He sure knocked a lot of guys on their asses for a guy who "couldn't crack an egg"... he was not a big hitter, but he could hit hard enough to get respect

regardless, I don't understand these discussions. Most great fighters have styles and tactics consistent with their best physical attributes... quickness of hand and foot, brains and hand-eye coordination were Whitaker's greatest attributes, his style/tactics were a direct reflection of that

If he has Ernie Shavers' punch, he's not Pernell Whitaker anymore

If Muhammad Ali had Jerry Quarry's speed, he would not have been Muhammad Ali

    It's all married together

A chin may be a different sort of argument... but I still say it's a weird discussion... if Thomas Hearns has Marvin Hagler's cementhead, surely it alters the way he fights and thus he is no longer Thomas Hearns, he is now different

I might be in the minority but I think pernell was already one of the best ever...

    Hey dumbasses!!!!!!

Now that I got your attention, let me remind you that I said bigger power.. say Leonard like power. Is that an extreme a difference in power that it would somehow change who he was as a fighter and make him less brilliant a boxer than he was????

Some who responded here acted as if I posed the question "What if PEA could hit like Earnie Shavers?"

    Again........dumbasses!!!!!:bangh:

  8. What if Cassius Clay had Foreman power?

What if Roberto Duran was Roberto Duran?

    .. wait.

  10. Good one.

If Roberto Duran was Roberto Duran I'd suspect that he'd get DEMOLISHED in 2 rounds by Thomas Hearns. Fall flat on his face and not get up.

I dunno why, I just have that suspicion...

Duran = GOAT. Near perfect fighting machine at his peak.

  12. Yup against anyone that wasn't elite. As soon as he faced the Haglers, Hearns, Benitez, Leonards, Laings ()...he didn't seem all that invincible.

    GOAT my ass.

Mayweather, Jones, Ali, Robinson.....now you're talking potential GOAT.

Good point, when he faced a peak, undefeated Leonard he dominated him, one of the greatest wins in boxing history :bears:

He would have dominated Floyd too, but more so.

  17. would have should have means nothing. had we never seen Tyson-Douglas we would have said the same. I think Floyd would have beaten Duran with room to spare.

Yeah he beat leonard 1 out of 3 fights. The sun shines on even a dogs ass sometimes.

He beat Leonard when they were both at their best, ie when it mattered.

Imagine that, an aging fighter 3 divisions past his best weight getting demolished by an all-time great fighter in his prime. Unheard of!

How well do you think Leonard would've fared against Roy Jones Jr at 168 lbs?

  22. Hut*Hut

1990 era Ray Leonard vs Prime Roy Jones at 168.

    Pick 'em!

2005 era Roy Jones vs Prime Holyfield at 190.

    Pick 'em!

What is Arturo Gatti and Sugar Ray Leonard swapped brains?

So Leonard's brain in Gatti's body vs. Gatti's brain in Leonard's body.

    Who wins?

  24. Hut*Hut

    Hut*Hut The Mackintosh of temazepam

Good one! I think Gatti with Leonard's body, but if Gatti had been given a honey badger's brain all bets are off.

So after the swap, who would be Gatti, & who would be Leonard?

  27. Duran fans have every excuse in the book. Leonard was the only elite fighter he ever beat. The next best fighter he beat (DeJesus) also beat him. Buchanan? Please.

What happened when he was tested against Hearns, Hagler, benitez? Lost to Laing.

    Overrated.

He beat Leonard once. Norton beat Ali once. Perhaps Norton is the GOAT.

Ali is the most overrated fighter in boxing history. Lost to Young, lost to Norton 3 times, lost to Frazier. What great wins does he have? Oh yeah, one, Foreman.

    Duran > Ali all day.

this really is a good one

IMO SRL brain in Gatti's body could still be an all time great

Gatti in SRL body would still be a club fighter

I rank Duran higher than Ali all time, but Ali is my #1 at HW. He was coming off a 3 year layoff when he lost to Frazier, a loss he avenged twice. He was old and fat when he lost to Young. I thought Ali edged the second Norton fight, he clearly lost the other two though. Norton would've probably troubled any version of Ali.

You forgot about Sonny Liston, not to mention a myriad of good contenders in the 60s & early 70s, any of whom might be champions today.

Frazier, Foreman, and Liston are 3 impressive heads to have on any heavyweight's resume.
