Always wondered how he and a guy like fELIX sAVON would have done as pros. It really is a different sport. Stevenson was the one of if not the best amateur fighter ever. Then again, Jorge Luis Gonzalez looked like a gangster when he tortured Reynaldo Snipes. He then got rolled by Bowe and Witherspoon, especially spoon he chopped him like a tree. Gonzales was nowhere near their level though.

    Always wondered though.

Stevenson-Bobick is the fight that started me following boxing.

Bobick beat Stevenson prior and was favored to win gold at the Munich Olympics. Yeah, didn't work out that way. Stevenson treated Duane like a Bobick-Head doll for 3 rounds.

Sad to see him pass. Even more sad was the fact that he likely would have won 5 Olympic gold medals if not for boycotts. The best amateur boxer I've ever seen.

[1] I disagree. Not worth debating here, but I would just point out that Stevenson didn't wear headgear so he was even closer to the pro game.

[2] I also disagree, but Gonzalez's discipline as a pro was lacking and he didn't carry the extra weight as well as some. Since he didn't look too bad physically, I'd say it was because he didn't use juice. JLG stopped both Bowe and Lewis in the ams. That is about as high as you can get in level.

I don't know. The current heavyweight division is REALLY crappy, but Stevenson never fought as a pro, so there's no way to determine how good he may have been as a pro. Could he fight 10 or 12 hard rounds? Would his power carry over into the Pro ranks? How would his chin hold up?

I suspect he could be good enough to be a contender right now, but there isn't enough evidence for me to think he could beat Vitali....or even Wlad.

Shit. You're right. He beat them both at the same tournament--1987 pan am games. Impressive, but not as impressive.
