Perhaps the arguement would hold some weight if Tito NEVER AGAIN displayed power after the Hopkins fight. However, in his first comeback fight after Hopkins, he damn near took Hassine Cherifi's head off. Granted, Cherifi was nothing special, but nobody had wrecked him before like that. He also forever RUINED Mayorga's chin.

Tito's power had not a goddamn thing to do with wraps.

 

I don't think it is an either or thing. Barry Bonds had power without steroids. Had he not taken them, would he have the most homers ever, no. Tito could punch . The wraps enhanced them though.

 

I saw zero difference in post-Hopkins Tito in terms of power. But I guess we'll never know for SURE.

 

Tito's punches literally look heavier pre Hopkins. Watch the fights and the motion of his punches, and you'll spot it yourself.

Tito has natural power for sure, but that natural power was exacerbated by a heavier, harder handwrap than usual.

Pre Hopkins his hooks swung round like he had a fucking anvil on the end of his arm. They looked literally heavy.

 

Watch the Cherifi fight. They had the same damn sound and effect to them.

By the time he fought Wright, he was past his prime and due to his declined handspeed his punches had lost alot of VELOCITY.

Tito wasn't as heavy handed as Jackson, or Benn.

Alot of his power depended upon his handspeed, and placement.

 

I did. It is obvious to me some of you haven't boxed. The fact that Tito never hit Winky is irrelevant. If you face a puncher, even when you block it, you are cautious about contact. Winky took Tito's shots like they were nothing so that is a post exposure example. If Tito were a puncher, Winky wouldn't have done what he did. Tito had a masterul technique too. It was almost like a Thai Kick, but with his arms. I actually think the wraps helped him because it protected his hands. His hand was the conduit for all his body weight.

 

Ali couldn't beat Norton (without controversy), so fucking what? He beat Foreman and Liston.

Who cares if a 40 year old Hopkins couldn't beat Taylor according to the judges? As for Roy Jones.....which fucking middleweight would have beaten a young Jones?

No, I think the title is wrong. In the actual article the writer talks mainly about the length of championship reigns and records of the beaten opponents.

However that doesn't make it much better since Sturm still hasn't been a world champion in The Ring's own listings

 

Les Darcy is on the list. He never held the title. Died before he had a chance to fight for it.

 

But as the article points out, a case could be made that he was a champion as much as the ones US press regarded as champs, and he did defend his own version of the title. I'd say it is as legit as Sturm's title

 

You defeat your own point. That Ali struggled with Norton (and also Frazier to a much lesser extent) is strange BUT he has other, history-defining fights/wins to support his claims of being 'the greatest'.

At 160, Hopkins has nothing more than a string of defenses against arguably the worst collection of middleweight 'contenders' in history. The facts show that he lost to both, and only, top-level fighters he met at the weight. beyond his losses to Taylor and Jones, he has precisely ZERO notable wins at 160.

To suggest he is the best middleweight ever is insane.

True, but from that time there is no evidence that the "American Version of the World Middleweight Title" was any more legit in anywhere else than America. Thus I'd say the title is comparable to all the WBAs of today.

It was different with heavyweights for example since the best fighters usually already went to US

Zero.None. Zilch.Null. His best wins were Tito or dlh TWO BLOWN UP welters. Hopkins reign at 160 was shit. As much shit as Calzaghe's resume was, and it was, it was better than Hopkins'.Now if you want to rank Hopkins at 154 or 160 then that is a separate debate. he beat the shit out of welterweights.

Agreed. The Trinidad win was big at the time. It was also part of a short tourney.

The win over Oscar was basically meaningless though. No serious boxing fan gave De La Hoya a chance. The outcome made it even stinkier.
