Controversy in Poland: who will fight Roy Jones Jr? By Przemek Garczarczyk from Warszawa (Poland) Video: Ringpolska.pl “I don’t care who they will put in front of me – I’m a professional fighter, this is what I do – I fight to win,†said four-division world champion legendary Roy Jones Jr (55-8, 40 KOs) during the final press conference in Warsaw before fighting…and this is the question – who? Jones Jr. supposed to fight #4 ranked by WBC light heavyweight David Kostecki (39-1, 28 KOs) this Saturday, but Kostecki has been arrested and instead preparing for the fight of his life, he watched Jones’ press conference from a prison cell. His promoters are still hoping that Kostecki (who was supposed to go jail next month – but certainly not before the June 30 day of the fight) will be granted a temporary release by Polish authorities and he will be in the ring on June 30. If not, Roy will fight undefeated #8 WBC ranked light heavyweight Pawel Glazewski (17-0, 4 KOs), who vows to do everything he can to win the biggest fight of his carrer. The PPV event in Lodz is getting a lot of press and almost spurs a national debate about the timing of Kostecki’s imprisonment. The card billed as “the most controversial boxing match in Poland,†will also have two more well known US names: four-time heavyweight challenger Jameel McCline (41-11, 24 KOs), who will test the very highly rated new talent on the heavyweight scene, 22-year old southpaw Artur Szpilka (11-0, 9 KOs), and former world champion Nate Campbell (35-9, 26 KOs), who will challenge Poland’s Krzysztof Szot (16-2, 5 KOs).
I really hope Roy wins . He really turned into a pretty nice guy late in his career and I hope he can relive some glory. The guy he is fighting I never even heard of and seems to have no power so it looks like it's a very winnable fight for Roy. Let's hope he wins. But the biggest problem with him winning is that it will only keep him fighting and thus creating a chance to get hurt. So in essence the best case scenario would be Roy getting robbed because that just might turn him off from boxing for good and retire. But I still want him to win and retire but I doubt that is going to happen.

You think Roy's trying to weasel in on McCline's payday? Roy wants a staredown so badly, he's stealing other fighters staredowns. :nono:
So why was Roy's opponent thrown in jail? .........and please don't say "Pre-meditated Homicide".............this is Poland, not "Minority Report".
The funny part is once Roy finally did get KO'd, I felt really bad for him. It wasn't the joy I was expecting.
Exactly the same for me. I've always been a Roy appreciater, but I would root for him to lose because he was annoying in his prime and so were his fans. But damn, the Tarver and Johnson KO's were kind of horrible, you couldn't help but feel bad for him.
especially the Johnson one... I was playing a gig that night and when I got home, a buddy of mine had left a message on my answering machine saying basically "man, I think Jones almost got killed tonight. Scary KO. He had absolutely nothing. No reflexes, no snap. He just got worked over and brutally stopped. He's going to die if he keeps fighting" How many times has he been rendered unconscious since then?
JESUS, I can't believe those were 8 years ago :jaw: They don't seem recent, but somehow they don't seem almost a decade ago.
We'd probably be saying what most of his groupies were saying back then, that he was borderline invincible. I thought the Ruiz win was a great one too, I thought Ruiz was simply too big for Roy.
Prime Roy was about as close to invincible as a fighter gets. I picked Ruiz over him too.. he should've either told Tarver to come up to heavy or retired after that win.
Why? Roy wasn't a heavy and neither was Tarver. Would've just been more of the typical manipulation by Roy. I wish we could all admit that Roy was the benefit of several "adjustments" in reffing techniques that other Heavyweights weren't afforded when THEY fought the clutch-humping beast known as John Ruiz. Roy knew exactly what he was doing when he took the Ruiz fight. It was no tremendous act of valor on his part. It was calculating Roy being calculating Roy. :shit:
in retrospect, it was pretty dangerous for Roy to take that fight. Ruiz certainly hits harder than Tarver or Johnson. That could have been the fight that ended Roy.
It's really sad when you think about it . Roy Jones Jr in his prime was like Michael Jordan of boxing (Tommy Morrison was the Magic Johnson of boxing but that's another story) and who would have thought that this guy who seemed invincible killing everyone, playing basketball games before his fights and even doing commentary for HBO who would have thought that somebody as big in boxing as they were would be fighting at 43 years old in Australia, Russia, Poland etc...and more often then not getting knocked the fuck out (After saying for years he never wants to end up like the dog killer guy)
In retrospect, John Ruiz never threw anything more then a 1-2 and a reach in for the clutch-hump. Even Roy on his worst day knew he could avoid that and counter without suffering much damage in return.
