Very sad. RIP champ. The mind can be a terrible thing when you lose control of your thoughts and emotions.
Fewer people were more worthless than he. A piece of shit loser who caused nothing but pain to all who surrounded him. Later loser. It is as shocking as Amy wINEHOUSE DYING. Surprised he lived as long as he did.
Well, now his wife will not suffer anymore. Sad but true. He threatened to kill himself if she left him. That's one huge burden to carry right there.
Haymaker beat me to it. Fuck Tapia! Only a scumbag would hold a caring person hostage like that by coontinually threatening suicide. Not saying I'm GLAD he's dead, but I don't give a shit that he's dead either. He's finally out of his wife's misery.
He had some great fights and a blazing rivalry with Danny Romero back in the day. I don't know what kind of person he was, but he was a great boxer.
He seemed like a cool guy in the recent interviews i seen him in. I remember him most for his fights with Ayala.
Tapia the boxer was very entertaining, but I always hated when he opened his mouth. He was a wife beater and a total loser outside the ring.Like others pointed out, it is amazing he lasted this long since I thought that once he was out of the boxing radar he will surely kill himself one way or another. R.I.P. Tapia the champ. Burn in hell piece of shit poor excuse of human being.
I agree he did come across as a piece of shit outside the ring, like blackmailing his wife with suicide etc, but at the same time you can obviously see why he was messed up. I wouldn't wish that upbringing on my worst enemy. RIP.
Childhood Johnny Tapia's life began with tragedy. His father had reportedly been murdered while his mother was pregnant with him. When he was eight years old, his mother, Virginia, was kidnapped, raped, hanged, repeatedly stabbed, and left for dead by her assailant. Tapia was awakened by her screams and saw her chained to the back of a pickup truck. He tried to alert others in his household, but no one believed him. His mother was later found by the police and taken to the hospital after she had crawled 100 yards to a road. She died four days after the attack without regaining consciousness
Dude had "Mi Vida Loca" Tatted on his Body Back when it WASN'T Trendy to have Tats or Messages Upon your Body... In a Way, REED Likens Johnny Tapia to Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whittaker in the Sense that he was a SMALL Guy, WASN'T Very Strong, COULDN'T Punch a Lick, yet MORE than Held his Own Against Bigger Guys...Like "Sweet Pea", Despite his LACK of Pop, Tapia Hit Hard Enough to Earn RESPECT from the Guy Eating those Punches...He was Also SKILLED & TOUGH as Hell, like Pernell was... Jokes have Already been Made about Tapia's Death, but REED WON'T Partake in It...Despite Boxing's FLIMSY Hall of Fame Standards, Tapia's an EASY 1st Ballot Guy...As Such, he DESERVES Better than to Be Mocked, Hours After his Death.... R.I.P. Johnny Tapia REEDray:
