I don't think The Fifth Element bombed.

good thread. also if you widen it to not only commercial failure but also to critical failure.

saying that, i can't think of any right now.

bram stoker's dracula got pretty sceptical reviews back in the day, but i always thought it was pretty cool.

 

almost all of woody allen's recent oeuvre. e.g. 'hollywood ending' got slammed as "yet another self-indulgent failed allen outing" but it was fantastic, great formula movie.

True. It was a critical and box office failure, but I watched it twice when it was released and bought the vhs & dvd. Is a guilty pleasure film for me. Love the songs and at the time the computer effects were cool. Plus I had a crush on Olivia Newton John when I was younger.:bow:

Mission to Mars - budget - 90,000,000/ gross - $60,874,615
Chronicles of Riddick - budget - 110,000,000/ gross - $57,637,485

Just for the record, all those numbers were taken from IMDB. The budget's were estimates and the gross' were only from the USA so they might have made more in foreign sales.

If I went around saying "Blacks are children of a lesser god. They are all going to hell" but my favorite albums were all by Tupac, Rhianna, Biggie and R.Kelly and my favorite movies were Boyz N The Hood and Juice, wouldn't you expect someone to notice that contradiction?

 

Funny, looking at your list. Throw John Carter in there and the moral for any studio executive looking to keep his job is:

Don't, under any circumstances greenlight a movie in which the planet Mars is a central figure. You may also want to avoid movies in which Vin Diesel travels to planets which remind you of Mars.

Lone exception - getting a prime Arnold attached to said project.

 

Well, if I was a studio head..........Colin Farrell filling in for Arnold doesn't scream Box Office Gold to me.

Whether it's actually any good is another matter.

I liked both the Mars movies on Lb for Lb.'s list.

 

I was watching "Daylight" with Stallone the other day. I don't remember if that movie bombed or not, but its actually a pretty good movie.

 

The fact that gays loved the Broadway musical had nothing to do with the 1980 film. I like musicals. I like old Gene Kelly films and it was a treat to watch him at age 80 dancing and rollerscating. The film soundtrack sold millions of copies and had a few top ten hits when it first came out. No one thought of 'gay' when this movie came out. In fact when I went to watch it on its first weekend of release a bunch of my karate pals came along too. None of us felt the movie was gay at all. No contradiction here. But I still refuse to watch 'Broke Back Mountain', a film you probably enjoyed.:l2:

it did, but then it was a low budget film so it wasn't much of a bomb or a hit. Critics loved it. It is a good drama.

 

John Carter was a bit uneven, but it was a really good movie. It belongs in this thread.

That film had some terrible science, but then which disaster film doesn't? But it was damned entertaining.
