Saturday, April 14th was the Scheduled Date for the HIGHLY Anticipated Matchup btwn Brandon Rios & Yuriorkis Gamboa....One of the More INTRIGUING Bouts in Recent Memory, to B Clear... For MONTHS, the Boxing Community Salivated @ the Notion AND Thought Looooooong/Hard Enough to Devise Scenarios where BOTH Guys Could Win...Then, Out of Nowhere, Gamboa Acted as if the Contest was a SURPRISE to him & Eventually Reneged on the Original Agreement... @ the End of the Day, it's SOLELY Gamboa's Fault that the Fight Isn't Coming to Fruition, so FUCK him...If Anybody Else Agree's, Let it Be Known HERE OR, Make your Case for WHY Gamboa was Justified in CHEATING the Boxing Public... If you CAN... REED:warning:
A boxer only has one obligation- to himself. He looks after himself. I am as disappointed as anyone, and while I feel Gamboa has let the fans down and made a career mistake- who knows. It may yet turn out in his favour, and thats why he is in this business. To look after himself. Promoters, Referees, Managers, Agents......have all nixed, delayed, or rendered totally impossible a lot of very big fights down the years. I'd sooner blame them. Who told Terry Norris to fight Keith Mullings and deprive us of the potential of Oscar vs Norris? Who nixed Norris vs Chavez? Why did Steve Collins retire just before he was supposed to fight Calzaghe, and then come out of retirement sniffing for a Roy Jones fight?? Its hard to get too upset. Rios is an annoyance in any case. If Gamboa sits at home and gets fat then fine, fuck Gamboa. But if he rearranges his career and comes out on top and makes big fights then...:bears: Time will tell.
Despite my being not happy with this fight not happening, it could prove to be a good move on Gamboa's behalf. We'll find out of course.
I can't help but think his career will end up like Guzman's. Thing is, expectations have to be low for a guy in his position. It's not like he's making millions, commanding $60 prices, or being annointed as top p4p. Recall that most thought a Rios fight would've been ill-advised. And even those who didn't were surprised Gamboa would've taken such a risky fight.
The PROBLEM REED has w/Gamboa is his TIMING... As Doub has Pointed Out, YES, it was a VERY Risky Proposition for Gamboa; a 50/50 Fight @ BEST, for him...But The Reward for Winning (or even Competing w/Rios) would've Been a 1-Way Ticket to Boxing STARDOM... It's Fine to Bypass the Fight, but Gamboa Waits Until Anticipation has Been BUILT for SEVERAL Months???...He Waits Until 3-4 Weeks from Fightnight to Pull Out???...If Dude NEVER Wanted the Fight, he KNEW this Shit MONTHS AGO...Instead, he TEASES Boxing Fans, THEN Tries to Strong Arm the Promotion &/or the Network for MORE Money???... Fuck That... Sure, Gamboa WILL Recover from this & his Talent WARRANTS a 2nd Chance @ a BIG Fight...But REED can't Help but Think of How THIS COMING WEEKEND is Fucked Up by 1 Individual w/a SHITTY Sense of Timing... REED:shadow:
I'm in dude, I used to be a Gamboa fan, but now no fucking way. As REED aluded to, it's not NOT fighting Rios that's the problem, it's basically agreeing to the fight, getting everyone's hopes up, then fucking everyone around and pulling out like a bitch. Personally I would have had no problem at all if Gamboa never fought Rios or even talked about fighting Rios. I said long ago that it was a stupid fight for Gamboa, he's clearly better, but Rios is just too big and strong. But if you say you're going to fucking fight, you fight. Didn't he even sign a contract? They'd even started promoting the fight and selling tickets ffs. As a boxing fan, you can't be a fan of a guy like that, and as a TV network, you can't trust a guy like that.
I stop short of assigning 100% blame on Gamboa only because promoters have pulled this before, particularly Top Rank. There seems to be language lost in "fighters agreeing to terms" and "fighters' camps agreeing to terms." Too many fighters allow others to speak on their behalf, which at times leads to camp members speaking out of turn. Everyone's claiming Chavez Jr.-Lee is a done deal when in fact neither fighter has even yet seen terms listed in a contract. Arum & DiBella are both claiming the fight's done and the winner gets Martinez. Even Todd duBoef admitted he knows little to nothing about that being part of the deal. Meanwhile, Chavez Jr's side has yet to receive assurances that the fight won't automatically extend their contract w/ Top Rank and Lee is still waiting on his contract. As for this fight - the Miami presser just seemed way too convenient for my liking. Gamboa no-shows, Abril comes out of nowhere and one slap later is the B-side of a $45 PPV headliner. I'm not condoning Gamboa's actions in any of this, particularly his blowing off a meeting w/ Top Rank to help reconcile. But it stands to reason there was miscommunication between Gamboa and Ahmet Oner.
