Any and all fighter between 130-140 lbs...is there any fighter today who would be even be competitive. I'm talking Chavez at 135....I'm even given his opponents 5lbs advantage they can weight at 140 Khan, Rios, JM Marquez...will any fighter today fighters between 130-140 beat Chavez......
No... every one of them that manages to survive more than 4 rounds, has the fight slowly and cruelly beaten out of them, exhausted by the effort of trying to relieve the pressure... just the way Chavez likes it
Chavez would have a chance against today's Pacquiao I guess, who is so much more tepid. But a prime Pacquiao does a number on Chavez. Chavez was an elite Mexican fighter, but still a classic Mexican style fighter, not the type of guy that troubles Pacquiao. If Floyd could still make 140, he'd beat Chavez too.
I'm talking about a 135 pound Chavez....that version applies too much pressure for Pacquiao to deal with....and probably the same thing for Mayweather.
Yeah right :atu: Pacquiao absolutely thrives on pressure, he'd do a total number on Chavez, and Mayweather would just outbox him.
Yeah if you are slow or/and come in as a retard(hands down/winging looping shots).....that has never been Chavez he will find his way in and stay there.
No he wouldn't. Pacquiao is simply a much better fighter, and much, much faster, and more powerful. He'd beat the fuck out of Chavez at any weight. Chavez would get torn to pieces trying to get inside as Pacquiao zipped around hitting him over and over again with punches he didn't see. And Mayweather again is just a better all round fighter, it's not like Chavez would have a size or strength advantage either. Mayweather would control Chavez with his jab, defense, counter punching, footwork, and when Chavez did get inside, Floyd would handle himself fine. Chavez doesn't have the footspeed of someone like Duran to force either Pacquiao or Floyd to fight his fight, they'd both bust him up. Let's not glorify Chavez and pretend he's something that he isn't, he's not one of the best fighters ever, and both Pacquiao and Floyd arguably are. The general standard of boxing right now is depressingly low, and therefore Chavez probably WOULD beat everyone else today at 135/140, but Pacquiao and Floyd are the exceptions, they're both much better fighters than Chavez.
135 lbs makes no difference, Pac and Floyd of those weights both destroy him. Chavez was a good fighter, but overrated.
At least someone around here sees sense :bears: Never understand the Chavez hype at all to be honest, he gets talked about in the same breath as the likes of Duran and Leonard, but the truth is he's not even close to being that good, nor is he anywhere near as good as Pacquiao or Floyd. I don't even dislike him or his style like I do Tszyu for example, but he's just so overrated.
He WAS a very good fighter, but imo he's hyped to the extent he is mostly because he was a Mexican fighter. I've seen people say he'd beat Duran at 135, which is ridiculous.. I don't think he'd even beat Ken Buchanan at 135.
So many things WRONG with the above....it's difficult to digest. But I admire your dedication.... Similar to anything Kostya Tszyu your opinion on Chavez sr. has to be ignore....when you say that Juan Manuel Marquez would take Chavez apart and win easily...your opinion cannot be taken seriously....artie: And the one that really stands out.... "Let's not glorify Chavez and pretend he's something that he isn't, he's not one of the best fighters ever." YES HE FUCKING IS.....
some of you seem to have forgotten how great this guy was... Chavez was one of the most consistent, dominant fighters ever really
He beats the holy shit out of JMM at 130, 135 or 140... I have no doubt in my mind JMM's reputation is grotesquely inflated off of having Pac's number a bit
Dominant? He ducked Pea at 135-140, lost to him badly at 147 and got an egregious draw, got a gift against Laporte, and lost to Meldrick Taylor. You can argue he was a bit past it when he lost to Randall, I'll give you that. The guy was a good fighter, a very good one.. but shy of great.
Agreed. And dominant? Who did he beat exactly? The Rosario win is impressive but what else is there? He's never beaten anyone even approaching the level of the Fab 4. He fought scrubs for half his career and lost to the best guys he fought, including gifts over LaPorte and Taylor, and got schooled by Whitaker. He was a very good fighter, solid, classic pressure fighter, but people talk about him as some sort of unbeatable beast and that's not even close to being true. I would pick a prime-ish Marquez to beat him at 130.
There's nothing wrong with what I said, and I'm afraid you can't be taken seriously, you have a history of rating horrendously overrated fighters like Tito. Chavez is firmly in that camp, just a bit better.
:nono: I definitely overate Tito against their contemporary fighters. Since I thought he would walk over Hopkins with little trouble. But when it comes to Tito vs. Other top Welterweights ever like SRR, Leonard, Hearns, etc...I usually go against Trinidad. But if you have a mythical matchup of Pacquiao or Mayweather vs. Trinidad at 147, then I'm going with Trinidad, because neither one has done SHIT at Welter. If anything history tells us that Roach will keep Pacquiao away from anyone lethal at 147, and Mayweather would just straight up avoid discussing a fight with any of them.
Come on, man. Mayweather and Pac would both embarrass Trinidad, it wouldn't even be competitive. Trinidad's size advantage would mean fuck all in those fights.
As different as Pac and Floyd are stylistically, Tito is basically made to order for both of them. Pacquiao laps up bigger, slower guys, with slow motion footwork, and Floyd will outbox a patient puncher with no real skill all day. Patient guys do badly against Floyd, just get picked off and potshotted. If basic old Winky could 12-0 Tito, one can only imagine what Floyd would do. I doubt Tito would win a round against either of them.
I'm not so sure about that. I think the "newer" Pacquiao does better against Chavez. I guess i depends on what you mean by prime. If we're talking the Pacquiao who beat Barerra and lost to Morales i'll take Manny. Pacman couldn't fight very well going backwards at that point and Chavez would be punching and pushing him back 3 minutes of every round. In the last 4-5 years or so Manny kept his speed and power but improved his footwork and counter punching a lot. I think that Manny decisions Julio. It's still an awesome fight though.
He beat LaPorte close but clear... I always here this talk, but no one has ever produced an honest scorecard where they have Juan LaPorte winning that fight. He stopped Meldrick Taylor in the 12th, he didn't lose the fight, unless you are aware of some alternate universe where Meldrick Taylor got a decision He did not duck Whitaker any more than Whitaker ducked him. I am the biggest Whitaker fan here and even I wouldn't make up shit like that. Next thing, you will pull out the Lockridge fight... seriously an 8-4 fight, really
If you applied half of the obscenely slanted scrutiny to Marquez's resume that you do to Chavez's, you'd have him ranked near Bobo Olson all-time
To be honest, I always thought Chavez was a bit overrated during his heyday...but I really don't get how anyone would think he was less than great.
word. Tremendous fighter to watch. If I had ever became a fighter I would have liked to have emulated his style.
