Jack's Joker first killed his former boss (Jack Palance) then proceed to gather all the mafia bosses and have them all killed (off camera) right after he joyfully fried the mafioso Antwon with a handshake. The little speech to the fried corpse was pure psychotic; the whole scene was disturbing for a 1989 PG movie.

but it isn't really in a realistic universe, so it doesn't add up to as much - killing people in some stylised gothic/1950s comic-book world doesn't really carry as much weight. nolan clearly pitches the dark knight in a more realistic universe, in the setting, the characters, and the bone-crunching violence, so when heath ledger does bad shit it has a bit more of a nasty punch. i remember when the people in 'batman' are being gassed in the streets, they ham it up like they're in a musical, clutching at their throats, really camp. bale beating the shit out of ledger in the interrogation scene is darker than that.

saying that, i completely agree, nicholson's joker was fantastic and sinister in its own way. i probably rate the batman movies:

the dark knight has some fantastic elements to it, but the movie as a whole is just too bloody protracted, and what the hell is the point of the bale/batman character? dopesn't really inspire any real emotional investment i reckon.

for people who just say they like nolan's batman because "it's darker!", fine, go enjoy your My Chemical Romance albums.

I agree with Rooster. Jack's joker just didn't seem to come from a realistic universe whereas Ledger's did. I mostly laughed at the stuff Jack did, because it was so far from reality. When Ledger puts the knife in that guys mouth I was practically squirming. I think both performances were great but from a directors standpoint Jack's joker was obviously meant to be a comedic relief as well as a villian, Ledger's not so much.