Did Gamboa ever agree to the fight, even in principle? I thought his point was that he'd never even seen a contract.
Seriously. To Jake's point, promoters make shit up all the time to get publicity to promote the shit they actually do show. It's not unlike pac and pbf using the possibility of a match with one another to promote the fights they actually make, with no intention at all of ever making the fight. What bettrr way to promote May 5th than with the possibility it's against pacquiao.
I think this will affect Gamboa more than he thinks. God knows when he will go back in the ring after spending time in courts. on the flip side I think a Rios/Marquez possibly in July is a better fight personally. I also don't mind watching both these guys in a double header this coming Saturday.
Every promoter "likes" to make mismatches. It seems like good fights are made only when networks force a promoter's hand.
It should be no surprise to hbo when promoters' focus is on maintaining undefeated (overrated) stars, ehen that's exactly hbo's value proposition (building stars). When hbo decides to be in the boxing business again, promoters will follow suit. There can be no separation of blame between networks and promoters. Hbo votes with its wallet, and continues to vote for stars.
If gamboa accepted the $40,000 advance as reported (assuming that's true) what did he think the money was for? If he has no problem accepting upfront money, seems logical to think he knew what was planned. Especially considering the press conference was in Miami at the request of gamboa. It's difficult for me to believe it was that far down the line and Gamboa had no clue what was discussed or in the works. This case doesn't seem to be similar to the Amir Khan-Tim Bradley situation where Bradley signed nothing and took nothing. There were no reasonable signs he was on board with the fight no matter what Shaw and Thompson said.
Did Gamboa's trainers forget to tell him he was supposed to be training for a fight next week? :scratcher:
I thought it was similar to Khan/Bradley, but perhaps not. I did find a link to boxingscene where the Top Rank lawsuit against Gamboa was discusssed and in it Top Rank claims $70,000 was advanced to Gamboa.
It's customary for promoters to advance fighters money for training camp expenses then deduct what's owed from their purse on fight night. Again, if this is true... What did Gamboa think the money was for? It also seems apparent Manny Steward thought the fight was on. He said he went to Florida as well. How is it possible everyone knew but Gamboa? I'm sure it comes down to Gamboa, like Bradley, wasn't happy with his cut. Not the purse, his cut of the purse. As far as I'm concerned, if he did accept the $70,000 it's game set and match. He's in the wrong there. As soon as he accepted the payment it can be easily argued he was in agreement with the fight...from a legal point of view. That is why I believe the Bradley-Khan situation is completely different. To speak to Jake's point, I'm sure Top Rank knew he was upset and had a backup plan just in case...and they should have if there was any inkling Gamboa would do this.
Agreed, I was never under the impression Bradley vs Khan was on, it's not like they were selling tickets or promoting the fight was it? Plus Bradley didn't sign a contract or receive an advance of his purse.
How can a Roy fan ever hate a guy for ducking another guy? I am disappointed, but the midget ran his mouth and thought better of it and took the coward's way out. It is no more cowardly than Roy Jones behavior in his prime or Floyd's path since he moved up past lightweight. Gamboa's crime was he had no subtlety to it. He ran his mouth and then thought shit, I better get paid. Gamboa really backed himself into a corner whereas Roy and Floyd use their tiny brains to manipulate their "fans" by making ridiculous demands like changing the rules of commissions as a pre-condition for a fight or in Roy's case basically sticking his unlubricated penis directly into the asses of the HBO brass by reminding them that he got paid the same money to fight a postman or Jirov. Watch the fight with Daniel Ponce Deleon. Rios, as primitive and scrubish as he is, would beat the shit out of that midget. HE IS WAY BIGGER. Still, I will join the bandwagon. Fuck Roy, Floyd and Gamboa, different sizes same behavior.
