    Yeah Roy was pretty much self taught in that regard.

    The thing with Roy is that the stuff he did is only teachable to guys who are great athletes blessed with extraordinary reflexes, hand eye coordination, hand speed, etc.

    Its not something that an average Joe could just walk into a boxing gym and try out.

    Doesn't mean it wasn't a skill he developed. If Roy wasn't forced to box every day for hours when he was a kid I'd be more inclined to say it was all natural talent.

    I saw a guy that could do all sorts of amazing tricks with his bicyle...all manner of flips and hops and mad shit. He couldn't teach me to replicate that in 100 years. It was an inherent ability of his enhanced by much training.

    I would never say that he wasn't "skillful" in that craft though.

    The bicycle dude had to learn each trick with hours and hours of repetition. That makes it conscious & teachable. I think Roy mainly just mastered the fundamentals then riffed with the leeway of his speed. Which he was amazing at. It isn't a criticism of Roy, just a comment on the difference between 'skill' & 'talent'. Ditto Ali. Instinctive talents.

    But as steve & I said earlier.....fuck this thread :lol:

    I feel DLh is very very talented..but ended up being kinda low


    Ali is my fav of all tme but he did a lot wrong, him and Roy were more "gifted" than technically schoooled

    Despite what I said I agree Roy had some skill too, to go along with his extreme talent.

    The thing is, if he had less talent, he probably would have been more skillful once those talents declined. Because he could rely on his crazy talent in his prime, he didn't need to develop skill as much as other fighters.

    Ali relied more on his NATURAL gifts than anything else. Especially during his Cassius Clay days; Hand speed, footwork, reflexes.

    Larry Holmes is a great example.

    Duran combined great skill to go along with his natural talent.

    A 70 year old Aikido dude hitting and not getting hit against young men uses skill. 40 year old, fat James Toney hitting and not getting hit vs heavyweights used skill. Picked-last-for-gym, Nicollino Locche hitting and not getting hit used skill.

    The fastest, most athletically gifted fighter of all time, Roy Jones, mainly used speed.

    That isn't a criticism, money is money once it's in your pocket.
