largely illegal style..what, like Holyfields style in alot of his fights? :dunno: i didn't ever notice Evander to have a problem clinching like a bitch..it's just a shame that Tyson combat his illegal holding shit like Ruiz could

the bottom line is Holyfield had 2 close fights with Lewis...and right after that had 3 close fights with Ruiz....(without being ruined by Lewis, obviously)

He did dominate him---in the first fight. The second fight people tend to score closer for Holyfield because he wasn't getting mashed nearly as much as the first bout.

He didn't dominate him in the first fight, he won the first two rounds, lost the third, won the 5th big, a round he would have stopped Evander in if he wasn't so cautious, then spent the rest of the fight swapping rounds with Evander.

I had Holyfield winning the 3rd and the 11th, with him probably winning 3 at least, maybe 4, of the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th. Lewis won his rounds bigger, but he blew it. He could have reduced Holyfield to a quivering wreck in the 5th but he let off, for no apparent reason. Of all Manny Stewards infamous shit-fits during fights {Wlad vs Haye, Taylor vs Stinks, Lewis vs Tyson etc} none even came close to Manny losing the plot during the 5th round. And Manny was a much younger man back then too.

A good video for a lot of reasons, depending on what you are looking for.

Holyfield shows his toughness, he took a mammoth right to the back of the head, an illegal punch, and that started it all off. The first might have been an accident but you can see the referee warn him again when he tries it a 2nd time @ 1:23 of the video. Mercante did NOT go over to "take a good look at Evander", Jim. :shit:

Lewis shows the heaviest hands the division has shown for a long time, but also shows how he sort of gasses and needs to back off.....a guy like Vitali would not be quite as heavy with his hands, but could get off more punches, and keep Holyfield pinned in longer there. Lewis was looking for single bombs. Maybe he should have gambled, he might have been afraid of getting countered or gassing.

Lewis shows a good bit of variety, few nice bodyshots. Look at how Holyfield even brings his leg up to try to protect himself.

Oh, and a great Foremanism...."When Lewis bends his waist...TROUBLE STARTS!!! Evander Holyfield has done a good job of making him bend every now and then"

Holyfield had 3 close fights with the great John Ruiz right after...that should be acknowledged

He was not shot. He was in good form and still champ.

Yeah and Hopkins was in 'good form' and still champ when he fought Dawson. He was 113 years old.

Holy was pushing 40, looked much slower, weaker and less sharp than he did in his prime.

If he wasn't shot, he wasn't far from being shot.

Prime Holy schools the shit out of that big cowardly faggot.

No he's better, and won both fights clearly IMO

Agreed on both counts. But Holy was borderline shot.

You can't blame Lewis for Holyfield delaying the fight for so long though, mex. When Holyfield finished with Moorer in 97, negotiations went on and on for Holyfield/Lewis for over a year. Holyfield much like Bowe and Tyson weren't exactly banging on Lewis' door. Bowe tossed the WBC title into a garbage can on public tv in '91 to avoid Lewis, Tyson threw away the WBC title to avoid Lewis in '96, and Holyfield wasn't keen on facing Lewis until he basically managed to squeeze Lewis for a $20 million payday which is what delayed the fight for over a year.
Look how long it took Tyson to finally agree to a Lewis fight. It was always "I need 2-3 more fights before I'm ready for Lewis!"
Tyson and Bowe ducked the sh*t out of Lewis! It was so obvious. Even Tyson fans can't disagree with that.

Lewis gave Holyfield way too much respect IMO. If Lewis opened up on Holyfield after the 3rd round (Holyfield spent all his energy in that round), Holyfield would've been finished in 5. Lewis didn't bring the killer instinct in that fight like he did against Golota, Ruddock, Grant, etc. He was too cautious. He still got the decision easily though regardless of the fixed scoring.

    Lewis was a bitch

when they were young Tyson and Lewis used to spar and Lewis was said to be WAY TOO GREEN..

years later.. he was still too green

he didn't try to get Mike until Mike was declared unfit to fight.. they banned him from almost every state

Tyson didn't want the fight ever. He was too small for Lewis anyway.

hold on a second... you are laying the blame for the frequent clinching in Holyfield/Ruiz 1-3 at Holyfield's feet?:laugh11:

Holy was definitely old and past his best, but I think "shot" is a bridge too far

He was shot by the time James Toney was beating him up

Holyfields "prime" involved him losing 2 out of 3 to Bowe, losing one out of two to Moorer and nearly getting blasted out by Bertrand Cooper and being made to look thick by Bobby Chizz.

He was also a perennial cheat, via the PED's and the butts.

    Lewis was simply better.

I'd say Holy was simply better. Let's not forget he was a former cruiserweight and old, and Lewis fought him like a cowardly bitch. If they were the same size, Holy would have crushed him.

Lewis's prime consisted of getting knocked the fuck out by Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman.

    I'll take Holy's prime over Lewis's prime.
