Rank these fighters from most skilled to least skilled

  1. There weren't many, I grant you that but there were a handful of fighters that were comparable to Jones in terms of speed. Zab Judah for example. Prime Mosley. Meldrick Taylor. They didn't have anywhere near the same success in terms of hit and not get hit, though.

    Why...you ask?

    They had less skills, baby!

  2. Anyway...

If we take speed outta the equation and are just looking at textbook skill...there are only two men in history to consider for the title:

    Mayweather and Hopkins

Balance, positioning, punching precision blah blah blah

    They do everything right.

Hut, take a Mongoose for example, it clearly has a lot of natural fighting aptitude.

Do you consider this to be mainly pure natural talent/instinct, or large part fighting skill?

The mongoose didn't learn how to kill a cobra - so it's all talent, no learned skill. Like Amir Khan. Except smarter.

  9. You're driving me nuts, hutster!! :atu:

Skill doesn't have to be learned. You can have inherent skill. Skill is ability.

    skill/skil/
    Noun:

The ability to do something well; expertise.
    A particular ability.

If you do something well, you are skillful. Doesn't matter if you learned it, were born with it or you fucked a Scottish woman with Red hair and freckles. Skill is skill.

In sport, skill interacts with talent and talent interacts with skill. They potentiate each other & blur each other. But there's a legit conceptual difference.

It's the difference between a master carpenter & Usain Bolt. They both do something brilliantly but surely you can see the difference between them? That's what this (horrendous ) thread is about

  11. That's not what this thread is about. You want to create your own definition and relegate "talent" to merely speed and reflexes. You want to relegate "skill" to only be textbook learned ability.

Well, I'm not buying what you're selling, padna.

Boxing isn't like sprinting. It's not just about speed. You can have the fastest fucking guy in the world...even he doesn't know how to avoid and land punches he's useless. He needs SKILL to be successful in this craft. The SKILL is the ability to dish it out and to stay out of danger. After that it doesn't matter HOW you do it, just that you do it.

'Rate these fighters in terms of skill'

    Not 'rate these fighters'

  13. "skill" is synonymous with "ability" and with "expertize".

Was not Roy Jones an Expert in his craft?

    Fighter Undisputed Champion

Sugar Ray Leonard, Floyd and Roy in that order. Pacquaio also very high after the discovery of his right hand. Ali got hit too much but more skilled than Holmes, Evander and Tyson, in that order.

    Hopkins, then Toney then Hagler.

One thing is certain. Oscar dead last in that list.
