hype leading up until the fight. I could not watch the fight because it was on closed circuit. All night long I was trying to find out the results. Remember, there wasn't any sports radio at the time; only ESPN, and most of us in NYC could not get cable, outside of HBO back then.

I stayed up late enough hoping that Warner Wolfe, the CBS sports anchor would give some type of insight, but his report at about 11:25pm was only 8:25 pacific time! Anyway, I kept getting out of the bed all night trying to get an update on one of the 900 numbers, 1-900-976-1313..... That is the exact number for the sports phone back then. There was a premium charge. I called all night but could not get anything definitive. I ended up dozing off for about an hour and a half, when I woke up, I realized the fight may have been over; I snuck to the phone and called..... As soon as the recording said, "Sugar Ray Leonard achieved what was believed to be the impossible", I hung up., then immediately called it back as if they had made a mistake! It felt like a gut punch. I was really rooting for Hagler.

Oh yeah, by the way, I had a fight of my own a month later --- My parents getting the phone bill and seeing all of the premium charges!!! It was worth it!

It's the same thing whisky. Not wanting to fight a specific person because you believe you can't win is the same thing as being scared. LOL! Pros are people trying to make the most amount of money possible with the least amount of risk. Use your logic and apply it to Fraud F*ckweather not wanting anything to do with Manny Pacquiao.

Not even Hogan/Andre The Giant? or Mr. T/Roddy Piper in a boxing match fresh off of Rocky III and The A Team? How 'bout the William "The Refrigerator" Perry in a wrestlemania battle royal?
