Why wasn't there an immediate Tyson-Douglas rematch?

Because Tyson was a money making machine and losing twice to Douglas would ruin him.

It's a long story (I read a book about Tyson and Douglas a couple months back) but essentially the winner was contractually obligated to fight Holyfield.

It was a long, drawn out court battle though.

    Buster fought beautifully that fight.

As much as he was considered an underdog and how much he apparently "over-achieved" in that fight...........what it actually does, is illustrate how big of an "Under-achiever" he was for the rest of his career.

True, he showed some of that ability against Tony Tucker, but then his heart problem surfaced and he lost.

That night against Tyson was one of the most beautiful pieces of boxing I've ever seen. Even though it was long and systematic, I look at it as every bit as dominant as Ali/Williams.

Kinda sad how it went downhill for the guy after that night. I always thought he was a likeable guy.

douglas would've shown up fat and tyson would've clocked him in 1. that was a pathetic showing in the holyfield fight. i think douglas from the tyson fight would've given holyfield all kinds of trouble.

Douglas never had any particular weapons. He had all-round good talent but not any particular powerful punch which opponents had to look out for.

Douglas pulled the same trick against Tyson that Hopkins used against Tito and Pavlik - slid to his right at distance to keep his lead foot alingned with Mike's. Old timer trick, very intelligent. Nullified Mike's right hand outside and increased the distance Mike had to travel to get inside & work. I've never seen another Tyson opponent do that, and I just youtubed a bunch

Got the same book, loved the story's about Busters dad, Dynamite Bill. According to the story's in the book he was quite the character.

Same here. Interesting character. Actually really enjoyed the book, even the Tyson stuff which has been told a million different ways.

Most boxers aren't equipped to actually pull off "boxing 101", once they're in the ring with an actual opponent.

They could shadow-box the shit out of a mirror or heavybag. Have Tyson winging punches back at you and it's a different story.

That was exactly my point nobleart, Douglas didn't pulled some kind of old school tactic, he did pretty much what every other Tyson opponents tried. He just was able to make it work

It used to be maybe, but look for contemporary examples of guys doing it systematically and you'll barely find them outside Hopkins & Floyd. Trust me, I got a bee in my bonnet about this the other day and I've looked. Go through Tyson fights and look for another opponent who did it. I couldn't find a single one.

I agree, sadly Douglas was a loser at heart, in a rematch, after making all this $$$$, I see him just laying down after the first good shot

Most other Tyson opponents didn't try, Azazel. They were too scared to try anything. Even despite their physical superiority over 5'9" Tyson. You had guys like Tucker who were basically 8" taller with over a foot in reach and not even trying to throw meaningful punches. Then you have Buster Douglas who didn't back up an inch.
Strange how much you can achieve when you're confident.

Danny Williams was kind of the same way. Why didn't he just fall down and take his money and go home after the first shot Tyson landed? Even despite Tyson being past his best, he could still 'rage' for a few rounds. Williams decided to street fight with him and knocked him out.
Etienne, Seldon, Savarese, etc just f*cked off at the sight of the first half assed punch. The Seldon fight is the worst ever.

LOL at people saying it wasn't the real Tyson who showed up against Douglas. Tyson was at his optimum weight. He was ripped. There is nothing which supports the argument that Tyson wasn't at his best that night. Same weight, same shape, same intensity displayed against Douglas as seen in every previous Tyson fight. Only thing is, Douglas didn't crumble like a little cunt and piss his trunks like most of the opposition.

Indeed, it was common knowledge that Tyson looked like shit in training ( when he bothered to showed up ) and that his head wasn't really in it. He also fought like it as he looked awfull throughout the fight

Greg Page dropped Tyson in sparring, leading up to the fight.

I think part of why there wasn't an immediate rematch is because of Don King and Tyson trying to claim the count on Douglas was wrong. Merchant and HBO did a documentary about that and they had Tyson and Douglas on the program the week after the fight.

Douglas saw a big payday and decided not to fight. He was eating pizza in the sauna during training for Holyfield.