SHITS & GIGGLES Strikes Again!!!... The Problem w/Your "Argument" is this was Gamboa's Chance @ Replicating Roy-Ruiz....You Remember that Fight, Right???...The 1 that YOU SWORE Roy would NEVER Take???..."I'll Believe it when I See Roy in the Ring"...Wasn't THAT your Bold Declaration???... Didn't LAMEus Maximus even "Speak" to You about Roy Backing Out of the Fight???... Not Really Sure WHAT Roy Jones had to Do w/this, but your Comparison FAILED MISERABLY, as Do 99.99% of your Attempts @ Serious Boxing Debate...Of Course, U'll Chalk it Up to Diarrhea, Constipation, PMS or Whatever Other Issue there is w/your Lower Back These Days... Bottom Line, Go Pop a Pill, SHUTthefuckUP & Leave Legitimate Boxing Debate to Those in the KNOW... REED:cheer:
I joined your bandwagon.Fuck Gamboa. Anytime you use Ruiz as "proof" of valor means I win:giggle::giggle:You also left out the part when I said IF Roy took the fight, he'd beat the piss out of Ruiz because Ruiz sucked.Even then, had rUIZ ASKED FOR say a 90/10 split, Roymost likely would have Gamboa'd.The fact that Ruiz is a bigger, greaser, dumber fighter and took no guaranteed money is why that fight took place. As always, I am about to have my morning constitutional and then will shit out more boxing knowledge than you will have ever known. Speaking of shutting the fuck up: I have two words for you. VASSILY JIROV
Just Because Ruiz's Style was an Eye Sore DOESN'T Diminish his EFFECTIVENESS as a Fighter...Tabulate his SUCCESSFUL Heavyweight Title Defenses, then Get Back to REED... Ruiz had ZERO Leverage to Negotiate w/Roy Jones...Nonetheless, it's Still THE BIGGEST Fight of Ruiz's Career... & NO, U Never EVER Said Shit about Roy Beating Ruiz...U WOULDN'T Even Entertain the Idea of Roy TAKING the Fight, so U're Straight Up LYING, Like the Chicken Shit, Perpetually Pain Riddled COWARD that U R...U NEVER Said Roy would BEAT Ruiz...U REPEATEDLY Said "Roy will NEVER Take the Fight"...& Even After Roy Signed AND Showed Up to the Press Conference, U Said, "I'll Believe it when Roy is IN the Ring"...So Fuck Off w/your LIES, Dude... REED has Called U Out NUMEROUS Times to Debate the Boxing Topic of YOUR Choosing & U've WUSSEDthefuckOUT Every Single Time...Here's 2 Fightbeat Certainties: 1. You Own Jaws (Who's a WILLING Sack Slurper of yours)... 2. REED Owns YOU... Start a LEGITIMATE Boxing Topic & PROVE Otherwise, Homegirl... If U FAIL to Comply (for the 1,00th Time), You've Been EXPOSED as the Boxing IMPOTENT Court Jester that REED has Pegged U as Being from Day 1...Simple as That... "Vassily Jirov"???...Uuuuuh, Roy Jones was Negotiating w/Bernard Hopkins @ the SAMEfuckingTIME....Fuuuuurthermore, he Ended Up Facing a Bigger, BETTER Fighter in Ruiz (Please Don't Tell REED U Would've PICKED Jirov Over Ruiz).... Pretty Soon, your ONLY Recourse will Be to Go Hiatus Again, Ike...REED is in the Process of BURYing your Ass... REED:cheer:
I'd pick the jirov who ruined mesi to beat ruiz. But that's beside the point since jirov was at his best at 190 which is where he would've faced rjj.
I wish people would stop pretending Ruiz didn't win the fights he did because of shitty referees, and he ran into his kryptonite ref on the night he fought RJJ. Mind you, I don't mourn his loss and I'm glad Roy made him look silly, but Ruiz obviously was not allowed to fight the fight he normally did against other Heavyweights.
& REED Wishes People would just Give Roy Jones his CREDIT for BEATING a Guy who Made MULTIPLE Heavyweight Title Defenses....It's NO Coicidence that those Portraying Ruiz as "The Worst Heavyweight Champion Ever" have Also ALWAYS Been RELUCTANT to Give Roy Jones ANY Credit Whatsoever... That INCLUDES YOU, Noble... Like it or Not, Roy Jones Proved THE BULK of his Naysayers WRONG by Even Taking the Fight...Yet After a Dominant Win, All we Hear is this Monday Morning QB'ing, Hindsight Revisionist BULLSHIT that You're Spewing.... So You're HONESTLY Telling REED that Ruiz Held in EVERY SINGLE OTHER Fight of his, but the ONEfuckingTIME he was Unable to Hold, was when he Faced Roy Jones???...& the FACT that Roy was SMALLER & More ELUSIVE than Anybody Else Ruiz had EVER Faced, Played NO Role in his INability to HOLD as Much, Right???... Keep on "Pretending", Dude... REED:say:
Of Course YOU Would, Doub...It Gives You a Built-In, CONVENIENT Vantage Point to BITCH from...God Forbid Roy Gets Even a SLIVER of Credit... Hell, You're Still INCAPABLE of Admitting You were Flat Out WRONG when you CONFIDENTLY Picked WHOlio Gonzalez to Beat Roy.... Jirov was Getting SCHOOLED by Mesi Until the Very End of the Fight...A USED UP Michael Moorer KO'ed Jirov in his Next Fight After Mesi...Ruiz BEATS Mesi, that Particular Version of Moorer AND Jirov... REED:shadow:
Yes. It's the only fight I'm aware of that Jay Nady reffed of Ruiz's. Ruiz had plenty of opportunity to throw his holds on Roy. He didn't because Nady broke them up as soon as he got inside and repeatedly warned of taking away points if he held. It's pretty simple. Old ass Holyfield and others definitely had much more to contend with then Roy did. Roy gets more credit from me for re-matching Tarver and losing, then he gets for fighting broke ass Ruiz.
