I heard that he broke it in the dressing room, and then again while talking smack at the staredown. Pretty good effort all things considered
Just watched the fight, while trying to avoid all the talk about it before I did. Looks like he may have sustained some sort of damage to his jaw in the 7th round. When he whispered to his trainer and it looked like they tried to apply an ice pack to the left side of his face. That side actually did look swollen for at least a couple rounds prior to the 9th. May have more severely broken the other side in the 9th when he was unable to keep his mouth closed. Don't know if it was broken or not earlier but it's not exactly out of the realm of possibility it had been damaged for several rounds. Lopez couldn't miss him with the uppercut. Must have swiveled his head a couple dozen times at least, before the 9th round. Don't know if it was mentioned yet either, but for all the talk of Ortiz supposedly being a dirty fighter by the announcers during the fight...........Lopez seemed to have free reign to do what he wanted. Clinching, holding, wrestling and swinging his head around like a fuckin' Giraffe during mating season. Not to say it wasn't a smart play by him. Ortiz never handles it well when the other guy tries to rough him up. I don't think Ortiz is a dirty fighter by nature..............but he doesn't know how to react when the other guy has a less then traditional style.
That was my theory as well, that he broke it - or at least the initial damage was done - in round 7, because that was when he and Danny Garcia whispered back and forth in the corner. It's also in line with Garcia's claim that they wanted to stop the fight 1-2 rounds earlier. You make a good point on Ortiz vis-a-vis being a poor reactionary fighter as opposed to being a dirty fighter.
I dont know if i believe garcia wanted to stop it. I saw ortiz arguing with garcia in the corner and Ortiz himself had to stop the fight. Garcia didnt do it. Ortiz had to stand up and tell them to stop it. Also Ortiz said that his corner wanted him to continue, but he couldnt.
Garcia's trying to minimize the PR damage from Ortiz quitting again. Possibly under direction from Golden Boy
At this point I don't care if the stories match or not. The guys chin was obviously hanging off his face and Lopez couldn't miss hitting it if he tried. Ortiz squares up too much to ever be able to avoid any counter-punches. Jim Grey interviews a guy with a smashed up mouth and is probably concussed a bit at the end of the fight.........and we're worrying about whether the stories jive up or not...........who gives a shit. :dunno: Golden Boy is slime, but it was a fun fight while it lasted..........and I can't really ask any more of Ortiz then that.
:: Nah, his fights are fun but he's a head case. I thought he got what he deserved in the Mayweather fight..........and I'm no Floyd groupie. I thought it was funny when he hit Lopez in the back of the head and when they resumed action the referee yelled at him........."Don't even touch his gloves or any of that shit, Victor". Ref was bullying Victor the whole fight. He just has that brown-nose personality that makes you want to pick on him.
:: :bears: I don't think I picked up on that at the time, I was probably too busy posting here. Hilarious, G probably didn't deem it necessary to buy a ref for a "scrub" like Lopez. Poor wittle Victor got bullied.
I liked when ortiz said that lopez is where he was 2 years ago. And he wasnt going to let Lopez take anything away from him. Where the fuck was Ortiz 2 years ago? and where is he now? This ortiz thinks he is some kind of superstar.
He fits that description better than Ortiz. The dude walked through fire to win that fight so I say yes.
The way he swings his freakishly long neck around, I'd call him a "Young, se-xually charged Giraffe". Here's hoping it catches on. ray:
lopez should take a tune up and then get his career validating payday in mayweather jr.'s comeback bout in november/december.
