No, they aren't. My grandmother never set foot in this country. I never grew up with any other Italians. In fact, the first time I met an "Italian-American", I was in graduate school. These idiots didn't know any Italian(not that I do anymore), never been there, etc. Secondly, my family was part of the tiny middle class, not these disgusting peasants who came here to scrub toilets and came probably 100 years after most of these tools. I actually grew up a surfer kid in SOcal. The only difference is when I went to visit one of my grandmothers, she lived in Italy and disdained English and "THE Whore's country" . Even though it sounded beautiful in ITALIAN, her argument was essentially "any married women who wears lipstick is a vile std ridden whore and she would not step foot in such a place." So no, they aren't my people. They wouldn't be in Italy either.

Only those who are proud of it. I don't know if you watched the HBO series the "wire." They were all poor. One kid, whose name escapes me , was poorer than the rest and smarter and the rest of the kids harassed and humiliated him for trying to become educated. I have a huge amount of contempt for anti-intellectual people.I have contempt for the pride in poverty which is also a disgusting tenant of Christianity. In short, it is unfortunate to be poor, but a crime to be proud of it.
