.....to consider Jon Jones the top P4P fighter in the world today?

His competition is obviously Anderson Silva, who looked very ordinary against Sonnen but then destroy Belfort and Okami.

And next would be GSP, who if not for injury would still be 1 or 2 on this list. but the truth is that GSP will probably have a nearly 2 year gap between fights and his ranking has to suffer.

But when you look at the gap between Jones and his closest competition at 205, it's difficult to put anyone ahead of him on a P4P list. He really hasn't been challenged despite fighting everyone in the UFC's LHW top 10 outside Dan Henderson.

Anderson Silva is on an amazing title run and has ruled with extreme dominance except for the Sonnen fight. In my opinion, that lone exception has to bump Silva down a notch just behind Jones. The good news for Silva is that he can change everything by crushing Sonnen in a couple months.

    Thoughts?

Anderson is undoubtedly number 1. I will put Jones at number 2 though ahead of boring ass GSP.

Right now i have silva at #1, but the sonnen fight will the very important in these rankings. Silva not only has to win, but he has to be dominant. If not, Jones goes to #1.

The only criteria that really matters for p4p is who you think is the best fighter. The resume is just support for your ranking among many other factors. I think the best fighter is Jones, but it's easy enough to make a case for GSP or Silva. Probably not so easy to make a case for anyone else, though. Maybe Aldo, I suppose, as he has had some phenom moments.

I have to agree with mikE. To me P4P is simply a who beats who list if they were exactly the same size.

Resumé is therefore only important to lend weight to the fighter's current level of ability.

Longevity etc doesn't really come into play on a P4P list, that's for historical ranking.

And based on that, not really sure tbh. I would say Silva, GSP and Jones are much of a muchness, I could imagine that exchanging wins and losses in a tournament, if they were all the exact same size.

GSP can't really be in the running though due to inactivity.

For now I would have to put Silva at 1, if they were the same size my money would be on Silva winning.

I dont think that Jones would beat Anderson or GSP if they were the same size, so no. Shit doubt he could beat Aldo if he was his size either.

Jones went the distance against Evans in a rather lackluster fight. Silva and Sonnen are physically far more evenly matched.
Your logic doesn't work here, Godfather.

Jon Jones has made a mockery of the whole weight class system. He shouldn't even be fighting these small guys. He has every conceiveable physical advantage over these guys he's fighting against. It would be a whole different thing if he was trying to trade with somebody like Cheik Kongo, Struve, JDS, Travis Browne or Overeem where they could easily touch his chin given that they are 6'4+ and far physically more powerful than the little guys Jones is fighting.

I think it's difficult to tell at this point. He is a bit of a freak of nature at 205, clearly bigger than everyone he faces.

We'd have to see him against someone his own size to get a better idea.

But like I said, if he can make 205, he's not a heavyweight, even though he is absolutely huge at 205.

He's kind of Hearnsish was as a welter. Size with incomprable skills.

I don't think it will take an MMA equivalent of Leonard to beat him, but a similar approach. Rashad was looking for a countering opportunity. Nothing wrong with that really for the first few rounds. As they went by it was clear it wasn't going to happen though. Jones wasn't going to make a massive mistake.

Evans never pressed the issue. Of course it's easy saying it on the side lines but it was his only chance.

Big difference with size comparing boxing to MMA though. In grappling, size is much harder to overcome than in boxing.

My thoughts are that it is an exciting time to talk p4p, and I still consider Anderson #1. He had injured ribs for the Sonnen fight, but he agreed to fight and he pulled it out. The great ones come perilously close to defeat on occasion, but they usually pull it out unless they are way too old.

Anderson is still that guy. If you want to see someone use their elbows, watch his fight with Tony Fryklund. Now THAT is how you use an elbow.

Not really. In wrestling, picking the taller guy will put you at about 50%.

In boxing, picking the taller guy will put you at about 55%.

GSP and Also = not tall for their weight class.

Jones and Silva = tall for their weight class.

Now, if you mean size meaning weight and not height and length, then I would agree that it means more in grappling, but most of these guys are putting on about the same weight after weigh ins, I'd suppose. Jones probably puts on more, but Edgar surely put on less.

Rashad Evans is a Former HEAVYWEIGHT, Hanz...He's a Completely DIFFERENT Bodytype than that of Jones & he's Fought @ a HIGHER Weight Class than Jones has...As Such, Cease & DESIST w/this Size/Weight BULLSHIT...

TALLER Doesn't Mean BIGGER, Necessarily...Hell, Jones has the Calves of a Fucking Welterweight or Lightweight....

Come on REED. Vitali Klitschko and James Toney are also in the same weight class but we both know it's ridiculous. Hell even Roy Jones was a heavyweight for a day against Ruiz. You know how stupid he would've looked sharing the ring with somebody like Lennox?
Evans tried heavyweight really early in his career in TUF but his place is at LH.
Wouldn't you prefer to see Jon Jones fight at HW against guys who can actually physically match him instead of seeing him fight much smaller guys?

As Others have Said, the Sonnen RE will Go a Loooong Ways Toward Clearing the Lb for Lb Picture for Us...Inactivity (& a String of Lukewarm Performances) has Taken GSP Out of the Mix, but the "Title" is STILL Silva's to Lose...

Jones is Definitely Climbing Up Silva's Back, but that's just the Type of PUSH that Silva Needs...REED's Expecting him to WAX Sonnen in the RE...

Dana went on record and just said Jon Jones will die if he goes up to heavyweight. So it looks like Jones is sticking around in safety fighting little guys at LH for the rest of his career. Dana would prefer it that way. It means there's at least 1 dominant fighter in every division barring heavyweight. (GSP, Anderson, Jones).
JDS hasn't yet proven he's a dominant force at heavyweight yet.

Of course he did. He wants his cash cows to produce for a while. Sending Jones up is a risk. Taking a business approach, not a fans, I think I would prefer him at LHW for a while as well.

Dana can't tell anyone what weight class to compete in. Jones already stated he is definitely moving up to HW, most likely next year. So probably right after he puts poor Dan Henderson in the Hospital.

You forgot one very important thing. Sonnen was on a shit ton of steroids.

I don't know how Dan plans to clinch with him AND avoid elbows.

After Jones ate a pretty good kick to the head from Rashad, I am beginning to wonder if Dan can even knock him out. I don't give him much of a chance. I think he's getting wrecked.

  26. mikE

Don't avoid them, just land first or take them and land.

Even after Shogun went down, I still thought he had perhaps the best chance to beat Jones because he brings the one-punch power and the balls necessary to land against Jones.

Right now, I think it will be very hard to beat Jones on the ground. He seems like a guy who will be able to get off the ground in seconds if he ever gets taken down (the last 20 seconds of the Evans fight notwithstanding). It will take the bomb on the chin via punch or kick. As good as Jones is, he's not impossible to hit.

Although I'd make Jones the clear favorite over anyone at LH, I'd say the best chances go to:

    1. Rua, Silva
    2. Henderson and Evans, assuming he'd go for it in a rematch
    3. Machida
    4. lots of possibles

  27. Hanz

Is that how it works? A fighter manages to survive a kick to the head and now it suddenly means that nobody could possibly knock him out. :l1:
I guess you were part of the crowd on here that also believed "Well if Carwin couldn't KO Lesnar, then how the hell could a poor man's Carwin (Velasquez).
