To discuss the intangible of skill. Plenty fighters who would beat Tex Cobb but we can still have threads on the topic of chin.

Yeah Roy was pretty much self taught in that regard.

The thing with Roy is that the stuff he did is only teachable to guys who are great athletes blessed with extraordinary reflexes, hand eye coordination, hand speed, etc.

Its not something that an average Joe could just walk into a boxing gym and try out.

For sure. But it's still skill, and lots of it.

Is being faster than another guy skill?

  6. steve_dave

    steve_dave Hard As Fuck

No, but there have been plenty of fast guys who couldn't beat their meat.

Perhaps Roy Jones would have been less succesfull had he used classic boxing skills.

    Most definitely.

  11. word.

Roy was skillful....fuck Hut and Cdogg...with all due respect to my boyz!

Could Roy have taught what he did to anybody and made it work?

  13. steve_dave

    steve_dave Hard As Fuck

Doesn't mean it wasn't a skill he developed. If Roy wasn't forced to box every day for hours when he was a kid I'd be more inclined to say it was all natural talent.

  14. Who gives a shit?

I saw a guy that could do all sorts of amazing tricks with his bicyle...all manner of flips and hops and mad shit. He couldn't teach me to replicate that in 100 years. It was an inherent ability of his enhanced by much training.

I would never say that he wasn't "skillful" in that craft though.

  15. Hut*Hut

    Hut*Hut The Mackintosh of temazepam

The bicycle dude had to learn each trick with hours and hours of repetition. That makes it conscious & teachable. I think Roy mainly just mastered the fundamentals then riffed with the leeway of his speed. Which he was amazing at. It isn't a criticism of Roy, just a comment on the difference between 'skill' & 'talent'. Ditto Ali. Instinctive talents.

But as steve & I said earlier.....fuck this thread

Roy's style would only work if you had his genetic gifts

Without them, you die in the ring, as he has done with alarming regularity since his genes gave way to the unbeatable opponent- AGE

Agreed, I think even Pacquiao is going to fair better once his physical gifts decline more.

  18. steve_dave

    steve_dave Hard As Fuck

That still doesn't mean he wasn't highly skilled in his own way. You needed his gifts no doubt but the guy was highly skilled.

    Urgh.

Worst thread of the month

Juan Manuel Marquez should be on that list.

  21. All of you guys are fucking crazy.:atu:

Hit and not get hit is a SKILL, motherfuckers! I don't give a shit if you do it conventionally or not...if you master that you are SKILLFUL in the art of boxing.

    Motherfuckers....

    Yeah!

  23. I mean was Darth Maul less skillful than Qui Gon Jinn just because he used the unconventional double Lightsaber?

The hole in Qui Gon's chest says otherwise!

  24. LOK

LOK I'll eat your asshole alive

    Great thread

I "assume" you mean "skill" since that is what you said.. Lol

    SRL
    Floyd
    Toney
    Ali
    Hopkins
    Holy
    Holmes
    Duran
    Tyson
    Dlh
    Haglar
    Roy
    PAC

Funny thing... As I made the list

I feel DLh is very very talented..but ended up being kinda low

Ali is my fav of all tme but he did a lot wrong, him and Roy were more "gifted" than technically schoooled

I don't even think PAC should be on this list.. He is way way down IMO

Despite what I said I agree Roy had some skill too, to go along with his extreme talent.

The thing is, if he had less talent, he probably would have been more skillful once those talents declined. Because he could rely on his crazy talent in his prime, he didn't need to develop skill as much as other fighters.

Ali relied more on his NATURAL gifts than anything else. Especially during his Cassius Clay days; Hand speed, footwork, reflexes.

Larry Holmes is a great example.

Duran combined great skill to go along with his natural talent.

  28. Hut*Hut

    Hut*Hut The Mackintosh of temazepam

    No....

A 70 year old Aikido dude hitting and not getting hit against young men uses skill. 40 year old, fat James Toney hitting and not getting hit vs heavyweights used skill. Picked-last-for-gym, Nicollino Locche hitting and not getting hit used skill.

The fastest, most athletically gifted fighter of all time, Roy Jones, mainly used speed.

That isn't a criticism, money is money once it's in your pocket.

and one more thing: Locche rules
