the plot, the characters where awful at one point i heard "its christmas and i want to get my presents".

there was no characterisation at all. i didnt give a shit about any of them.

it felt like some tv deep space nine bullshit.

just wasnt my thing i guess. i was kind of interested to see where it was leading which did hold my attention, but the characters where so fucking stupid. i mean the old guy was a young guy in make up, why?

    the android was good though.

this from the guy that made alien....

It being christmas actually part of the movie. It was a small hint that scott dropped. Another association that the reason the Engineers started to hate us was because we killed Jesus, who was an engineer himself.

The old man was very important. Should they have used a real old man, sure, but it doesnt matter really. But he was a very important piece of the puzzel. He represented Everything the engineers hated. He was the complete opposite of the engineers, were all about self sacrifice.

    Agree with the characters.
But how can you top 'Alien' (in any way at all?) John Hurt, Harry Dean Stanton (in a Hawaiian shirt, no less), Ian Holm, Yaphet Kotto, Veronica Cartwright, Sigourney Waever, Tom Skerritt - it was a great cast!

Everything about that movie was superb: acting, characterisation, sets, music, set-pieces. It's one flaw (if you can call it a flaw) was the overall story.

However, it was Ridley's magnum-opus and he'll never top it.

I don't know.:dunno: I didn't quite have a concept of what I had watched when I came out of the theater. It's like the movie was supposed to be something special but really ended up being a whole 2 hours about a lot of nothing where some morons who seemed like a bunch of college drop outs are going to a distant planet and trying to discover life.
Seems to me Ridley Scott had great ideas in mind and just couldn't put it into film the way he likely imagined it.
Also the woman cutting up her torso to give birth and then stapling it together and running around right after like it didn't hurt much was pretty funny. I don't think that sh*t was even remotely realistic. All that severed tissue and sh*t didn't hurt after the caesarian?
This just seemed like a big budget failure which had a lot of promise but lost the plot quickly.

It made perfect sense and i thought it was executed perfectly.

BTW, the woman was in severe pain and it showed. She could barely walk. But she also had some numbing spray on her so she wouldnt feel it too much.

Good post...but I think he's reading a little too far into it (if that's actually possible with a film like this).

First, I think Ridley was joking a little with the 'Jesus' reference...it doesn't really hold up.
Jesus never told the Romans to stop starting wars and conquering people. He pretty much just tried to reform Judaism - hardly a worthy goal for an alien creator who would presumably be concerned with more than just a tiny desert tribe in a tiny part of a very big world.
You really think they were looking down at all the death and destruction being meted out by Chinese dynasties, Mayan human-sacrifice cults, and the Romans stomping all over European pagans and thought "You know what? The real problem with Earth is that the Jews allow money-changers in their temples?"
    Seems extremely unlikely.
It also doesn't make sense that he would encourage the very small and only group of people in that area who didn't worship the older pagan gods, who of course, were engineers in this scenario. You'd think an engineer, a pagan god himself, would push them back in that direction, not away from it.

Second, the black-slime doesn't react with David because his body doesn't contain H2O or DNA, the two substances we know it reacts with. No further explanation is needed. It turns the worms into monsters well after the humans have left the room, and presumably didn't do so because of their emotions since they don't have any.

Thirdly, if the Engineer is simply angry at humans for wanting to extend their own lives rather than die in the service of others, wouldn't Janek and crew's kamikaze mission lighten him up a bit? Instead it just makes him even more pissed, causing him to go after Shaw rather than take off straight for the next ship.

Now, I actually hope Ridley Scott resists temptation to make a sequel to 'Prometheus' and move onto what happens when Dr Shaw and David find whatever they're looking for and finally answer the mystery of the original 'Space Jockey' who's ship landed on LV-426, carrying the loads of eggs that were then encountered by the crew of the Nostromo in 'Alien'.
Even thought Ridley always said he wanted to pursue that avenue, the 'Space-Jockey' mystery of what Dallas, Kane and Lambert found in the derelict-ship, Im sure someone else will go ahead and make it anyway. :dunno:

He isnt joking. He has mad several references to it. Also, look at the timeline. 2000 years ago. It's Christmas Day, Self Sacrifice.

