Lets start with Canelo-Mosley. First off, credit to Shane. I honestly thought he was just there for a payday, and would go into survival mode after 3-4 rounds. But credit to him. He tried his hardest to win. He simply cannot pull the trigger anymore. He's a shell of the fighter that beat Margarito, let alone of his prime self. Still, even at age 40 he showed a helluva chin and toughness. The flush combos Canelo hit him with would have taken out most junior middles, and Shane could have easily quit after being hurt to the body. And frankly, if he did nobody would have blamed him. He's showed us heart enough times in his career. He didn't need to do it again last night. But he did. Having said that, lets all hope that last night was it for him. He's gonna get seriously hurt if he continues on after this. As for Canelo. He's a pretty good fighter. Certainly not as good as his hype suggests. They're trying to hype him as the next Latino superstar like DLH, or Tito, and he still doesn't have that level of talent. But he's a good fighter. Heavy handed, good handspeed, places his punches well, and has a good jab when he actually uses it. The flaws: Too patient and methodical. Not very quick on his feet. He'll do well against guys who stand in front of him. But in the face of some angles, and movement, I think he'll struggle. Also, he had a good defense last night because Shane is such a looping puncher, and doesn't have a fraction of the handspeed he once had. Canelo was able to pick off most of Shane's wide shots with his gloves. Once Canelo faces a guy who punches straight up the middle, he'll get tagged up a lot more. I think the worst matchup for him at 154 is Lara. He'll KO Kirkland quickly and easily though. He'd be a live dog against Cotto. Miggy has simply taken too much punishment. Even a 40 yr old Shane has a much better chin than Cotto, so if Canelo were to catch Cotto with those same shots, Cotto would be on Queer Street. As of right now though, Cotto is still a higher calibre fighter than Canelo. Moving onto Floyd-Cotto. It was a very good fight. After re-watching it for a 2nd time, I had Floyd winning 9-3. I could also 8-4, but no more than that. There's no way in HELL Cotto won 5 rounds. The fact that Cotto bloodied his nose with jab, and was banging away on the inside made the fight seem a lot closer than it was. The truth is, Floyd was blocking most of everything Cotto threw, and catching him with clean counters in between which steadily took its toll on Miggy. I also feel that with 8 oz gloves, Floyd would have done more damage and probably would have gotten Cotto out around the 10th or 11th. But anyway, credit to Miguel for giving it his all, and giving Floyd a tough fight. It WAS a tough fight for Floyd, but a tough fight he won by a very clear margin. Floyd has def slipped though. He's not nearly as quick on the trigger now as he was 5 years ago. However, his defense is still brilliant, and his ring IQ is still second to none. Cotto proved he still had something left in the tank, but I suspect he'll never again be the same. He'll never again be as "up" for a fight as he was last night, plus he took somewhat of an ass whuppin in the last few rounds. I'd just like to see him retire. It's a good way to go out. He gave the best fighter of this generation a tough fight, in a losing effort. No shame in that. If he keeps going, he's gonna eventually lose to a guy he has no business losing to. Lastly, styles make fights. Floyd will still beat Manny. Cotto's style has always been better suited to deal with boxers than Manny's style is. Manny would be lost against Floyd. He's not nearly as physical as Cotto, and in all honesty, Cotto has a higher ring IQ than Pac. Make no mistake though...... both Floyd and Manny have slipped. I hope that Bradley upsets Manny, so casual fans can STFU about Mayweather-Pac already. Casual fans think its the only good fight to be made in boxing, but at this point, I don't even care to see it anymore.
Yeah Floyd's reflexes have slowed. But he has a good chin and is alot tougher than given credit for. Im thinking he would beat Pacquiao now. I've back and forth on it but Manny has slowed more than Floyd. Cotto I think still has a bit left but there's not much out there for him now. He could fight Canelo but that fight is much too risky for Alvarez at this point. Oscar will seek out safer fights for Freckles.
Thoughts??? I love he feeling when two proven fighters are in the ring ready to do combat...it's magical. And it doesn't happen for every fight just special fights/fighters. I think I would get the feeling when/if Pac vs.May ever happens....
yeah, it's like two realities colliding - Tony Soprano showing up in The Wire or something, always kinda surreal. There's nothing else like it in sports. The whole event would be incredible even if the fight wasnt
Good thoughts.. I think Floyd has only slipped slightly.. I really really think Floyd did not step it up and times.. His best shot to get PAC is to not look too great but he was still mpressive and won 9 rounds Shane.. Like manny Stewart says, looks like he doesn't have any punching power anymore.. He needs to hang it up IMO Canelo punches very very strong.. Shane took somewhat of a beating
It was weird seeing Shane last night, he looked so weak. Even in the Pacquiao fight the few punches he did throw looked to have some meat and veloicity on them, on Saturday he looked so weak and slow, no snap on his punches at all, just sort of pushing them out there. He really does need to retire now, he's completely shot.
How can you guys watch that fight last night and conclude Canelo is a good puncher. One of the stupidest things I have ever read here. Shane has always been a guy to wilt when things don't go his way and never wilted. At 40, he just didn't suddenly get tougher. Canelo landed 100 flushshots to the head and the body and Shane never was in danger of going anywhere. Canelo can't punch at all. Shane wasn't rolling, wasn't blocking, he was taking flush power shots. Shame always had a good chin, but the featherfisted Forrest had him nearly out. Canelo never came close to stopping the punching bag version of Shane.
"the feather fisted forrest" :atu: this guy is such a brain dead. mosley is a pussy, no one is any good.
He can punch. But its all relative. He certainly doesn't have Tito like power, but Canelo does have good pop. I'll give him that much. He has more than enough power to KO shit chinned Kirkland at least. Still, if that were young Tito, or Julian Jackson hitting Shane flush like that last night, Shane would have been under ground. As for his size. He isn't a small junior middle. He's a SHORT junior middle. There's a difference. His frame is certainly that of a junior middle. Canelo is actually PERFECT for 154. He's too big for 147, and he'd be too small to compete at 160. So 154 is just right for him.
Whatever!:: You cared to see Fraud vs anybody else but don't care to see Fraud/Pacman. It's because you're scared that Pacman is going to expose this slowed down aging piece of overrated sh*t and ruin Fraud's career! And yeah, you'd f*cking watch it. You'd buy this sh*t on PPV in HD for $79.95 or whatever it'll be.
FORREST wasn't a puncher, at all. Shane's career is well documented. It is not my job to watch fights for you. If you think Shane has demonstrated toughness from a professional fighter's perspective, I question you have seen his career. Shane has folded in several in his fights and is easily discouraged. It speaks volumes that a younger, stronger fighter couldn't discourage a completely shot fighter who even in his prime was easily discouraged.
I think Shane has always shown a good chin, and like Ike said.. He really doesn't have good defense.. To have as good a career as he has had is really impressive considering he is usually really aggressive and doesn't bob and weave or roll anything It was really kinda surprising that Shane didn't go down.. I thought Canelos punches looked and sounded pretty heavy but either his punching is over rated or chin is incredible
Anybody can hurt anybody with a punch. Them right hands that Forrest hit Shane with in round looked brutal. It looked like Shanes head was gonna fly out of the ring.
I hope you meant you to say "Canelo" would beat the shit outta Kirkland. Because in case you forgot, Angulo and Kirkland fought, and the opposite happened. CANELO would beat the shit outta Kirkland. Canelo isn't anything special, but he's a good fighter. World class, just not elite. James Kirkland is a FNF calibre fighter.
