Finally watched this film and let me tell you that I liked it a lot. More entertaining than I thought. Even with its minor liberties it is closer to the Edgat Rice Burroughs book than any of the Tarzan movie's ever made were close to its source. Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, WALL-E) first live action film is a two and a half hours long, but you never feel is that long since it keeps a fast pace, the story and characters (plus the great special effects) keeps interested the whole time. Taylor Kitsch, the same actor who played Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine plays John Carter, a civil war veteran who is transported to Mars where, like Superman, his molecules in that planet allows him to jump at incredible heights and distances plus super strength. Lynn Collins plays the babelicious Princess of Mars who here is also a Xena-like warrior princess. IMO the weakest thing was the main bad guy, who seemed more like a gangster than a ruthless world conqueror. The CGI aliens and creatures were top notch, Avatar-like characters who you didn't thought much of them as special effects, but characters. Talking about the effects: in this film there isn't a single 'wow!' effect just for the sake of creating something mindblowing. The effects in this film merely tools to tell this story. Too bad this film was so expensive and that it bombed here in USA since I'll love to see a sequel (in other countries, titled more apropriately, John Carter of Mars the film did very well and ultimately will recoup its investment). I'll buy the bluray when it comes out. 8/10

yeah i heard it's actually a pretty good movie, just has that flop stigma attached to it now.

One of my favorite movies, Sorcerer by W. Friedkin was a massive flop in it's day, too.

Yeah, that was a good movie too, even though the original 1953 french film "The Wages of Fear' was better. I agree with some comments in the thread "John Carter bombs!" that Disney did a lousy job promoting this film and the first mistake was the title: John Carter' without the 'Of Mars" or maybe "A Princess of Mars" which were more recognizable titles. Do you know that maybe the most beloved movie in Hollywood history, "The Wizard of Oz" was a major flop when it debuted in 1939, the same year that "Gone with The Wind", "Stagecoach", "Mr Smith Goes to Washington", "Beau Geste",'Ninotchka" and dozens of other great classics were released?

I saw it and have mixed feelings. To this day I'm not sure if I lean towards liking it or not, so I guess I'd say I'm in the middle. There were certain scenes I liked (like him attacking a whole army by himself, and the ending) but mostly I felt a lot of the film was kind of boring. I also felt kind of silly watching a bunch of star wars creatures and guys in funky outfits. Like I said, I really liked the ending but I don't think I'd ever sit through it again.

Kind of funny seeing Jimmy "bust balls" from The Wire as the lead villian and I agree with Panchy that he was mediocre but at the same time his character wasn't really "running thangs" so to speak. He was just a figure head.

I just saw it and quite liked it. Too bad it flopped. All they had to do was pick a snazzy title and market it differently. They could have called it The Warlord's Destiny or A Journey to the Stars and it would have had a much different effect right away. Calling it John Carter was a misfire as was the uncharacteristically low-key marketing approach.

I don't like that at all. They should have called it The Chronicles Of Mars as Nobes has mentioned, that's a badass title.

Also the movie poster in USA sucked. The posters in other countries were better and had the better title "John Carter of Mars". Needless to say the movie did way much better overseas.

This film just reminded me of Gentlemen Broncos.

I tried to buy the bluray, but it sold out like hot cakes. I traveled like 18 miles stopping at different stores and all the John Carter blurays had sold out. Not bad for a movie that tanked at the box office. Apparently most people saved the movie tickets money to buy the bluray. Interesting.

Awful movie, the princess is a terrible actor lead man not so bad but not great. The fist hour or so is so slow and boring.

Nothing original it's a little star wars and little avatar

Avatar and Star Wars took a lot from the John Carter books. The Edgar Rice Burroughs series inspired the filmmakers behind those movies.

That maybe true but as a movie it was nothing new. I really don't know how anyone could enjoy this movie, for kids it was too long boring and for adults it's just plai awful..

I finally bought the blu-ray and my kids watched it with me. They loved it and were very disappointed when I told them there will be no sequel.

  14. I'm 20 minutes into this and I'm intrigued! I'll see what happens....

So, has anyone read the original 'Barsoom/Mars' novels by Edgar Rice Boroughs? I think I have some old ones in my attic but never got round to reading them as a kid...

You cannot make a review based only on the opening title sequence (heck no,the title came after like 3 minutes of the opening). So your review is crap.:shit:

Nonsense! My review is valid because the whole point of a movie panchy is to keep your interest immediately. If you're bored out of your mind then you flick the channel or turn it off. John Carter was a waste of time but I'm going to give it another shot tonight. Reviews say it's good so I will watch the whole thing.

5/10 first 30-45 minutes are very good..it does what a movie is suppose to you...grab you...but then it kinda just fall flat...Lynn Collins(Dejah) is delicious...first time i remember seeing her was on Xmen wolverine..delicious...but she has a kinda rough face..at times she looks beautiful....at other times face is a bit rough and manly...it might be a mirage...hollywood can really fix 'em up...

anyway won't watch this one again....ever...