It turned the worms into Serpant like Monsters. And it happened when the humans entered the room. You can see that David stepped on the little worms and they just little worms. But after, they turned into snakes. The damage was already done. Also, when they finally attacked, two humans were in the room.

    Wouldnt that be a sequel?

Finally watched this film and I have mixed feelings: a critic accurately described it as a big black beautiful mess. It has more plot holes than a swiss cheese. Sure as a scifi fan I just loved the whole enterprise, but the plot was muddy and after raising a lot of questions it ends without giving any answer. To me this was a glorified "Mission To Mars", but less satysfying. I have read all your conjetures, but none of these theories justify the many mistakes in the film. Fassbender was great, his was the only character I cared about in the film. The rest were not fully developed, mere caricatures, scifi stereotypes waiting for their demise. Even the lead actress lacked the Ripley charisma that made us care for her safety. It is an ok movie, but I was expecting more from Ridley Scott. 7/10

First who the heck are these 'Engineers' aliens? The movie doesn't give an answer and whatever the crew and you guys speculate it is just that: speculation. Second the worms mutated from the black substance and thus became giant 'facehuggers-like' creatures who, like in the Alien films eventually 'give birth' to an Alien speciment. That is fine, but the 'engineer' who was supposed to be the 'spacejockey' from the derelict alien spaceship in the first film, just decided to leave its ship and chase Elizabeth Shaw. That is as big mistake as having Greedo shooting first when the whole world knew Han Solo shoot first! I don't buy the hypothesis that this will happen in 'another ship'. that will require another repetition of the same events in Prometheus with the engineer this time staying in its seat while a chestburster kills him from the inside. Third, what the heck with Guy Pearce in makeup as Weyland doing there? wasn't he a young guy in some clips we watched on the internet, but those scenes were cut for whatever reason? were the remaining crew onf the Prometheus trained as kamikase suicidal pilots in case there was an alien threat to earth? Come on! Really? The first engineer killed himself with that black substance and its dna created life on earth. What about the damn lethal black substance? wasn't it supposed to destroy life on earth too at the same time? The movie builds toward a big revelation that never materialized because instead it choose to turn the scientific exploration into another horror house. Wasn't the other guy killed by the black substance also supposed to comeback from the dead as a killer zombie? so at the end Elizabeth Shaw and Dave leave the planet in an alien spacecraft they were not supposed to have a clue how to navigate. Oh, yeah, Dave said he could! Great script writting! As great as the Madagascar animals being in Africa and suddendly saying, "Hey we can go to Monte Carlo, is just around the corner!" and the next scene they are in Europe. The first ALIEN movie had more brains than this prequel. It felt like George Lucas was producing it.

They are exactly that. Engineers. They are the creators of mankind on earth. This is not speculation. We saw them create live on earth in the beginning of the movie.

The works mutated into the serpant like creatures. They didnt mutate into the thing that gave birth to "Alien". Also, it was clearly a different ship in the movie alien. The ship in permetheus was torn apart and the engineer was destroyed. It was a totally different ship. If you saw when they first landed, there about 5 different caves. Each cave had it's own ship. And it was only a piece of the LV. There were probably ships all over the place.

I dont know why these chose guy pearce. Probably begged to be in it.
They self sacrificed. The whole movie was about self sacrifice. Just like the engineer in the beginning. It's a great human quality.
The black substance reacts to human emotion. It was never intended to kill people on earth. The engineers made the black substance for something. We dont know why.

It's there, you just have to see it. Not everyone will turn into a zombie. Again, it reacts differently to different people.

while the crew was sleeping, David was learning to read and speak the engineer's language. It's not inconceivable to think he can learn to fly their air craft.

I haven't read all the replies yet (I will) "HOWEVER" I left the theatre disappointed in the film. I found it tedious and boring in spots.

In fact the most disappointing part....Charlize Theron tells Idris Elba to meet her in her room in 10 minutes and dude is left singing a dumb ass song instead of letting us see what would have been the best part of the film...Charlize naked.

Thumbs down for that blown plot point.

She is naked in so many movies, it's almost a shock when she isnt.
