At a press conference today in Rio de Janeiro, UFC president Dana White mentioned the possibility of light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones (16-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) and Dan Henderson (29-8 MMA, 5-2 UFC) headlining UFC 149. However, White said it'll depend on Jones' recovery following this past weekend's win over Rashad Evans. "If we could make that fight happen (at UFC 149), that'd be great," White said. UFC 149 takes place July 21 at Calgary's Scotiabank Saddledome. The night's main card airs on pay-per-view. Jones, who would have exactly three months between fights if he takes the UFC 149 slot, earned a unanimous-decision victory over Evans this past weekend at Atlanta's Phillips Arena. It marked his seventh straight win, his fourth consecutive victory over a former UFC champ, and his third consecutive title defense. It also cemented his status as one of the sport's top pound-for-pound fighters. Henderson, meanwhile, is on a 7-1 run that includes fights at middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight. The heavyweight win came over Fedor Emelianenko under the Strikeforce banner. Henderson scored a knockout win against the Russian then signed with the UFC and topped light heavyweight Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in a "Fight of the Year" performance at UFC 139. Since then, he's waited on the sidelines for his promised title shot. Henderson said winning a UFC title is the one career milestone that's eluded him in an illustrious career.
Why is it ridiculous? Who should jones fight? Dan is the #1 contender coming off an impressive fight with Shogun. Dan deserves this shot. He has earned it.
Beating Shogun is no big deal. He is shot. Hendo is Half of Jones size, half of jones reach, and half of Jones age. Hendo has NO shot.
Not really. Strikeforce champ means squat. Beating Feijao and Babalu means nothing with regards to getting a UFC title shot. I do Understand that he may be the "most eligible", but thst doesnt say much. Dan Hardy was also the "most eligible" as well, but most of us knowledgable fans knew it was a forgone conclusion.
While I agree with Shoeshiner that it's a pretty stupid match and Dan has about a zero percent chance of winning. He's the most deserving.
I would never give Henderson a 0% chance of winning any fight. The dude will sell out trying to land that right hand even if he puts himself in harm's way in the process. It's a mismatch on paper but personally I want to see how Jones beats Henderson. Can he do it in spectacular fashion? Can he stop Hendo with strikes for the first time? Sorry, but I want to see it more than any other match for Jones currently at 205.
It's going to be ugly for Dan. I mean he obviously has a puncher's chance, but he is going to be tiny compared to Jones. It's going to be hard for him to get in close enough to land that right hand.
Yep. If Rashad or Rampage couldn't get inside i don't see how Henderson will. That said i think Hendo will take more of a risk at least trying to do it. He'll get butchered, but it should be entertaining.
it's hard to pick against henderson, but this is the first time since the rampage fight where i'm convincingly going against hendo. i think jones beats him easily and then later fights that swedish cat (who's overrated imo). jones should then get a tune up fight at heavy just to see if he fits.
